It was in this place that the Greek world was reconciled during a ritual truce, games given in honor of Zeus. For a week, spectators flocked by the thousands to cheer and applaud the athletes. Pausanias thus relates the fervor which reigned in the stands of the racecourse. In the stadium, different events followed one another: javelin throwing, sprinting, long-distance running, long jump, discus throwing, wrestling. As for the equestrian events, they recalled the legend of Pellos, founding hero of the Games.
