I saw the Roots in their prime in 1999. Black Thought literally freestyled for 3 hrs with the band just making up tunes on the spot.

I saw him live a few months after this originally dropped, and he did this in person. It's even more impressive live. Ten minutes completely uninterrupted. It's amazing.

I especially love that the beat that they use is Mobb Deep's "The Learning". He brought a lot of learning on this.

Black Thought is my first choice as an emcee. I've seen this at least 30 times. To be honest, he can actually do better than this. He is capable of skillfully topping this. I've met him before and followed him for over 20 years. These are throw away bars.

After we heard this we had to go back to the drawing board and change our top lists because many of us didn't rate him high enough. It's hilarious to me how some people, usually younger people, generally non musicians, find it so hard to fathom that this could possibly be not written. Jazz music is ALL freestyle. An expression of one's inner self and it takes many years to obtain that level. This dude has been doing this FOR OVER 30 YEARS! Why wouldn't he be able to come off the dome? Instead of a guitar, piano, sax, as his instrument, his voice, mind and experience are his chosen instrument of expression. The thing is, none of their favorite rappers can ever think about doing this so they assume it can't be done. But us old heads that's been listening to him for most of our adult lives know better. He could easily do it again without once using not one bar you heard in this freestyle
