The lead was immaculate but anyone love that amazingly (idk if this is the word) dissonant note the bass sang towards the end on "Notre" then sliding into the "dame" was just wonderful
@deathbower
@deathbower 3 года назад
The term is a passing note. They're in A which uses A, C# and E for the major triad. The bass sings the passing note E# (and I hope you appreciate this pianist's restraint in calling it an E#) for No- before returning to the triad on -tre.
@davem.3519
@davem.3519 3 года назад
@@deathbower The bass pitch on "No-" isn't at all a passing tone - to be a chromatic passing tone it would have to be preceded by F#. I would argue that's it's not a nonharmonic tone at all, that it's actually part of the harmony... and should be written as F natural, not E#. Starting from the last chord of the third to last measure, you have G⁷ (could call it a G⁹ if you include the high pedal A). G⁷ resolving directly to A major would be quite odd, and a rather unsatisfying resolution. Moving from G⁷ to E⁷ (the V⁷ chord in the key of A) would be a change of only two notes, moving in opposing half steps (G - G#, F - E), a nontraditional but very pleasing resolution. Here the penultimate chord isn't E⁷, it's E(sus4), but it's functionally the same and provides a similar sense of resolution both coming from G⁷ and moving to A. Instead of the G⁷ resolving directly to E(sus4), however, there is an added predominant with that bass note on "No-." It creates a really interesting chord: F - E - A - B. Note its striking similarity to the French Augmented Sixth chord in the key of A: F - D# - A - B. The harmony on "No-" is a chromatically altered Fr⁶. Thus, the final three chords are [functionally] Fr⁶ - V - I. Sorry for my lengthy and probably overanalyzed explanation, but I'm about to graduate with a degree in composition, so I'm kinda obsessed with diving deep into music theory. I also feel like it's kind of appropriate on a channel that features Jacob Collier, the man with probably some of the wildest music theory of all time haha *EDIT: upon a bit further reflection, it could be seen as a passing tone (again, transcribed as F not E#), going G - F - E, but the rest in between makes it too disjointed for me to hear that as a passing tone. (I would have noticed that possibility earlier if it were actually transcribed as a major 2nd instead of a diminished 3rd)
@deathbower
@deathbower 3 года назад
@@davem.3519 Don't apologise, that was fascinating. What I would ask you, however: In barbershop, especially with their seventh chords, they use just intonation to make the harmonics sing. With that context, is it really okay to view E# and F as the same note?
@davem.3519
@davem.3519 3 года назад
@@deathbower When you abandon equal temperament in singing, you don't have to then maintain any particular temperament system - you can simply adjust any note up or down slightly based on its context. And there absolutely can be context that would suggest E# and F to be different pitches: if there was an E# moving to F (or vice versa). But when singing with pure intervals, even two F's don't need to be the same. Good observation, thanks for pointing that out! 👍

@alexanderbayramov2626 3 года назад
Right? I got goosebumps there I think that dissonant chord represents some impressions of medieval harmonic style , or probably even earlier one, suddenly music feels very 'religious' and quite impactful, and of course this cadence is very special and different from simple Picardy third, which is really cool (The way three top voices hold e+b+a chord is already magical, but that F in bass is just crazy)

Ringmasters are an amazing barbershop group, what the lead (Jakob Stenberg) is doing is called a hanger/post which is usually used at the end of barbershop arrangements which is called the tag Edit: Something also, Jakob held another hanger a couple bars back at the false tag(which was the first chord at the start of this video), and to be able to do another one in such short time is astonishing.
