The '67 76ers are definitely one of the top ten Greatest team's in NBA history. Great starter's and a Great bench plus the 68-13 regular season record with the Finals victory Validates that.
Your intelligent analysis of early NBA history continues to educate me (I'm 68, but TV coverage was rare in those days outside of major media centers); and, I assume, others interested in the history of the game. It must take substantial effort on your part to find the video footage; thank you for sharing with us.
Wilt only got a drop in the bucket of what he was truly worth in the game. He got a couple championships and that's all good, but he was involved with a lot of historical moments in NBA BBall too. Competition is a true BBall fan's and player's desire and Wilt was there every year. Love it!!
Cunningham was easily the 2nd best player on the team in PER, but only got 26 minutes per game. I know Hondo also came off the bench, but he would still get 35+ minutes. And the following season Hannum still limited his minutes, despite proving himself as a star. I can't help but think that coaching decisions like that is what prevented the Sixers from becoming a dynasty, and why Wilt demanded a trade.
125 ppg is insane this team has to be one of the greatest of all time just this line up is scary quick it seems like thanks for this video the truth coming out
As a Bulls fan I have the 66-67 Sixers as the greatest team of all time they had the greatest center of all time Wilt Chamberlain they had 2 great midrange shooters in Chet Walker and Hal Greer they had an enforcer Luke Jackson who I would say was the Dennis Rodman of his day Walli Jones and they also had a great bench like the Kangaroo Kid Billy Cunningham who I think would have been the 6th man of the year in 66-67 if the award existed then former all star with the then Syracuse Nationals Larry Costello Matt Guokas Dave Gambee and one of the iron men of the 70s Bob Weiss and most importantly this team beat the most dominant team of the 60s the Boston Celtics
@@loydkline he was the Sixers 6th man from 65-68 and then became a starter after Wilt left for the Lakers and when Luke Jackson started suffering from different injures from 1969-1972 he made 4 nba all star appearances and then in the off season he joined the Carolina Cougars in the ABA and made the ABA all star team in 1973
@@manny4552 yeah he played on the New York Nets with the greatest ABA player of all time the Doctor Julius Erving John Williamson who was a good player in the ABA and NBA for the Nets and Pacers and Rich Jones aka House
this team should be along with 72 Laker and 71 Buck, or even 86 Boston and 87 Laker, the balancest play and state of Wilt, the best record in the 60s, beat Oscar, Barry, and the truth and only time defeat healthy Russell in a series in his 13 years rule.
@@No-wc6hw Billy Cunningham got hurt in 1968 playoff ; another excuse ; 1969 playoffs I hear Willis reed & NY Knicks; Walt frazier got hurt vs bill Russell & boston celtic 1969 playoffs;; Willis reed & NY knick never beat bill Russell and 1960s boston celtics in playoffs
Funny that when Wilt got the kind of help that Russell was afforded all those years, he turned out to be the superior player with the superior team, isn't it? #GOAT
Great breakdown! This team is severely underrated! This team was great, and ending the Celtics' dominant run was legendary! I would still have to say that Russell's Celtics are still the greatest team in NBA history. It's next to impossible for a team to accomplish what they did. Today's nba players are nothing like those men were mentally.
I've been a huge Celtics fan since around 1970 or so, and I certainly would rank that '67 Sixers team as one of the greatest of all time. Unfortunately, they get lost amid the decade-long dominance of Russell's Celtics teams and Dr. J's 76ers teams of the late '70s and early '80s. And when people think of Wilt's two titles, they quickly think of his '72 Lakers team first.
The only flaw in the 1966-67 76ers was the lack of an established third guard. That might be a factor in the regular season but not the postseason, when teams reduce their rotations to eight players. Consider that Wilt routinely played the entire game, and this team required only seven healthy players to win a best-of-seven series. (And four were future HOFers!) That's why the 1966-67 76ers are on the short list of greatest postseason teams ev-er.
By any measure, the Top 5 greatest basketball teams in NBA history are the 1967 76ers, 1972 Lakers, 1986 Celtics, 1987 Lakers, and 1996 Bulls. Considering that the 72 Lakers won it all with a 35 year old Chamberlain and 33 year old West, the 87 Lakers won with a 38 year old Abdul-Jabbar, and the 96 Bulls won with Luc Longley at center...the obvious all-time title match would be a battle between the 67 76ers and the 86 Celtics. It's no coincidence that this series would be decided by the 2 greatest front courts in NBA history. The 67 76ers had the most physically imposing front court in NBA history whereas the 86 Celtics had the most skilled front court. Tough call, but I would go with the 86 Celtics in 7 games.
1967 Philadelphia 76ers & pre knee surgery wilt against Willis reed & ny Knicks 1970& 1973, Wilt would've ateup Willis Reed 1970& 1973 for lunch & dinner
I would rank this team as the best team of the 1960's. Along with Wilt's Lakers team of 1972 I would put these two teams that Wilt starred in as in the top 5 of all time. Wilt may have had only two World Championships, but those 2 teams I would consider among the best of all time. When he had the coach and the players he showed why he is the GOAT. A dominant scorer, rebounder, defensive shot blocker, and assist man. Who can do all of that? Of players with 30 rebounds or more in their career Wilt is the all time leader with 160. Russell next with 134. Everyone else combined 109. Too bad they didn't record block shots back in Wilt's days or he would be the career leader in that category as well.
Wilt game us the 'Real Beauty' of Basketball. He could be all finesse and could be a hungry bear attitude. At 7' 1' he was a terror. Bill Russell always had the better supporting cast over Wilt. Imagine Wilt on the Celtics.
this was the Best Team Ever in the NBA . Alex Hannum was the Best Coach in the NBA. Unlike Auerbach w/ the Celtics ( He had talent that was Always Great ) Hannum had to Coach different players, which was way more difficult. Great Job Alex
the six time champion bulls and three time champion sixers will have me COMPLETELY 100% accurately say the best individual statistics go in this EXACT order the #1 rebounding #2 scoring #3 shotblocking from legend wilt chamberlain and #4 scoring from legend michael jordan
I haven’t watched any of the series, but why did it take the Sixers 6 games to beat what seems like, from their win totals and SRS and such, to be a far far worse team?
You can't watch the 1967 Finals because no preserved recordings of the broadcasts exist. But Rick Barry had a scoring average that would not be topped until Michael Jordan in 1993
there was something about the 1967 76ers that was just unbeatable. 1966 they had a different coach and 1968 they didn't play up to their usual standard in the playoffs.
