When Dell says, "I sure wish I could have met you two somewheres else", it just tears me up every time. Really a great movie (and follows the book(s) really closely. One of the truest and best adaptations I've ever seen). Michael Clarke Duncan really knocked it out of the park in this. RIP, Michael.
@Joao Santos It is still a very close approximation of the book(s), especially compared to many other book-to-movie translations. Yeah, in the book it tells us that Dell raped and murdered an underage girl, then when he set her body on fire to destroy the evidence it caught a nearby building on fire and killed 6 more people.
Another thing missing from the movie is the fact that Paul was on a Greyhound bus that crashed and he was the only survivor. (I think that’s how his wife died, but it’s been a long time and I can’t remember for sure). And that was his first hint that he’d been given a kind of invulnerability by John Coffey. I think he also says that since John Coffey he hadn’t ever been sick.
@@daerdevvyl4314 Wow, forgot about that! It's been years since I read the 6-part novelette series. Makes you shudder to think what Paul is going to look like a thousand years from now since he does seem to age.
In the book, Paul laments killing what he views as empty shells that were briefly possessed by some evil force to do what they did-- he feels that the force moves on to someone else, leaving them to fry an essentially now harmless soul.
very sweet seeing your pup trying to comfort you. This movie is one of those rare gems that just saying the name will bring it instantly back to you. The emotions it stirs are strong and it is such a well written and well made movie.
Don't be sorry for crying,I'm a 59 yo man and it tears me up every time, sadly Michael Clarke Duncan who played John Coffey died unexpectedly a few years back. His performance in this was awesome.
"This one was a, tough one"!!!!! When i first saw this movie, i was actually speechless!!! I never seen a movie that was this POWERFULL before!!! So i couldn't speak for about an hour!!! This was one of the, BEST movies that i've ever seen in my life, and i'm 65 years old and, i've seen some fantastic movies but not like this one!!! Thank You for sharing this masterpiece.
Great reaction, it's hard not to cry watching this film, the majority does. Now you have to see "The Shawshank Redemption" another great film based on another Stephen King novel.
And this is King's favourite film adaptation of his work. He said that the atmosphere and feel that the director and cast were able to create was perfect; and precisely what he had in mind when he was writing the book.
I can't even count the number of reactions I have seen to this over time. I tear up every time. I think it is worse because even before this movie I came to love Michael Clark Duncan and I recall his untimely death whenever I see this film. Anyway, I loved your reaction and have subscribed.
@Joseph Scally Thank you Joseph! Oh my goodness I was so sad when I read up on this film afterwards & found out Michael Clark Duncan passed away. So very sad. What an amazing talent he was & seemed to be a very lovely man in real life as well.
I have PTSD and anxiety issues. When he started breaking down in the beginning during the movie, and had to get himself riiiiiiight outta there right quick....I FELT that. Sometimes terror can hit you even in the middle of a beautiful moment.
Hi, Jen, I watched this tonight just because it's one of your reactions I hadn't seen before. So much for those who say you don't cry. You're such a lovely person, Jen. And pet Boston for me, he really came through for you.
Stephen King's book came out in 1996 as a 6 part serialized novel, 1 more part each month. I remember very well the monthly queues in front of the bookstore where I bought it. Only 3 years later the movie was released, which fascinated me just like the book.
27:18 It never ceases to amaze me how dogs respond when their owners are feeling sad, and how they try to comfort you. Look at the concern in his eyes! That dog just wants you to be happy.
@@erictaylor5462 Interesting question, for me I have ALWAYS referred to animals by she until told or proven otherwise no matter the animal. Always have, always will.
@@Nominenobody To be fair, I doubt if animals care if we use the wrong pronoun. They can understand some words, and they seem to only understand words that effect them directly, like "walk" or "dinner" and maybe a few commands but I doubt they really understand human speech.
I tend to cry when I see others cry; so I have learned in the short time since I've found your channel to always have tissue ready when I get a notification of your new reaction. Stay Awesome, and give little Boston a belly rub for me 😁
@Ronny Boss Thanks for watching Ronny & always encouraging me :) I'll try to throw in some no-tears movies sometimes too lol! Bos loves a good belly rub, will do ☺
I saw this movie in the theater when it came out. I went with a few female friends, not knowing what the movie was about. I was ugly crying by the end. Great movie.
48 year old man. To this day I cannot watch this movie without tears in my eyes. Watching this reaction with tears in my eyes now. The edits are really good.
Great reaction. This movie is a classic. I remember watching it in the theaters when it first came out and I think everyone in the theaters was cryingfor John. 🥺 I highly recommend watching Shawshank Redemption. It's also a classic
I'm 75 years old. I've watched this film more than 20 times. I own a dvd of The Green Mile. I need a box of tissues every time I watch. John Coffey's dialogue at the end, those in his cell when the guards ask him if they should let him go and those he spoke while sitting in the electric chair motivate m to think about the cruelty in this world and my own contribution to that cruelty.
Appreciate the compassion shown while watching this movie! This is definitely a great one to clear out the tear ducts. Excited to see the next, whichever it might be.
@@jenmurrayxo 17:29 Sadly 😞 The actor who played Dale actually passed away about three or four years before Michael Clarke Duncan Passed.... These two guys were *LEGENDS* and are GREATLY MISSED.
A wonderful reaction to a wonderful movie! Like a few others have said, Shawshank Redemption definitely. It's arguably the best movie ever made and Frank Darabont directing Stephen King adaptations are usually masterpieces. But it also hard to go wrong with any classic Tom Hanks movie. Keep it up! :)
@The last centurion Thank you! I'm sure you know editing is the most time consuming part of these videos, so that's really nice to hear! More to come :)
Agreed, I've seen a lot of reaction vids to this film and everyone else always seems to leave out the important parts. Its not like the majority of the viewing audience haven't seen this film more than once. They just want to save it for their Patreon site. If your presentation and reaction are good and genuine, then you will get a visit from your subscribers at your Patreon. Keep up the good work.
10:28 "He should get that checked out." I think that's a key reason this part of the story was set in 1935. See, the ideal treatment for UTI is antibiotics which, nowadays, are available all over the place. You can get 'em in every hospital, clinic and pharmacy. Not so in the 1930's. Paul didn't know about 'em. It's a good bet his _doctor_ didn't know about 'em. The treatments they had were about as bad as the UTI. Hence, Paul hesitates.
I just discovered your channel...LOVE it. This is one of my favorite tear jerkers. Doesn't matter how many times I watch the movie, & it's been a lot, or how many reactions I view I bawl like a baby. 😪
1. YOU WILL CRY 2. Dabbs Greer/old Paul was ill during production so his part was done later. 3. Goof: In 1935 black and white inmates were not kept in the same prison. 4. In the book King briefly covers why the Chief and Del are on death row. 5. This movie was nominated for best supporting actor and best cast but sadly didn't win. 6. Players in other King adaptations: Jeffery DeMunn: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, Storm of the Century and William Sadler: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist. David Morse: The Langoliers. 7. Goof: Electricity makes the body contract. Del wouldn't be able to scream. 8. IRL James Cromwell is a vegetarian and didn't want to grill meat for the BBQ scene but was told that in 1935 people actually ate meat so he agreed to have some on the grill. 9. RE Percy: Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. KARMA's a Bitch. 10 EVERYBODY cries and has to take time to reflect. Congratulations you just experienced the GREATEST MOVIE EVER. 11. 4 words for you: Stephen King. You're WELCOME!
Great reaction Jen! This movie really gets you in the feels! The Best part is seeing your doggo come to the rescue and become your emotional support animal! Good Doggie! 🐶 Good to see you have your support team around you! 😁 Thanks Jen you're Awesome!❤️💛
HONEY this is one of my favorites! When the angel in the end said they kill them with their kindness and they do this all across the world. OMG I about rolled on the floor sobbing! OMG how our pets know when we are emotional! That part made me want to cry lol!
In the novel he keeps the mouse in that far off shed because one of the orderlies is basically another generation of Percy who's become fixated on him and is basically slowly ramping up to kill him-- he doesn't want the guy to get his hands on Mr. Jingles/Steamboat Willy as he's also breifly known in the book.
Great book(s)-ish! Great movie! An innocent guy with the initials J. C. executed the same way like two criminals alongside him ... John's speech about people treating each other badly gets me every time. When you hear stories from grandparents you think the world was a better place. "I love mankind, it's people I can't stand." - Linus Love you dog :o).
I know when i joined your patreon this was one of the first full reactions i watched but seems i never watched this yt edit shame on me as along with Shawshank is one of my favourite movies , amazing acting, amazing storytelling, an emotional rollercoaster that wreaks you . No matter how many times i watch this and its a fair few i shed plenty of tears 😢 . I really really enjoyed your reaction to this one jen you were tense but mesmerized with a look of concern throughout i get that cuz SAME 🫂 ive said it before and i will say it again you have such a beautiful tender heart jen youre a true beautiful person and the tears you shed as heartbreaking to watch as it was it just shows how much you care and how a movie can just break us thats a powerful thing and kibda magical. Damn it i have to keep wiping my tears off my phone screen 🥺 . MVP goes to boston for comforting you jen hes such a good boy 💙 ty for watching this awesome movie jen hugs 🤗 10/10
One of the best King adaptations - and the 2nd one by Frank Darabont who also did SHAWSHANK and THE MIST - with a powerhouse cast and yes all the feels. Great job Jen.
I've seen a lot of reactions to this wonderful movie, and I thought I didn't need to see any more, but yours was by far the most moving and I'm so glad I caught it. Nothing wrong with being sensitive -- it just means you have a kind heart. And heaven knows we need more of that.
I first read these in my senior year in high school, they were released in small parts. Jump about 20 years later, my daughter hated reading but had to give a 1 page at least 300 word book report to the class on any "big novel" as required in her freshman year high school. I gave her these small books 2 weeks apart, the last 3 books she read in a day. I gave all of them to her saying she just read her first novel... and its by Stephen King... she submitted a 6-page book report that super surprised her class/teacher as it dealt w/ very serious and adult situations.
I was building my Stephen King collection when i heard he had a new prison book coming out, about death row. it was one of, if not the only book i was able to buy on release day. I tore through it in 18 hrs over 2 days. I was ugly crying by the end, stayed in my room for an hour to collect myself before coming out for dinner. Heard they were making it into a movie very quickly after. Made sure i saw the movie on opening night. Whole family was bawling. Your reactions have brought all that back just like the 1st time i read/watched. Very well done!
Tom Hanks is a really Great actor! Some of my favorites that you might want to check out are "Big", "Turner and Hooch", "Apollo 13" and Forrest Gump"! Michael Duncan was Great in "Armageddon" with Bruce Willis and the rest of great actors in that movie! I wish you the Best of Luck with your channel!
This is the first movie I got to watch you react to Jen. I can see you're a gentle, sweet soul. It affected you the way I think it affected me the first time I saw it. I used to think I was like a statue...emotionless. When I see movies like this, I can see I'm not that way at all. Thanks for letting me share the experience with you.
Such a powerful movie and an amazing cast. It is so good I can't watch the entire thing anymore....Empathy can have its downsides but overall can create a better world... Pets (in particular Dogs) are amazing... full of unconditional Love and know when you are in distress... Sending positive Vibes! 🥰
The average lifespan for a mouse is 2 years so imagine how much longer he has to live if he doesn't have an accident. He had already outlived everyone that he cared about.
For Paul, I think the truly horrific part is that even though he has, most likely, hundreds of years to live, he is, clearly, aging, and his body is getting frail. If he is like this at 108, wheat will the next two hundred, three hundred years be like?
Great reactions, Jen! This is such a touching, heartbreaking movie, there is no shame in shedding tears watching it. Tremendous cast who did tremendous work. Beginning with Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan and all the way through. Even Sam Rockwell (Wild Bill) and Doug Hutchison (Percy) who made everyone hate them. But one person everyone, every reactor, leaves out is Dabbs Greer (old Paul). His bookending of the story was just masterful. His final monologue moves me every time. The thing that I'm most taken with is for each execution Paul is the one comforting the prisoner before the execution. But for Coffey's execution, it's John who is trying to comfort the guards. And during the actual execution, the camera only shows John at the very first surge of electricity. The rest of it is seeing the guards' reactions from Dean to Brutal to Harry to Paul. Showing how the execution is affecting THEM. I've always thought of John Coffey as a variation of a sin-eater. a traditional type of spiritual healer who uses a ritual to cleanse the dying of their sins. The sin-eater absorbs the sins of the people he or she serves and typically works for a fee. Although John takes upon himself the sickness of others, and of course, doesn't work for a fee. Some people have also mentioned him to be an angel. Especially when his defense lawyer says, "It's like he dropped out of the sky".
24:16 "I'm tired, boss. Tired of being on the road, lonely as a sparrow in the rain. Tired of not ever having me a buddy to be with, or tell me where we's coming from or going to, or why. Mostly I'm tired of people being ugly to each other. I'm tired of all the pain I feel and hear in the world everyday. There's too much of it. It's like pieces of glass in my head all the time. Can you understand?" I understand, John :(
I have seen many reactions to this movie. With your editing and soft, accepting manner, you nearly brought me to tears at the end. I didn’t think that could happen again. I hope to see more fine dramas with you.
I remember back in the mid-90s the book this movie was based on, and how it was released in multiple installments at first, like individual chapters in paperback form. BDalton's in our local mall would have a rack displaying them all. People couldn't wait for the next one to come out.
Just found your channel recently thanks to the algorithm and I'm a new fan. This was a great reaction and I'm glad you chose to do this movie. I would, also, like to put in my vote for "the Shawshank Redemption" to follow this one up. It is no where near as sad but still an amazing movie on the same level. It is also based upon a Stephen King novel as "The Green Mile" is. For a happier reprieve... I'd love to watch "The Princes Bride" with you if you haven't already seen it. Such a Fun movie. It will crack you up. Your raw reactions are what makes these kind of channels successful. That is what I enjoy about your reactions. They are heart felt, honest, and raw. Thank you for your channel. I look forward to watching more movies with you
You know, that's so funny. I've seen this movie a zillion times and I have seen Alien a zillion times and it never clicked in my head that was the same guy. Good catch.
Thanks for taking on this movie. It is an emotional rollercoaster for sure, but the casting and acting are amazing. Trust me, we cried along with you. Looking forward to watching more of your reactions. Subscribed.
This movie constantly makes me cry, especially cuz there were never any justice for John. He tried to explain but people misunderstood. Tried to take back the 'loss of their life', but everyone just thought he wanted to take back the murdering.
Well done Jen! This is a great movie 🍿 I’m glad you enjoyed it too. P.s. I used to have a chihuahua just like yours, it’s a very sweet dog you have there, I could it wanted to give you cuddles to cheer you up 😅
If anyone can watch this flick show and not get emotional…. I hope I never meet them. This is one of those that will always make me shed a tear. No matter how many times I watch it. It was nice seeing your pupper showing you some affection when you were tearing up. They always seem to know. I did notice him worried about you in your John Wick video as well. You know the scene. You have a sweet boy there.
Hi Jen I have a Friend named Jen and she gets Emotional at Movies . This one really tore me up It really got me In Tears . there are Many who have gotten sent to Prison for Crime they didn't do when dean couldn't hold back his tears . and John Coffey you could see the Tears in his eyes . RIP Michael Clarke Dunkin . Jen Thank you for your Posting this you are Great Lady Charlie
I subscribed because A- Your reaction seemed genuine and B- Your thumbnails aren't stupid. I get soo tired of reactors that over do it or have thumbnails of a constant shocked look in their face. Good job! I'll be watching your Alien reaction next and IF you liked that movie I suggest you watch Aliens ( arguably better than the first which I agree! ) Thanks again for a good reaction!
The toughest, most stoic man _freely_ admits to crying when he sees this movie; especially the _first_ time. The first time you see this movie, if you _don't_ cry, you just might have something wrong with you, and you may need to see a counselor.
I wonder how many people notice all the parallels. This is a Christmas movie, really. "Where did he come from ? He didn't just fall out of the sky." "John Coffey (J____ C_____) power of healing and resurrection, Miracle mile - green mile. The one guard who was mainly tasked with carrying out his sentence. It's there. It's all there.
Notice that the ashes from Johns mouth disintegrate when they are exposed to light. That would tie in with his fear of the dark. Also Melinda says they were both in the dark and found each other. During the flicker show the camera positions so we see John's head surrounded by a halo. Like Jesus John dies for anothers sins. From the age of Paul and Mr. Jingles it is logical that John has lived hundreds of years and went through being taken as a slave in Africa which would explain why he can;'t remember how he got many of his scars. He has felt the cruelty and pain that humanity can deal out.
I’m glad you watched this movie, is one of my favorites. Sad but also full of good feelings. ❣️ I will suggest you to watch “ Fried Green Tomatoes “ is a movie of a Great Friendship, one of the few beautiful movies. But prepare to cry. I’m a man but always bring tears to my eyes I. ❣️
If we figure that Mr. Jingles lived at least 32 times the lifespan of a normal mouse (they typically live 2 years and here he is alive 64 years later), then Paul should live at least until the year 4343! Paul was 44 in 1935, so he was born in 1891. If he lives 32 times a normal life span, starting from when he got the gift, then he should live about 2452 (32 x 78 = 2496; minus 44) years from 1891.
Sam Rockwell is such a good guy! I saw hin in several movies and I love him. This is the only movie he is playing a bad guy, and I hate this guy. But Sam Rockwell is one of the goods! Just watch "Way Way Back" He is a brilliant actor!
Mid 30s there weren't antibiotics to treat urinary infection with, in '37 the came up with sulfanilamide which worked, and penicillin took until mid 40s to be available.
A surprise for sure but a welcome one. This is my favorite movie (I love Stephen King). It has all the emotions and it is presented so effective. I teared up multiple times during your reaction (and I have seen lots of them). Thanks for sharing your journey with us, Jen. «Dances With Wolves» is another recommendation. I know that there is much more popular requests but this movie is special and after your reaction to «The Green Mile» I think this would fit on your channel perfectly. Oh, by the way: Graham Greene is part of the cast.
you should try "dead man walking" starring sean penn and susan saradon, watched it when i was like 12 and was the first movie to make me cry.. i feel its a forgoten classic, also it was directed by Tim Robins.. great movie :D
I saw all rhese films opening night on the big screen. Lots of spoilers in this one, so for those who saw it early, friends would ask about it. "What haiiens?!" Not wanting to give anything away, we would say, "Luke fights Vader single-handedly." *snicker*
