My father CSM passed on 9 September 2021. He served 31 years. Ranger unit, 5 th SFG(Abn) and SFOD. 4 tours of Vietnam. It was our connection. He loved this movie.
I worked special service black ops in Vietnam 1966-67. I went to Fort Benning for jump school and worked with some Green Berets for a while in Vietnam. I still have the beret that they gave me. A brave bunch of guys..
My father (MSG Joseph Morin) was one of 10 or 12 soldiers from Fort Bragg who was selected to appear in the Green Berets movie which was filmed at Fort Benning. I remember in 1968 going to a movie theater at Fort Bragg to watch it with the family for the first time. He had a speaking part in the movie, and I was so proud of him for that. The two weeks he was at Fort Benning for the filming, he told me John Wayne (The Duke) treated them like gold. Thanks Duke for treating my father so well, he remembered that the remaining 32 years of his life.
Gray Fox [ROU] Oh you can, Republicans and Democrats alike are nasty sheep. Wayne was more than that, he was a conservative, a patriot and an American.
@Kenneth Sloan Dude was classified as 3-A for WW2 and was 34 with a bum shoulder he broke at USC and couldnt be enlisted. He had applied to the Naval Academy when he was younger and was rejected and tried getting reclassified as 1-A for WW2 to be drafted but his studio went behind his back and prevented that, he likely wouldnt have been accepted for any duty. That book sounds like a load of horse shit from a pansy who looks to criticize everyone right of mao.
To all veterans of foreign wars, from the European theaters to the Pacific sea and the jungles of southeast Asia and the desert of the middle east, on behalf of a grateful nation, thank you for your sacrifices and services to our great nation. God Bless you. God Bless America.
leo2saints I am very very sorry for your lost I am 56 years old and really did not understand that war until I saw this movie I thank God every day for the men and women who gave the sacrifice for the freedoms we have
I remember taking my future wife to see the movie at the Drive-In Theare when I was a teenager...49 years later I still remember that movie like it was yesterday....Yes, we are still married.
This is my favorite part of the film. Now, the entire film is my favorite. This little boy reflects how many Peterson's never came home. To fight for the Oppressed. I understand now. And I love John Wayne even more than I did before.
Watching John Wayne's Col. Kirby fight back tears himself while trying to muster the courage to confront a tearful Ham Chuck, I don't understand how anyone can claim Wayne was not a "true actor." Great actor, and one of the greatest scenes in motion picture history. I will never NOT cry while watching it.
I saw The Green Berets for the first time in '72 on TV and 47 years later I still get choked up over that closing seen. I don't care if people thought the movie was hokie. Tyranny in this World today still brings despair to millions. John Wayne did a great service to our country in those days and made heros of the real men fighting that Tyranny. Thank you Duke! Tim Sr.
John Wayne was a idol with mine growing up or I should say role model through his movies never heard a bad thing about him in any publication ever and this movie in the end I can't stop crying!!!! But he was right at the end he says let me worry about this my Green Beret this is what the war is all about you and providing a brighter future for you!!!!! :)
Reminds me of 1945 when I was allowed to return to my village in Kazan, Russia. Being one of the few who survived and returned home alive and fortunately unscathed, except for some war wounds, I can still remember my relatives and distant relations and friends and all of the village neighbors crying and weeping, their fathers taking in the news with stolid eyes but with moist eyes and tears around their eyelids. I will never forget that. So many relatives and friends lost in WW II and I can still remember them all. I am now 93 years old. WW II maybe order but it was never over for me.
@@jspee1965 Boy I'm glad RU-vid has the translation feature. It allows me to call you out your very own absolute nonsense. Who are you to doubt the man's story and for what reason?
Same here.expecially hearing the kid crying out Peterson Peterson over and over and then looking at John Wayne and John Wayne look back at him and then when the kid shouts no! no! That part got me crying.
I always get through this movie until the very end...I remember watching this in 1981 or so, right before I enlisted in the US Army, and it had an influence on me to become a Paratrooper....Not a GB, but a Paratrooper...Maybe the proudest thing I ever did....
Alway watched John wayne with my late Dad, sadly lost 2 years ago this month. But this part, always got to him cause he lost his Elder brother in a Japanese camp in 2nd world war.
My condolences. My dad loved this movie and was heartbroken when he couldn't join because of his heart conditions. I, myself, attempted to join but couldn't because of the same reasons.
Well he did operate on NVA, VC, and ARVNs as well as Americans. Says for the first two, an MP had to be present because they were told to try & stab/kill the surgeons & nurses. Sheesh. Our young men deserved much MUCH more gratitude & to me all our Americans there were heroes.
Watched this as a kid (in Leeds UK ) when it first came out in the 1960s, watched it Numerous times, 50 years later it still one of my favourite films, much to the amusement of my wife and grown up daughters, as they know this scene always makes me cry then and now !
I watched this movie when I was a kid, my dad and he bought the movie cassette and this was the saddest part that I had to watch even after over 30 years.
My mom could never stand to watch this scene, she would tear up every time. I think it's because it reminded her of those times her dad made it back from Vietnam knowing that there was always a good chance of never seeing him again.
@@Superiorplatypus in his defense, he was a fervent anti communist and despised the Soviet Union. He fought against the invading red army as Finnish soldier, he then allied himself with Germany and joined the SS, but didn’t take part in the holocaust to anyones knowledge. He then served as an American officer for the next 15-20 years and is considered one of the most influential green berets officers and a true warrior. He was not a nazi sympathizer and shouldn’t be regarded as one by the history books
@@Superiorplatypus Lauri (Larry Thorne) was a soldier his whole life. Declaring "I'm a Nazi" back then meant being in the Nazi party and holding their ideals as way of life. He just hated commies and never as part of the SS did anything to non combatants. He's buried in Arlington. And as Israeli I admire his service. a VERY cool dude. go on and seek life else where and other people to desecrate.
@@Superiorplatypus 1/3 he was in SS. Only because that was the only way to fight communists, previous army had made peace so fighting was not possible. He didnt give a fuck about Hitlers ideology, read your history pls.
This movie screams for a sequel (Not as a reboot movie that seems to be the Hollywood trend now) with a now full grown Ham Chung Kirby as a Green Beret Officer. A visual cue such as Ham Chung holding/ looking at Peter San's beret cover or dialog mentioning something from the 1968 movie as an indirect nod to John Wayne's character Col. Kirby would be quadruple thumbs up awesome.
These people lost so much in their fight to be free of communism and still couldn’t win. So many came to America to find their dream here. They’ve become a great part of our nation. Lest we never forget the sacrifices them and our soldiers made in Southeast Asia.
@@robwillesq That is what you intoned by saying "we". I'm the last guy in the world looking to get offended. That garbage comes from the current leftist playbook.
That last movie I believe to support the Vietnam War God Bless are Armed Forces who had to go through the hell of Vietnam alive or unfortunately didn't make it or later came home and passed on due to the war
Still one of my favorites. Mr Petersaaan. Jeez. God bless the Marines and how they let us sleep tonight. America has forgotten or even worse...don't care.
A Green Beret in my Company, a boat person orphan to the US from Vietnam adopted to nice parents I met, he picked up the nickname Ham Chuck because if we age him back, he was about the age of the boy here. Of course everyone says. "was my Petersen brave"?
Yeah they make basic Marines and basic soldiers look like Boy Scouts. But every branch has their special operations units. Green berets do not make SEALs, pararescuers, MARSOC, Delta Force, etc., look like Boy Scouts. They often train together anyway.
My brother-in-law Patrick, a Marine Corps sniper, brought back a very young fellow from Vietnam... thus saving the entire family that Communists would surely have murdered. May GOD Bless Pat & his family & 'win'/ Nguyen & his family!!!
Duke resurrected George Takei's career with this film after Star Trek was cancelled. Anyone recall George publically recognizing John Wayne during his many appearances on Howard Stern? "Oh my."
The Green Berets was one of the Dukes better movies of the 60s along with True Grit, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and The Sons of Katie Elder also The War Wagon and The Longest Day were also very good.
db2664 You said, "The Green Berets was one of the Dukes better movies..." What did others say...? The Guardian 11 July, 2014 "The Green Berets: how the war was spun" "On The Green Berets' release in 1968, the New York Times said it was "unspeakable … stupid … rotten … false in every detail … It is vile and insane. On top of that, it is dull." Getting on for half a century later, it's still hard to argue with that verdict. At least the Soviets made good propaganda movies." www.theguardian.com/film/2014/jul/11/the-green-berets-reel-history-john-wayne-vietnam-war The War Movie Buff This blog reviews war movies with special emphasis on historical accuracy. Thursday, June 4, 2015 HOW BAD IS IT? The Green Berets (1968) "“The Green Berets” is considered THE WORST VIETNAM WAR MOVIE EVER MADE. Let’s see if that is an exaggeration." .......... "In conclusion, it would be hard for “The Green Berets” to be as bad as its reputation. It is certainly not a good movie. You have to be an ultra-conservative to nod knowingly while you watch it. But if you are a Wayne fan, there is a lot to take comfort in. If you are just an average war movie lover, you can enjoy the action and laugh at the ridiculous moments that make it something of a camp classic. It is definitely not the worst Vietnam War movie, but it is probably the worst big budget one." warmoviebuff.blogspot.com/2015/06/how-bad-is-it-green-berets-1968.html Career After Military 10 Most Inaccurate Military Movies Ever Made NOVEMBER 11, 2012 BY CHRIS BARKER 2. The Green Berets (1968) "There are many flawed Vietnam War movies, but none are quite as out of touch as John Wayne’s The Green Berets. Essentially, the film was a propaganda movie meant to counter the burgeoning anti-war movement. It was grossly misleading, both in military details and in terms of capturing the mood of the time." www.careeraftermilitary.com/10-most-inaccurate-military-movies-ever-made/ And so on. Reviewer after reviewer, many of them ex-military and/or Vietnam Vets, said it was either bad or worse. A couple said it was good as movie just to watch and enjoy as a John Wayne action movie, with cowboys in camo and Indians in black pajamas. But its accuracy was nearly non-existant. Personally, I've never seen it. I did my year in SEA, I have no need to relive it. Certainly not with a movie so many others who were there have little or nothing good to say about it.
@@4y6857 I do not believe that anyone who say this movie complete inaccurate was even in Vietnam This movie got how Viet cong treated the south Vietnam civilians correct , if anything they Hollywood them to easy I have to go with sergeant Barry Saddler he got those people just right Garrett troopers.
My granduncle who fought in WW II and who is the real darthvader5300 passed away at 2022 at age 94, just a few months from his 95th birthday in that year of 2022, he was 18 years old in 1945, I am speaking for him, it is not bullshit and it is not absolute nonsense. My granduncle lives in a village in Kazan, as far as I am concern, even if Kazan has grown engulfing Kazan, his village is still a village. How many villages were swallowed up by growing cities and became part of that city? Think twice. My granduncle is a retired KGB analyst intelligence officer who was trained to speak ENGLISH SO THAT HE CAN PASS him self as a native American, British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand. Never use anything that connects him to Russia, use only foreign technology.
Una producción icónica del gran Duke en legar a la posteridad. Es una pena que se tildara a este gran actor de militarista extremo y no así de un noble patriota. Mis respetos a la memoria de este hombre genial, como fue John Wayne.
This scene and others struck me hard. My best friend who was going to return to adopt and raise me, died in October 1967. He was a green beret master sargent. His mannerisms were almost identical to that of Jim Hutton, playing Peterson, in that movie. Mac..William Wallace McGrew III from Sugar Grove, Ohio passed away in that war in Oct. 1967. There wasn't a dry eye in our house watching Huttons character's death. We were all crying watching this scene in particular. Mac came to his own funeral to let me and his mother know he made it to heaven. The lesson to learn in that is that fighting in war is not murder. God is real and the next unjust war is coming sooner than anyone is prepared for. Rapture will surely be this year and then The Great Tribulation will begin. Repent, change your mind about wanting to sin. Know that Jesus died for your sins and is your only hope of going to heaven. The thief on the cross wasn't baptized. He admitted his guilt and repented. Because he believed Jesus was the Son of God, he got to be in paradise with Jesus that very day. The other refused to believe or repent. His reward is eternal damnation. I know God, Jesus and His Holy Spirit are real. Seek Him and His kingdom while you still can. Don't be in the military fighting against the real Jesus.
