At Sydney's Stadium Australia, in front of a world record 110,000 people, the Australian and New Zealand Rugby teams played what many have called "the greatest game of Rugby ever played".
After just eight minutes the All Blacks were leading by an unbelievable 24 to 0. Miraculously, the Wallabies came back and were leading 35 to 34 when, in the dying moments of the game, the great All Black winger Jonah Lomu scored the winning try.

I think Jonah beat Campo many times when they played each other. The 95 Bledisloe Cup game in Sydney, Hong Kong 7's, Super Rugby. All whilst suffering from kidney failure. So Jonah's career was always on a bad day.
@antonposa5345
@antonposa5345 7 лет назад
That is true. But Jonah's strength was not in his stats. It was his aura. He was the first global rugby superstar, and catapulted the All Blacks into the fully professional era we know today. To do that you have to capture people's imaginations. And that's why, in my mind, he will always be the greatest.

George Gregan played his heart out that day. As an All Black supporter. It was awesome to see George Gregan and Tim Horan at Jonahs Memorial service. Much respect to both teams. RIP Jonah Lomu All Black No 941

Gregan tore us apart in the first half - or at least after the first five minutes. But I remember Kronfeld coming on at half time and completely stuffed his game. He spent most of the second half with his hands in the air ar the back of the ruck unable to get the ball.

I was there. It really was the best match of rugby I have ever seen. It was an electric atmosphere in the stadium with a massive crowd not knowing from second to second who was going to win. That was what made it special not the defence or the attack. Every time Jonah got the ball in the second half the crowd went quiet, absolutely quiet, in anticipation of what he might do. A privilege to have seen the game and to have seen Jonah, who in the best game of rugby ever, was the best player.

I remember this game started (for me) at 6am on a Saturday morning on Fox Sports World. I had only been interested in rugby for about a year, but I was able to watch this match live. Being a Wallaby fan, I hated to see NZ win...but the match itself was so fantastic that I ended up watching the replays, recording it, and forcing family to watch it with me. Truly, rugby of the gods.

I had the pleasure of seeing this on TV, but it must have been incredible actually being there. Almost 15 years on and its still one of the most exciting matches ive ever seen. If you'd actually seen the entire match, it wasn't a bad defensive game, it was two equally skilled teams attacking furiously at each other and capitalizing on lapses in each others defense. Besides, a bad defensive game is obviously far more fun to watch than a good defensive game of just penalty kicks and kicking for territory.

sorry to say here mate that AFL NRL and Soccer are all crapping on Rugby now in OZ. Our game is broke and no juniors coming through. Rugby sadly will be a game we were once good at and that we cant compete in any more soon. RWC 19 we will miss the 1/4 Finals in my view and wont make the Top 6 teams in the world again after that. It's sad for Trans Tasman rivalry and Bledisloe and we will never give you top competition or beat NZ again.

I was at this game and yes the feeling was the best I have had. About 10 minutes form halftime the aussies came back and I had to get down the stairs on the northern stand and have a smoke as I thought I was having a heart attack. A little aussie kid had me on when I got back 10 minutes into second half when I had settled down. An amazing game and crowd and the pubs were full of folk marvelling at the game and were better at giving credit where it was due than us Kiwis. Truly the best.

when Australia actually turned up to the game to play
5 лет назад
What's happened in Australia? I mean, in the 80's and 90's they were always producing great teams, won two WCs. The All Blacks got beat plenty by them. Where's the modern day Ella, Campese, Lynagh, Farr-Jones?
@halenball-vant1772
@halenball-vant1772 5 лет назад
@ I'm guessing rugby league kind of took over. It's more popular over here.
5 лет назад
@@halenball-vant1772 Yeah, it's been that way actually since the 1908 Olympic gold winners came home. Wasn't it about fifteen years that rugby union totally disappeared in Queensland, until the late 1920's when it was revivived? Then there's the national sport of Aussie Rules. Too many games to play in Australia, I guess. It's kinda like that in the USA, which is why rugby will never, ever become all that popular here. 7's maybe we can be world champs. 15's? No way!
@zel3888
@zel3888 5 лет назад
@ its actually gone back to the averages ... i mean look at the history of bledisloe cup going back to the 20s - its all NZ, with a wallabies win every blue moon. THe 90s are early 2000s dominance of the wallabies was a complete aberration. Once in 100 year team with eales and gregan etc. Now its reverted to the long term average.
@zel3888
@zel3888 5 лет назад
@ Mate don't know where you're getting your stats from but Australia have won the Bledisloe cup only 12 times since 1932 - and most of those were in the 1994-2003 period. The stats confirm y pesimistic (I'm an Australian/wallabies supporter) - Australian rugby has reverted to the mean. We can maybe expect to win the cup every 10-15 years at most, until another "team of the century" comes along. Source for my stats: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bledisloe_Cup#Results

I have to comment as to the timeliness that RU-vid popped this video up in my Recommended line. I had posted a video of "The Greatest Try of All Time: 1973 All Blacks vs the Baba's". A former teammate of mine (Srumhalf) commented on my post that Sid Goings and Gareth Edwards were the two greatest scrumhalfs. Not disputing, I replied I always loved to see George Gregan and Justin Marshall go head-to-head. Always great games when those two were in there, not discounting the other 28 players on the field. Comments from a 66 yr old Yank that played for 28 yrs for the San Francisco Rugby Club, for what it's worth. Cheers.

Comparing rugby to American football is just stupid. That's like trying to say Usain Bolt wouldn't win a marathon. Of course he wouldn't, they are completely different sports. American football requires padding because it's a much faster and wide-open game. There is a lot of space to generate speed and the players that play the game focus on speed and agility over raw power unless you're on the line. Rugby is a much more contained sport where the two teams are constantly in close quarters. Very rarely to teams generate enough space between each other to even cause a high speed collision. So there's little to no padding needed. It requires brute strength and endurance. Only the best rugby players would be good at American football and only the best football players would be good at rugby. Quit trying to compare the two and enjoy both games for what they are.
@reganheath
@reganheath 10 лет назад
You're definitely right, comparing the two is a bit ridiculous. But I disagree with the point that in Rugby you don't have the space to generate the same speed, I think this is demonstrably false simply by looking at recordings and calculating the speeds at which players are moving. Instead I think the biggest difference is around the rules about when/how you are allowed to tackle players who are moving at speed and more importantly in the air. In rugby you are not allowed to tackle a player in the air because without padding this would be incredibly dangerous. I don't think the NFL has the same rule? Also, the use of pads allows players to hit each other harder and in a more spectacular fashion without an unreasonable risk of injury, serious or otherwise, and this simply makes for a better spectacle.
@xXRazorbacksXx
@xXRazorbacksXx 10 лет назад
You're right, the NFL doesn't have a rule about hitting in the air, but I may have worded my statement incorrectly. In Rugby, the ability to get out in the open to generate that speed is rare, while in football, it's every single play. That's what I meant by that. You're also right about padding giving more freedom with hits. Especially helmets. As a former player, I can say that padding gives you the feeling of invincibility, so players are willing to sacrifice their bodies more for hits. This, obviously, leads to bigger hits and more injuries.
@blizzard0508
@blizzard0508 10 лет назад
I've tried explaining this to rugby fans, but lately I've just given up and started saying the pads in American Football make its hits harder and without them we'd have pussy hits like in Rugby. I love both games, but I'm just tired of people saying Rugby is superior.

blizzard0508 Perhaps the issue is your use of the word "pussy" hmm.. It is clearly incorrect to refer to the hits in Rugby that way, the players are clearly not going easy on each other. The only difference, it seems to me, is that certain types of tackle are illegal in Rugby, for safety reasons, and that these hits are legal in American Football specifically because the pads allow them more safely. That's pretty much it.
@blizzard0508
@blizzard0508 10 лет назад
Regan Heath I've only recently started calling the hits in Rugby pussy-like, because most Rugby fans don't want to listen, and all they see is the pads. I'm just tired of writing drawn out explanations that just get laughed at. Insulting the other sport(Even though I greatly enjoy it) seems like the only way to get the point across anymore.

Pads aren't protection. They make the hits harder and the game more exciting. If American Football didn't use pads, the players would tackle like pussies, I mean like Rugby players.

@@marksheehan8026 ,says who?Some bias american sports science show that used boys to tackle.The tests are flawed because for one,americans done it so theres obvious bias there and two,many rugby players hit a lot harder than others,three,NFL players wear pussy padding which cushions a lot of the hit,four,rugby and league hits look worse to me than NFL hits from what ive seen and even americans reacting to rugby for the first time all say the rugby hits are worse on rugby v NFL reaction videos. Rugbys for real men,NFLs for wimps.

@UHtiger fair point there, all I was trying to get across is that the hits people take in football are harder, doesn't make it a better sport, just means that the players get hit harder

Yep, I was there. It was not just the score - it was a high standard game throughout. With a huge and vocal crowd for atmosphere (plenty of kiwis had come across the ditch for it too - everyone knew it was a showdown between two great teams at their peak). There were lots of near-tries stopped by terrific defence - any mistakes got punished. Though I do think the better team on the night won (and I'm Australian).

Guys, why are u comparing rugby to American football. Coming from an American point of view it just looks pathetic. Although we don't have much of this sport in the US, I loooove football and this game seems pretty interesting. So I've been looking into it more recently. I must say it's pretty different actually but in a unique way. I like it. U know what would be cool, if there was like a show where the mixed sports and like had rugby people tryin to play football or the other way around, or like tennis players trying to play bad mitten. Guys I'm gonna become a millionare after this.😂this comment has been going on too long. I like rugby but not as much as football, but don't get mad it may have been the other way around, I just grew up with football so I kind of am entitled to love it...anyway have an amazing day

Stop calling it football, ok ? football was already a sport long before "your" game was even invented. Also i dont know how anyone can enjoy a sport that runs for 3 hours, yet has only an average of 4-6 minutes of actual game time....that isnt a sport, its just something to watch during commercial breaks.

.An"Open side" (the side with the most space/grass) flanker who wears number 7 on his jersey, has some of the most important jobs in the game: #1 To defensively disrupt the opposition number 10 (i.e the playmaker). #2 To secure turnover ball by staying on his feet contesting at rucks (breakdown plays). #3 To act as a support runner and cover defender in all instances. #4 To assist in Lineouts by either lifting / jumping or securing sloppy lineout or overthrown lineouts.

Firstly, how the hell is this a 'world record', world record for what? there were over 120,000 in attendance at a rugby match in Bradford over 60 years ago. As for being the greatest game of rugby ever played, do me a favour. First try from a basic error by the fullback, the 2nd try coming from a mistake by the touchie not given Lomu in touch, sloppy sloppy Australian defence for the third, basically error strewn defences with a couple of neat touches/interplay and some good finishing. There is NOTHING sensational about the play in this game of rugby whatsoever, very good I'll give you, exciting for sure, greatest ever rugby game...not by a mile.

+ynotnilknarf39 You're probably a deluded England supporter. Yes, in 2003 they were undoubtedly the best team in the world but the kicking style of play that came into the game soon after that has made the sport as boring as it is today. All the players are equally sized both forwards and backs and it's mostly about which team can kick more penalties - thanks to Johnny Wilkinson. This game represents entertainment in the game. Fluid style back play that is brilliant to watch. I was at this game and I can tell you the atmosphere at 110,000 was unmatched to any game at held Twickenham or in a shitty Bradford stadium.

KernalRegis YAAAAAWN, firstly where I'm from is irrelevant, whilst this game is okay there's just too much sloppy play by the players to even put it up there with best performances by either side. As it is I'm a fan of NZ rugby union, they try playing open rugby rather than the gash England play. I'm from England but I don't watch England rugby union, it's shit. I watch proper rugby, rugby league so you going on about whatever it is means fuck all to me. Fact is this isn't the greatest game of rugby nor is it a record attendance for a rugby latch. Hope that helps
