In a playoff game that featured a young Jerry Rice and Steve Young as well as a still prime Joe Montana and Ronnie Lott, the best player on the field that day was Anthony Carter. 🤷🏿‍♂️

This just shows how manipulable history is. Anthony Carter was a 3-time college All-American, Big-10 player of the year, and NFL All-Pro, but because the 49ers were the team of the 80s all the stars on the not-quite-great teams get forgotten. This is like Paul George outplaying KD or LeBron- it’s an upset, but it’s not that much of an upset.

@@keenannorris3309 yes. AC was such a stud. As a Viking fan when people talk about the greatest WR in Viking history, it's always Moss and Cris Carter (tough to argue against those two) and some of the old timers say Ahmad Rashad. But to me, it's AC!

Nah, the picks helped the Cowboys more than they hurt the Vikings. You still have to get the players with the picks, and I don’t have the same faith in Mike Lynn picking them as Jimmy Johnson. The Vikings had a lot of talent, but the 49ers had Montana and Rice.....and a lot of other talent too. That’s the difference.

At least the Saints have the sweetest of all the victories though! Right? Just because they were the only team to win one of the 4 postseason matchups who went on to win a title. Right? As much as people have talked about the recent disheartening losses for the Saints, I have to say the first year I ever followed the whole NFL closely a as a child, I watched this playoff game between this team who had 2 elite WRs, an elite RB, an elite QB, and an all time great kicker, VS this upstart team with an 1800 yard running back, a some other solid players. The game appears to be over in favor of the stacked team, but their all time great kicker, who according to the announcer hadn’t missed all year, comes on and misses a game clinching kick from like 29 yards!! Then that upstart team goes on to win the game and face the Broncos in the super bowl! Man I’ll never forget that. I remember how great Minny had been all year. I just loved this Jamaal Anderson cat, and I was excited to root for the underdog. I can’t imagine a more disheartening loss for a fan base...and then on top of that to have other close playoff losses and all topped off by Brets pathetic, but predictable, throw across his body? UGh!! I feel for Vikings fans!! I was so happy for them when Williams made that blunder and Diggs scored. Man it’s crazy that was Case Keenum right?? Didn’t he finish with a top 4 QBR that year too!? And now he’s right back to being a joke to everyone. Are you a Vikings fan? How many rings y’all have? The purple people eaters won a title right?? I know that name but don’t know about them or who they had as stars

You just had to remind me of this huh? Kinda eerie how the Vikings are coming off a wild card win at New Orleans and are traveling to the bay area in round two like they did in Jan of '88. This '87 div playoff game was one of the worst losses in 49ers history. Niners had the most talented roster hands down that year and should've made it to the Super Bowl but they got bounced by a wild card team. This one still stings a bit.

Definitely an upset but sometimes overstated - remember in '87 the regular players only played 12 games because of a strike. The 49ers went 3-0 in the games with replacement players while the Vikings went 0-3. With regular players, the 49ers were 10-2 to the Vikings' 8-4. Anthony Carter,Chris Carter. WOW! Right or Left punch! Or a run up the gut! With Nelson,Joey Browner was great! And coach Burns,.......known for his straight colorful talks! Good times. 49’rs heavily favored! We controlled 3rd down,..and the clock! And we had our own Rice! We beat Joe and Steve in one game.

Heh, I told someone about this game after this weekend's matchups were set. For Niners fans they better hope history doesn't repeat itself. Jerry Burns was a pretty good coach in much the same mold as Zimmer is today.

Nobody remembers this game because of the Browns-Broncos matchup in the AFC Champ the next week. But Minnesota hung around with the Redskins the in the NFC Champ. as well, losing by just a touchdown (17-10). Pretty impressive, seeing Washington would beat Denver by 32 pts int the Super Bowl

This game for me today is still something of a head scratcher, the final score was 36-24. But that Viking offense only scored 14 points, the only other TD was a pick six return by rookie Reggie Rutland. In fact, Viking kicker Chuck Nelson outscored the Viking offense with 5 FGs. But with Anthony Carter coming up with one stunning play after another, it kept the Viking offense on the field, and the 49er offense off of it. By doing that Joe Montana started cold, and stayed cold until Walsh had to bench him for Young. If that was the Viking game plan, to keep Montana from getting into a rhythm during the game, the Vikings were 100% perfect that day.

What a day by Anthony Carter.....,ALSO...there has never been a better backup QB than Steve Young...lol....that was a once in a lifetime situation in SF with Montana and Young. Walsh had to feel like a King with those two.

I started watching the Vikings in 1979..I know I missed the dynasty years but the 1987 Vikings are my favorite Vikings team ever. Great Thanksgiving win, They beat a good Saints team the week before and this was arguably the greatest 49er team they ever had. The Vikings were loaded with talent. They had two back to back great drafts in 85 & 86. How Mike Lynn could have watched this playoff run and then given away all those future draft picks is beyond comprehension. If Darren Nelson catches that pass in the NFC Championship game who knows. Either the Vikings or Redskins were gonna beat the overrrated Broncos in the Superbowl. It just depended on which NFC team got there. And they were definitely on their way to a Superbowl run in 1988 and possibly a dynasty. You could definitely argue this franchise has never recovered. I call it the 35 year Mike Lynn curse and counting. Is that SOB dead yet?
@ChrisC709

I don't even think it was arguable that this was the greatest 49ers team ever. The 1984, 1989 and 1994 teams were much better.

So in 1987 the Vikings won a wild card game against the saints and went on to play the 49ers in the divisional round. Here it is the 2019 season, and the Vikings beat the saints in the wild card game and are looking to beat the 49ers in the divisional round.

This game is largely forgotten because of the '87 strike and the way the season was kinda lost to time. But the only non-Super Bowl game that even remotely COMES CLOSE to shock value in terms of an upset is Jacksonville vs Denver in 1996. The Vikings back door in to the playoffs (though to be fair, their regular players were 8-4 and their strike "replacement" players went 0-3) and aren't even expected to beat the 12-3 Saints. They wallop them, but then that's played off as "the Saints have never been here and were just glad to be there". Now they have to go play the big, bad, loaded 49ers. Montana and Young combined for 41 TD's in 12 games (!!!)...in 1987. Jerry Rice, the GOAT of GOATs, catches 22 TD's in those 12 games...unreal. And then with Ronnie Lott, Keena Turner, and Michael Carter, their forever underrated defense was #3 in the league. NO ONE expected Minnesota to do anything. And then Anthony Carter goes off. And then they start frustrating Montana and Rice. Then the former Reggie Rutland (now Najee Mustaafa) picks off an out and houses it and it's 20-3. In Candlestick. And they never solve Carter. The magnitude of this upset has to be remembered by history. The 49ers would win the next two Super Bowls DESTROYING the Vikings in the 88 and 89 playoffs by a combined 75-22 as if trying to purge this loss out of their memory. But they can never undo what Minnesota pulled off on this day. If only Darrin Nelson catches Wade Wilson's (RIP) pass in DC the next week...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! That's okay though. The Vikings showed up that day, and the 49ers, who were clearly the best team in football heading into that postseason just laid a complete egg. Top 5 franchise loss in history in my opinion. Hopefully the upcoming game is more like what happened in 1997 instead of 1987. Adding the CBS intro of the era was a nice touch. Thanks for posting anyway :D

At 15:18 abysmal pass to a wide-open Taylor in scoring position! It’s just one play but Young gets his chance and does that! Well, it wound up not mattering in the long run. They sure destroyed the Vikings a year later!

Young played outstanding outside of that one play. The one time he has a guy wide open and he floats it over his head to the other team. He makes that pass and it could have been a great finish.
