RIP to Michael Clarke Duncan (John Coffey), Michael Jeter (Del) and Harry Dean Stanton (who played Toot-Toot, the goofy inmate who helped with rehearsing the execution). All three of these actors helped make this film special.

I can’t believe they were allowed to show a movie with child r*pe, child m**der, a man burning alive from a botched violent execution, etc… in high school. I was in Highschool in the late 90’s and I thought things were supposed to be LESS uptight then lol I’m not calling you a liar, bc that would be wrong and I don’t know for a fact, but I just don’t believe you. It would be illegal as well for a teacher to show an R rated film to anyone under 17.

Telling the parents of the little girls the truth would have only caused more pain because the parents had hired Wild Bill as a worker. If they found out he was the one who killed their little girls they would have had the pain of knowing that they brought the killer into their home and their mistake had caused their daughters deaths. John Coffey was a stranger and he had no family so taking the blame was the most merciful thing he could do to help ease the pain of the parents. Even when dying, by keeping that secret he was helping others to heal. I think that is what he wanted.

You're right in so many ways, but also remember during those times they would've never believed it unless they actually saw it. Many had the mind set of the lawyer or worse. That's why I can only smirk when he says "By a jury of your peers".

@@JITKanno0 The system did NOT fail John Coffey.. lack of evidence and witnesses to the horrific crimes against the girls is what failed to make a compelling case for John. Not to mention that Wild Bill was dead and unable to confess. Thank you, C. Smith for presenting a much broader view.

That's the aspect of this film that many people seem to forget. When one thinks "Green Mile", he has John Coffey in front of him. There is absolutely nothing wrong about this, but actually all characters in this movie are incredibly well developed and it is clear what kind of profound symbolism they convey! This movie is a masterpiece, enough said.

I read this book before it came out on DVD in 1999. I was in high school in my study hall hour, in America that's a class just for catching up on home work or whatever. I can remember vividly reading the end and tearing up. A couple guys saw me and immediately pounced on me calling me a and I quote, "A faggy book worm". It affected me so much that I stuffed my emotions down for years. I was only 15. It took so many years to get past what others thought of my emotions. Now? I tear up just like you guys at stuff like this all the time. Just took time to realize they were assholes, and I was just showing my emotions.

Mr. Jingles is about 60 years old at the end of the film. Mice, depending upon the species, live from 2-3 years old on average. For another Stephen King novel turned into film is "Needful Things". A different film , by George Eliot is "A Simple Twist of Fate" by Steve Martin. A lighthearted Christmas film to watch is "A Christmas Story" set in 1940's midwest. Author Jean Shepherd narrates the film and has a brief cameo appearance in the film.

If they tell the truth, who is going to believe them, besides he is black, in the south of the United States and in the 30s, no one will investigate or want to, if they do not execute him others will and if they help him escape they will be the ones who end up in a cell. Something a lot of people overlook... The average lifespan of a mouse (like Mr. Jingles) is 5-7 years. Mr. Jingles was first noticed when Paul was around 44 (no telling how old Mr. Jingles was at the time). Paul said that he was 44 when John was executed and was currently 108 (64 years had passed). That means that Mr. Jingles has lived about 9 times his normal lifespan. The average lifespan of a male is around 77 years. Imagine.... if Paul lives for the same 9 times a normal lifespan, he will quite possibly live to be around 693 years old. His Green Mile is very, very long.

State Dept. of Corrections Supply Room Steward at the end of the year does an audit of which prison facilities need what supplies for the coming year. Whether it be bedding, cleaning supplies, food or light bulbs. When going through the books from the different prisons in the state, getting ready to submit an order for each of the prisons, the steward made an interesting observation, the Cold Mountain Penitentiary had gone through more light bulbs this past summer than all the other penitentiaries combined. The numbers just didn't make any sense, how could one facility go through that many bulbs and what are they going to need for the upcoming year? Not being able to reconcile these riddles, he decides to call down to Cold Mountain, (where Johns Coffey was held and executed death row on the Green Mile) and when he finally got to talk to the custodian who takes care of the building, he was of little help. All the officers who were working that wing of the prison either quit or transferred to different jobs. The only thing which he did say that only left more questions than answers was, "it was probably because of a really bad thunderstorm which knocked out the lights." Which I guess would explain why they would need so many bulbs, but there is just one problem with this. This was in the 1930's during the Great Depression, during a time of great financial hardship, there also was no rain to speak of. Given the number of light bulbs that prison needed that year, there was no storms.

The paradox, but any movie by the remarkable and outstanding director Frank Darabont, according to books by not less remarkable and outstanding writer Stephen King, was not awarded Oscar 😶 And, above all to me is UNCLEAR as it was possible to leave SUCH outstanding, remarkable and first-class (and it is only a small part of those epithets which deserves) a game of the actor Michael Clark Duncan?! I consider that he nevertheless should be awarded with posthumous Oscar. Perhaps for merits before a kinoisskustvo, or some else nomination. But the main thing that it will be fair!

This is a very intresting movie. And Im so happy that The Homies took the time to react to it. In this movie we have this man coming here accused and jailed for a crime he did not commit. The only things he do is helping people. Healing them. Taking away their diseases. He later gets executed in the most gruesome way. For a crime of others. While some of the accusers in the audience mocks him and longing for his death, at the same time people standing around him knows that he is innocent. In this movie his name is John Coffey (JC). Does this man remind you of anyone? Over 2000 years ago, a man came and he went around, healing people. Also removing their diseases and only did good. But they jailed and mocked him while he walked towards his death. And while others knew that he was an innocent man, they still killed him in the most horrible way imaginable for the sins of others. That man was Jesus Christ (JC). This is what people do. People will always hate and kill what they do not understand. Stephen King is a believer in God. And I do think that he did an awesome job with the character of John Coffey. And you Homies did an awesome reaction. Bless all of you. 🌹

1. IRL James Cromwell is a vegan and didn't want to grill meat for the BBQ scene but was told that in 1935 people actually ate meat so he agreed to have some on the grill. 2. RE Percy: Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. KARMA's a Bitch. BTW Kudos to Doug Hutchison for the great job of being Percy.👌 3. A little fun fact: Toot Toot the trustee is played by Harry Dean Stanton.(RIP) The other guards' names are Harry Terwilliger/Jeffery DeMunn and Dean Stanton/Barry Pepper. 4. IRL both David Morse and James Cromwell are about the same height as Michael Clark Duncan (RIP). They used planks, a small bed and smaller chair along with trick photography to make John taller. 5 The scene where John takes Mr. Jingles for safe keeping before Del's execution they used a real mouse and it pooped on Paul's shoulder and he brushed it off. 6. Now we know what the "day old is fine" dry toast is for. 7. EVERYBODY cries and has to take time to reflect. Congratulations you just experienced the GREATEST MOVIE EVER. 8. 4 words for you: Stephen King. You're WELCOME!

John Coffey uses Percy to punish "Wild Billy" for what he's done, knowing that with Billy dead there will be no way to exonerate himself of that crime, which seals his fate, and he welcomes it. Ironically, it also serves as punishment for Percy for his own cruelty.

They can't stop because the execution is set for a specific time to allow for last second interventions by the state governor or reprieves of sentence due to appeals processes. And also because a delay allows the prisoner to become agitated and struggle against the straps potentially damaging the chair and delaying the operation of the death row wing of the prison.

Yes, ladies, John Coffey is a Christ figure. He appeared out of nowhere, as if he had just “fallen out of the sky.” He had foreknowledge of future events. He can see the good or evil that is in men’s hearts. He can heal illness and afflictions and resurrect the dead (if it’s not too late). He is innocent, with a pure soul, yet he is made to suffer and die because of the sins and wickedness of others. And even his initials are J.C., just like Jesus. (Note the scene when John is watching his first ever “flicker show” and the light from the movie projector is shining from behind, illuminating his head just like a halo - the Christian symbolism is unmistakable.)

As i said i n my comment above, ELLE saw this last yr for the channel and I guess Michelle saw it and looks like the girl on left saw it also from the comments they made of recalling events that happened in the film.

Ladies When Percy didn't soak the sponge before placing on top of Del's head, he just violated main rule during execution. He could be charged with felony cruel and unusual punishment because Del suffered the pain thru the execution. Now, that's why lethal injection is use in executions.

I didn't see this at the thearter, but always wonder if everybody leaving was wiping tears and blowing noses.

I got completely distracted towards the end with your dog’s obsession of sucking your fingers and you being all casual about it. 😂😂

Poor Ellie and Vicki, they should never watch this again. They are so emotional during this and I can't stand their pain let alone what happened to John. Still 1 of the best movies ever made though.

I saw when Elle watched it alone and wow she was crying and yellin at the screen at Persey even worse than this combined reaction. Even Michelle got emotional here. I guess she saw it before the girls started the channel
