Oregon State comes from the PAC 12. The PAC 12 has the most CWS championships than ALL other conferences combined. Also, the PAC 12 has just as good of a winning percentage in the tournament than any other conference, including the SEC. Grant it the SEC has been very good as of late winning the most championships in the last 20 years - don’t disrespect the PAC. Look it up in Wikipedia if you need to. Also, I would bet things would be different recently if the NCAA wasn’t biased towards the SEC and ACC getting 75% of their teams placed into the tournament, whereas the PAC is lucky to get 50% of their teams in the tournament. Good for the SEC and ACC but screws the rest of the country. Great fan bases out there in the South, and wish you all the best!
I was in Vegas watching that game and it was incredible. I have to agree the best pitching performance ever in CWS with all that was on the line. Go Beavs. Best baseball program in the nation
@TheSportsGuru so I'm assuming somebody named Kendall boone said something stupid in the comments, and everybody jumped on him so he deleted all his remarks?
I absolutely love the 3-2 punch out. Batter needs to be swinging at that. Too close to call, and the umpire was calling a big lower half of the zone all game anyway. TWO STRIKE APPROACH! Gotta PROTECT!
As an Oregon State fan, it was particularly sweet to avenge the 2017 CWS losses to LSU by beating the Tigers 26-1 in two games in the regional on the way to the title :)
@@palmquac This should have been an opportunity to express mutual hate toward Arkansas. You didn't have to bring that up. I expected better from your Andy.
@@TaurineDippy Haha, sorry. Fair enough. I really, really, REALLY enjoyed beating all the Hogs when they outnumbered OSU orange and black 4 to 1 in the stadium in Omaha. It was so sweet!
This just shows that a good change up is possibly the second greatest pitch possible. Behind a good fastball of course, you can’t throw a change up as a main pitch.
Yeah, that last pitch looked like a ball to me, but if the ump has a big lower half of the zone (like other people in the comments are saying he did), then you gotta swing. However, I will say something in the hitters defense. At that moment he’d sat down 19 in a row, it’s the bottom of the 9th, you’re down by 5, it’s the CWS, I can understand why he took it. A lot of times when a pitcher is that locked in, and nobody can even buy a hit. A walk can be your best friend. It just breaks the streak, and then you just have to hope the next 5 guys can get hits 😂. Def an all-time great pitching performance for sure. That change-up……just woah. Extremely impressive! 🇺🇸🇺🇦
Have to remember abel pitched close to 300 pitches with a 0.86 era and is the only pitcher to have won 4 games in Omaha in a single tournament. Complete dominance never before seen from a pitcher in Omaha let alone a true freshman
I remember watching this live on ESPN. It's also the game where Trevor Larnach hits that game tying double in bottom of the 9th with 2 outs to send the game to extra innings. Which they eventually won btw...
No, Grenier hit a game tying single with two outs in the bottom of the 9th. Larnach followed that with a two-run homer to put the Beavs ahead.....and the pitching staff shut down Arkansas' sorry pigs to finish it. The game did NOT go extra innings.
Greater tied the game after 3 Arkansas players converged on a fly ball in foul territory in short right field that fell in between all 3 guys which would have been the final out. Grenier then delivered the hit to tie the game followed by Trevor Larnachs 2 run homer. And then Mulholland turned a great double play to end it. Awesome game
If this is the future of pitching in baseball sign me up, we need more contact in MLB which produces for fielding and therefore more excitement. Stop juicing the ball and let the professors like this guy, Greinke, Hendricks ect make the game fun again.
Just to clear it's OREGON STATE !! "Oregon" is arch rival...never won national championship in anything... vs Beavers 3 CWS baseball national titles !!
@@larryherdener2321 I am NOT an Oregon (GO BEAVS!) but they've won several track and field championships. Several 2nd places too. Don't dismiss T&F. The speed sometimes crosses over to football. The Oregon women are all over the championships and 2nd places as well.
Abel: 21 IP, 23 strikeouts, 0.86 era, only pitcher to win 4 games in a CWS, first pitcher to win 2 games in a finals. There is no cumulative CWS pitching performance better than his…ever…end of discussion
Oh oh. Is this the one where that cocky Arkansas Ofer drops the championship winning pop up? Greatest play in college history. Humble pie incoming in 5.4.3…
Poor guy I wouldn't have let him do it if I was as head coach. As much fun as it is in the moment it sucks having to sit out a year to get your elbow replaced
yep he was a badass that year but was never the same after...he was over used. Ended up having Tommy John surgery two years ago and hasn't been heard from since.
No, that was Luke heimlich. He didn’t “get into trouble”. He had been in trouble as a juvenile which was supposed to be sealed. Pat Casey later found out and he was removed from Play for the 2017 CWS. Casey could’ve easily thrown him under the bus but stood by him. It’s probably the reason that 2018 was Casey’s final year.
Kevin Abel complete game shutout as a true freshman. Cumulative: 21 IP, 23 strikeouts, 0.86 era. Onlympitcher to win 4 games in a single CWS onlympitcher to win two finals games. Those guys had a stellar game though
Best performance of all time? Maybe. Definitely top 3, but I just saw Will Bednar of MS State strike out 16 vs Vandy and then came back on 3 days rest and no-hit Vandy through 6 innings to win the Natty. Thats legendary.
You SEC fans and your tunnel vision. Bednar 18 1/3 innings with a 1.46 era which is an amazing performance in the college World Series. Kevin Abel 21 innings pitched, 23 strikeouts, 0.86 era, only pitcher to have won 4 games in Omaha. First pitcher to win 2 games in the final series. True freshman.
And Arkansas was one out away in the 9th in game 2, a simple pop fly at 1st base would have won them the series.... 3 Arkansas players watched it drop and Beavers never looked back!
Don't feel that bad, Oregon St. beat North Carolina 2 years in a row for the CWS title, 2006 and 2007. I don't think the Tar heels will ever get over those back-to-back losses. OSU's Pat Riley was one of the best college baseball coaches in the country.
@@marvinthiessen3454 our circumstances are different since UNC has a huge winning tradition, while Arkansas only has our hockey baseball football soccer and basketball, one March madness win and one national championship.
@@iamkonner4813 OSU doesn't have the warm climate that the California and Arizona schools have yet Oregon St. attracts top high school prospects because of the former head coach, Pat Riley. He's put several players in the pros. OSU is still winning but not as well since Riley retired. UO has the football and basketball teams.
@@marvinthiessen3454 I play baseball for Bishop Gorman here in Vegas. I know a couple kids that decomitted from OSU because Pat Riley left. You're right, he had such a big impact on recruiting.
@@combatcentral7386 Thanks. When Riley announced his retirement, that was the beginning of the end for OSU baseball. I doubt they'll win another CWS tittle. Oregon St. also lost Nate Yeskie, their ace pitching coach.
He wasn't eligible for the draft until last year.....the year he was coming off of TJ surgery and the draft was shortened due to COVID. No team was going to take a chance on any pitcher at that stage of TJ recovery, especially for a high round draft choice. If he stays healthy, he'll go in the first 3 rounds after this season.
The performance(s) by Will Bednar (Mississippi State) are 2nd to none in the 2021 World Series. The last one, the championship game was one for the ages.
He pitched 18 1/3 for a 1.46 era. That’s damn good. Meanwhile Abel was DAM good at 21 innings pitched, 23 strikeout 0.86 era and the only pitcher in CWS history to win 4 games. Oh, he was also a true freshman. Keep the SEC sunglasses on though!
@@321peyton8 you are right. that was the best. No sec glasses here. let us just hope LSU becomes the next texas a/m of football $$$ in baseball. they are all in on buying another natty in baseball
Yeah the fucking idiot Shatty called off the first baseman on a foul ball (which the first baseman was under the ball) and then proceeds to miss it. Would’ve made the final out and end of the CWS.
Abel, 21 IP, 23 strikeouts, 0.86 era, only pitcher to win 4 games in a single college World Series, only pitcher to win two games in a finals, True freshman. You SEC folks 😄
Was this the year that idiot Shatty gave OSU the CWS by calling off the first baseman on a foul ball? Which would’ve been the third out for an Arkansas win.
Sorry, but Brett Laxton struck out 16 (still a record) for LSU to shutout Wichita State in the 1993 championship game. That would be the greatest pitching performance in the CWS.
They’re talking about the whole series. He’s the only pitcher to win 2 games in the finals. Only pitcher to win 4 games in Omaha. Pitched 21 innings in Omaha, striking out 23, 0.86 era. True freshman
Dumb af to send him back out there to throw 120 pitches up 5-0 in the ninth after pitching the night before. This is why some college coaches have reputations of blowing out arms. And what would you know...
@@ohiostate1629 I knew more about every aspect of this game by the time I was 13 than you will in your entire life. The kid saying he’s fine means absolutely nothing.
Yeah, single game performance that was amazing. For the entire college world series tournament there’s no arguing Abel 21 IP, 23 Ks, 0.86 ERA, only pitcher to win 4 games. First pitcher to win 2 games in the finals. True freshman
Listening on the radio then watching on television...it took me a very quick moment to recognize the world caliber pitching performance was or rather is, perhaps the greatest NCAA Men’s pitching performance ever ! GO 🦫 🦫🦫🦫🦫🦫🦫🦫’s
