‘Watchmaker’ is a very loose term. Someone who dismantles, services and reassembles watches can be titled as such. Someone who takes a machine-made blank and hand finishes it-they too can be called a watchmaker. But someone who actually makes watches, with their hands, from the drawing board to the finished result, that’s surely the ultimate watchmaker. This is the kind of watchmaker George Daniels was.

You can't teach that kind of technical aptitude and intuition. As a degreed engr, I greatly admire figures such as the the Wright Brothers, John Browning, and George Daniels, who had no formal engr training, yet achieved so much beyond the abilities of ordinary men.

Love the idea that Daniels could design each watch, make the tools to make the parts of his watch, make the parts of the watch, assemble it and refine it without any outside help or automation. The whole process and history of horology was internalised in one man.

George Daniels was the greatest watchmaker of the 20th century and the only modern watchmaker who's watch is featured in the prestigious Horology section of the British museum. Words can't do the genius of this man justice.

Another perfect video on one of the greatest watchmakers that ever lived, maybe do one on Roger Smith as well. And if I may suggest a mini series called "Longitude" about John Harrison, another great name in timing devices, although a clock maker is a more correct name for him. A series I am sure every watch lover will enjoy 😊

The external shots are George Daniels watches of course, but the internal escapement shots from 3mins 13seconds forward are of a development of Daniels' co-axial escapement, a single wheel version by Roger Smith (his lightweight version).

Mind boggling precision, intricacy, creativity and ingenuity... I even get excited if I make my own playing card box, so viewing raw watchmaking from scratch is like engineering utopia for me. People like this are national (global even) treasures, their skills and knowledge need to be mined, archived, sustained and propagated. Their tradition and technological legacy needs to continue after they pass away.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have always believe George Daniels doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Actually I have come up some salespeople at Omega boutiques stores who don't even know who he was. Something I have a hard time processing but that ultimately it has to be Omega's fault since it seems evident it's deficiency in training. I bet one day most mechanical watches will feature a Daniels Co-Axial escapement.

I think the achievements performed by George Daniels are truly exceptional, but I'm not sure about the co-axial movement being the best thing in centuries since it's owned by Omega. I have a Speedmaster DSotM myself and the variance is barely noticeable, but certainly not significantly better (or worse) than other watches in this segment. So it can be argued that co-axial movement as it's used today by Omega is more of a marketing ploy than a technical achievement.

Great video. How on earth did you get hold of 2 of Daniel’s watches?! Seriously impressive. Shame on Patek! I would consider Daniels to be not just Britain’s best watchmaker but probably the most significant watchmaker of the 20th century. I just can’t help feel that Patek felt threatened by Daniels. What he achieved on his own, in his workshop, by not only building every part by hand and from scratch (apart from the balance spring I believe) but also innovating, designing and producing a new and improved escapement, is nothing short of incredible. I don’t believe even Switzerland’s Philippe Dufour has done this. It is wonderful that Roger Smith is continuing this legacy.
