This took a long time to get just right. This woodworking drill press table uses a split fence system that can be used all the way at the max capacity of your drill press, or be pushed back even farther and stored completely out of the way.

It's a recursive problem. You always need more clamps, for which you then need more storage for the clamps, rinse & repeat....

Thanks - it's a very good design. I have a suggestion for making the larger fence. Instead of routing the 2" deep slot in multiple passes, one could make a sandwich of two long faces ( 2 x 16 x 5/8") and two spacers (2 x 1.5 x 5/16) at the ends. Then the T-slot could be milled in the face surface. Other than that, provision of a sacrificial backer insert would be nice.

Although my radial drill press is slightly smaller, years back I built a nearly identical table for it for many of the reasons in your video. I have 4 T-tracks, and paired with a 36"long piece of multi-track 3" tall. It mounts with 90-degree brackets in the back so the knobs are behind the fence instead of on top. That gives me slots on 3 sides at various heights and I can flop it onto the 3" face for a low fence when needed. Having 2 tracks on each side of the table is THE KEY and means I can hang 36" of fence off one side or the other and then I have a supplemental fence, like your low fence, that I can use from my table saw sled in a pinch. I mostly use hold down clamps and blocks for stops and tried to keep my entire system on 1/4"-20 bolts in either hex or slot heads. Not sure what's next for your shop but I added a long hand crank off the side due to the increased table size. Just a bunch of ratchet extensions and a universal joint but it's easier than stooping underneath. Zero regrets after many years of use.

I like this. After reading all the previous comments I would make a couple of changes. Instead of routing the through slot in the fences fabricate them from several pieces to make the slot. Incorporate a sacrificial section under the drill bit. Eliminate the T track in favor of the dovetail slots. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe. 😀😀

I LOVE this table, and I can see myself making something similar. I currently have two fences, with the second fence being shorter to clear the quill handles, but there are times when I have removed one of the three handles. So a split fence with long slots makes so much sense, and I love the idea of extra clearance. My background is actually as a toolmaker who has discovered the joy of working with wood, so I can make those long slots with a milling machine. I can also adapt clamps to fit t-slots as that is so much better than clamping behind the fence. I a big fan of using the distance from spindle axis to fence as a guide for accurate inline hole drilling, and watching this video has given me the idea of designing a digital depth gauge that fits in the chuck and sweeps the fence, although I can see a couple of issues with that like the contact with the fence will have to be precisely inline with the spindle axis. At the moment I have a tapered rod that lives on a magnet on the drill, and I put in the chuck, but my eyesight is not great and I struggle to see the ruler markings. I think I have all the parts to make a similar table, and I am feeling properly psyched up to do so.

Good idea. I built my router table fence the same way (with split fences). Great for when you are routing the entire edge and need to support the outfeed "new" edge. I'm like you I have never seen split fences on other tables whether they were drill press or router. Not a fan of the realigning exercise to ensure parrallel/in line fences but worth the effort when you need the flexibility.

I will probably add an interchangeable sacrificial piece under the chuck and some form of tilt in Y coordinate direction as my drill press table base has a tilt in X coordinate direction. How did you solve the under the table adjustments, like the lowering and raising handle and the table locking mechanism? I would love a large table surface like this, but the crank handle on the height mechanism hits the bottom of the table. Boy that was wordy, but I hope you get what I am saying. Again, another clear and concise video explaining how and why you do things in a certain way 👍 .... That drill is HUGE 😯 A few suggestions ... 1) Instead of routing such a long slot in the fence, just use two bits of wood and glue a little block between them at each end ... far simpler and easier to make and uses less wood as well! 2) Instead of a t-slot or dovetail slot for clamps ... you could just put a clamp around the work piece and onto the back of the fence ... I realise that may not always be possible, but the same goes for the slots!

Very nice design. An easy way to make the taller fence is to glue a 1/4-inch wide piece of wood that acts as a spacer between the 2-inch-tall boards on each end and no routing is needed. I look forward to making your new fence to replace my old one.

I like the split fence idea. My updated table is similar with a 1 piece fence but after seeing yours I may change it. The T-track stops in my fence always seem to stick up and get in the way and half the time I just use clamps. I made a few stop blocks by gluing 60-80 grit sanding belt to smaller rectangles and those really bite and hold with minimal pressure under the T-track clamps or on the fence. I’m thinking of changing the threaded knob for T-track fence position into a thumb-wheel concealed inside the fence (it may not work but….) if it does it will be completely out of the way.

Thanks for sharing your ideas on an important topic. Your video is well organized and thought provoking. It inspired me to consider the advantages of of half fences for drilling operations. Like using the right, smaller fence as a stop. Perhaps if could have a protruding finger or grove to additionally support the material. You're obviously a helpful reference source and I'd like to see more.

I have a suggestion for the Matchfit Dovetail Clamps. Take a file and file a bit on both sides of the clamp just under the flare. Then, not only will they also fit in your application but you can also use them in Festool or Makita tracksaw tracks.

9:57 - I had the same issue with my DP table fence. My solution for too-wide top knobs will be to mill the top T-slot towards the back of the fence, rather than in the center...next time! I really like this design, as my DP handles are often hitting my fence. Nice build! Looking forward to the dust collection addendum.

Interesting design. I've been thinking about re-doing my table and this has some features that I've been thinking about how to achieve. Dual height fence jumps right out. But what about allowing for drill through on your work piece? This top looks too nice to want it full of holes right in the middle. Not to mention that then you've got no support for future smaller holes. Asking for blow out there. Do you just continually use a piece of scrap under the work piece? That seems too fussy and fiddly. I'm not complaining about your design. This is an actual question. How do you avoid through holes and blowout?

For a groove the majority of the length of your fence, it would be easier to use two thinner pieces and just glue (e.g. 1"x 3/8" wood scrap) spacers on each end. Great job. I love my drill press table as is, but I might make a new fence that I can optionally use. I will have to install two more t-tracks though so that each half can be securely fastened for a two-piece fence like this. Keep up the great work pal.

I don't see an obvious way set up a long run of consistent holes, like holes every 2 inches across a 4 foot piece, for example. Maybe another T track running with the chuck you could put a bolt or something to reference each hole to drill the next one.

I love the way you walk us through the design and the whys and wheres of it. There were 3 things I wasn't sure about. How hard is it to make the two fences straight with each other in order to make line drill holes that would be the same depth at different parts of a board? Didn't look like there was a center removable piece of wood when the drill holes get too bad in it can be replaced. And how does it attach to your drill press? Thanks, Rick

That is a unique design. I like it. I just got the microjig clamps and was going to put some dovetails in my drill press table for the clamps but I think I might look into your table and fence. It's cool. I made a small table that clamps onto the drill press post and sits below the main table. It's handy to keep small parts while drilling but being an open table it collects a lot of sawdust. Could you show that drawer a bit more on yours?

Best design I have seen, but like all drill press tables, for the work I do, the thing that I could not accept is the way they impede access to the height adjustment wheel and collar tightening screw--I am always moving my table up and down. We need to find a way to bring those controls to the front of the table.

@Gord Cameron For what it's worth, with the five-inch drawer box raising the table up, the adjustment points are actually easier to get to now. I move my table a lot as well and wondered if it would be an issue, but so far so good. I have seen folks bring the controls forward by adding different parts and pieces. Just not a road I wanted to go down right now.

Nice design! While a deep surface sounds like a good idea, I've found the hassle of getting to the height adjustment handle and height lock lever (now located beneath that nice deep surface) to be a lot more cumbersome than to have to occasionally remove the fence when it gets in the way. Yes, there are ways to get a mechanical link to the height adjustment from the front of your table, and get the lock lever extended and accessible from the side, but truth is, I rarely need to work with drilling into deep material that would make these mods worthwhile. In practice, when you need to get drill access into the middle of your piece, that extra depth (i.e. thickness of your fence) isn't really relevant and you're gonna need to drill without the press anyway.

Always love your perspective. Thoughts on a sacrificial board to drill into? I've always struggled with this part of drill press tables as I don't want to need to make new inserts every ___ number of holes.

@Clayton James I just use a scrap piece underneath. It's a good way to use up scraps. I don't really care for inserts because they are too finicky. Say I drill a one-inch hole one time. Now if I drill anything smaller than that I no longer have material support and I have to scoot over and adjust things. It is just quicker and easier for me to grab a scrap board and throw it under there and be done.

I'm researching a drill press table and this is definitely not the run of the mill design. Really like the flexibility. I am wondering, though, what is the purpose of the routed T-track on top of the tall fence? As far as I can tell from your video, all you need is the through slot for clamping the fence to the table.

Do you ever find yourself using the parts of the table that fits around the pillar? I have made a similar table using the dovetail system but limited the table size to sit in front of the pillar so I could use the tilt function of the drill press. I used a more dense grid, basically creating a dovetail mortise grid that allows the clamps to reach the midpoint of each grid, and built stop blocks that are set using the clamps. I will however be using your split fence concept, that is just too cool to not be used. Thank you very much for sharing, it makes us all better woodworkers!

@Dennis Seemann Only to store the fences. In the 20-something years that I've owned that drill press I can't think of a single time that I've needed to tilt the table, except to level it, so I didn't think about that.

@@InspireWoodcraft so I make a lot of tapered-round legs angle-supported furniture that requires accuracy close enough that when the supports/legs come together at the top the seats, tops, etc are level, and the only reasonable way that I can achieve the accuracy I need is with a drill press that has a tilting table. I build all this furniture for my Grandchildren so it has to be able to be adjusted to grow with them and so I make most of my stuff using threaded inserts and even with a jig and hand drill Is very frustrating to get the holes for the inserts to line up accurately enough.

Do you ever use the t-slot on top of the main fence? It seems to me the lock down knobs would be in the way to make it effective. Besides that great design. I've almost finished building mine, thanks for the plans. BTW I've gone with MicroJig dovetail slots all the way. I'll let you know how they work out.

@Tim Murphy I don’t use it currently. The knobs can get in the way, depending on how you use it. I originally had been using it for a vertical hold down. That was until I modified the front track to accept track clamps.
