i went to see this with my boyfriend and it was only “scary” because of the jump scares lol. i hate jump scares too. i prefer more psychological horror movies i guess. but yeah it wasn’t that good, i wanted to leave like 20 minutes in.

I knew I wasn't gonna like this when i found out it was rated r and I was right. The original 2004 version was rated pg 13, so they had to really really try to scare us. This one was a blood bath. They focused so much on the gore aspects and jump scares that it just was like watching all the other horror movies that have come out. Very disappointing
This movie was boring from beginning to end. And I didn’t understand the overall plot because they kept introducing new characters. I was very excited about seeing this movie, but was so disappointing after I left.
When you said "Three sentences of text" im assuming your talking about the quote that says "When someone dies in the grip of a powerful rage... a curse is born. The curse gathers in that place of death. Those who encounter it will be consumed by its fury." Thats something all of the Grudge movies have, even the Japanese ones. So not having that would be similar to not having John Carpenter's score in Halloween. At least for me.
Sarah, please do a review of Underwater! 🐙 I didn't think it was going to be that scary of a creature feature. However, I didn't take into account my massive phobia of deep water. The scares were pretty good. With my anxiety amped up to 100 I almost burst my Mom's eardrum from screaming. After hearing this review I'm happy we skipped out on The Grudge!
The trailer tricked me into thinking that my wife Kayako was going to actually be in the film for longer than a 1 second cameo. So not only is this film egregiously boring and not scary, but like this video is about, it’s not even a Grudge movie. 3/10 from me, the only saving graces were that the acting and camera work were nice.
Totally agree with everything you said! I didn’t get that feeling that I am invested in the movie and it’s cast, which I usually get. I wish I didn’t waste my money on it. Should’ve seen frozen 2 instead🙄 lmao

Well, if I recall correctly, didn't Kayako get her neck snapped and that's why she makes that guttural "uuuuuhh" noise? Therefore, the ghost in this movie making the noise makes zero sense.
Yeah it really doesn’t make...any sense at all for the other ghosts to make that gargling sound. The reason for Kayako making that sound (in the American Grudge universe) is her husband Takeo killed her by breaking her neck, it’s literally her death rattles as he crushed her throat. The reason she stumbles around and crawls across the floor is because she broke her ankle trying to escape from her husband. So uh yah those behaviors are very specific to Kayako and how she died, not a universal ‘thing’.
I believe the japanese version also explains the curse in the very beginning as well, maybe they were replicating that? But yea the movie overall wasnt very good lol
I was hoping you’d make a review sort of video on this movie! I saw it opening night with my family, and as a kid I was terrrrified of the grudge, definitely the scariest movie for me, so you can imagine I was super excited. I agree that this movie didn’t feel like a “real” grudge movie and I was so disappointed. I could say so much more but you touched on all the good points and I completely agree with them all! Lol
So I took an American film class in college and it was basically comparing original foreign films to American remakes & discussing what changes make it better for the American audiences. Anyways I did my final paper on the Grudge. And I COMMITTED; I watched ALL of the Japanese originals including 4444444444 & Katsumi short films. So I was a bit excited to see a remake but also a bit worried, so I'm glad I waited to watch your review. The reason Kayako makes the sound is because of the way she died, crushed windpipe from snapped neck. So yeah, it wouldn't make sense for other ghosts that died in different means to make the same noise.
so glad you covered this, it honestly felt like a channel 5 or lifetime movie. I was really excited to see faith Matheson because she was great in insidious but even her character was bad too. I don't even know how they made it THAT bad.

Show don't tell is a good rule of thumb. Except for Cats (2019). 😄 I haven't seen this and probably won't but I still like Ju-On better than The Grudge (2004). Great review 👍
I kind of like "The Grudge 4" cause the acting, cinematography, atmosphere is really cool. Do agree the jump scares wasn't great expecting, the most time of movie we get no character development like u said "Way Too Many Actors in One Movie". I give a D- 3 Stars No Thumps Up cause if doesn't sucks but could be better.
Watched this last night. Have never fallen asleep watching a movie especially not in a movie theater! However the day finally came and i fell asleep in the theater watching this movie.
Just from the title, I KNEW IT. I kept saying watching the trailer that aside from the one scene they literally STOLE from the original, nothing in that trailer felt like The Grudge. I knew it was going to be a shit movie. This was probably supposed to be an original horror before filming, but the studio made them add Kayako and the Grudge name to get more views.
the fact that kayako wasn't even in the entire movie is sooo disappointing. it's like a scam :( if she was included in it, I'm pretty sure the movie would honestly be wayy better than how it actually turned out..

Ugh! This makes me so sad, I had high hopes because I love the original Grudge. I wish they would have just left it alone, the Grudge isn’t even old! I’m glad I didn’t waste my money going to see it.
Love the video and your points but personally I didn't mind the movie. I didn't think it was great, but like you said, the acting was good, I thought a lot of the camera shots and visuals were pretty good. I liked the indie vibes with the on-screen text. I kind of interpreted it as a spin off of the Grudge that seemed to not give nearly enough credit to the original movies, which was definitely weird and did them a disservice.
I agree with everything you said, but I still personally enjoyed it for what it was. I didn't love it and certainly was disappointed with quite a bit of it though. It's definitely not a movie I would ever want to watch again. I mostly just wish the spirits were utilized in a different way. It was too cliche paranormal. I was hoping for more of the grudge-esque ghost moments we're used to.
Even though I watch the Grudge every year at Halloween, I find it fairly boring. Soo this one gave me no hope.I might half watch it when it goes on Crave while browsing my phone 😂
I laughed so hard when john cho was just chillin in the bathtub, his posture looked so uncomfortable like I thought he was alive 😂😂 OKAY, so lemme tell you how many times these guys behind us farted, the whole movie was silent so guess how many times, also the font they used pissed me off so much.. the ending, dont even get me started. Someone farted again then too. worst and best theater experience.
i was so mad that they changed the designs of the ghosts. they just looked like lame ass zombies. not scary at all. but other than that i didnt really hate it i guess, it was OK i guess??? but it wasnt nearly as good as Ju-On. and i totally agree it definitely didnt feel like a grudge movie.
I watched it with my boyfriend, parents and two friends as a birthday gift (I love horror movies, literally saw it on my birthday) and honestly, we were all bored. My mom is somewhat jumpy about horror movies and she dead ass fell asleep. I didn’t feel scared and I was so confused for most of it. The ghosts looked more like zombies (which doesn’t scare me as much??) they should’ve stuck with one POV instead of like 3. There’s so many characters and it seemed all over the place.
I was about to spend the same amount cause I wanted to go to AMC and my boyfriend was like, “Naaaaaah.” And we went to our local Cinemark and paid $8 for both of us THANK GOD. And the jump scares and the music didn’t even match! My favorite characters I wanted the story to follow was the old couple. I loved that storyline. And the ending was SO BAD, we were laughing.
Yeah I get it, "You should have seen it coming! Of course it was going to suck! Fuck you, it's JANUARY!". Here is the thing. Pesce was a cool pick for director, Raimi was in a hot streak (Evil Dead -> Don't Breathe -> Crawl), and the cast is damn awesome. This. Fucking. Stings. XD
I think there is a glaring plot hole in this movie that my friends and I all noticed, but I don't want to say exactly and ruin the movie. It has to do with the old lady's fingers (THAT scene from the trailer), didn't it happen twice in the movie with the same hand months apart?
Also Sarah Michelle Gellar's character DIED in the 2nd Grudge movie while she was STILL in Japan. How could she have moved into take care of someone in America, when she DIED in Japan?
Have you even seen the movie? Sarah wasn't even in this movie, this is about a character that was a care taker for the old woman before Sarah goes their. So maybe actually see the movie or read things about it before making silly comments

yeah, the other ghosts making that noise wouldn't make sense unless they were killed in the same way as Kayako and having their necks broken which would have them produce that death rattle sound. :0

I agree completely. One of my biggest issues was the Grudge lost its old interest, what made it great. The old grudge was so grungey and abstract and minimal that she was creepy as hell. Whereas these are just over saturated zombie looking way too human and real "ghosts" the same bullshit we see in the conjuring universe after the first movie, the nun, Annabelle, La llororna 😫 Hollywood horror just has no creativity or skill anymore. It's all in your face, don't have to think about it, cheap jump scare bs

@possessedbyhorror The opening lines about how the Grudge works is a trademark of all the films even Ju-On. But yes after the movie leaves Japan it's utter trash.
The issue I find is that....they used so many aspects of how Kayako would stalk and killer her victims yet....they didn't want to use her....the american family it now follows...they shouldn't have the death rattle etc etc....they made it into another current horror conjuring trend with it's theme and colours and art style that it misses the point completely on what makes the Grudge....the Grudge. Kayako is and always will be what makes the Grudge movies so good. She's such an iconic and ruthless killer, that is what I want to see. It's a shame that they will most likely never touch the Grudge series again after this...Hollywood deserves another good attempt at Kayako's story. High hopes for the Netflix series and I hope Netflix is the one to continue the films if they can do it right. Plus, we all know Kayako can go where ever she damn well pleases onces she is hooked onto someone lol there was no reason why she couldn't be in Japan hunting Karen and in the US hunting....these people...lol I think it's cus they basically say in Grudge 2...bish been unleashed cus Allison went back to America.
Honestly I feel this was a grudge movie....remember in the last second and third movie they tell you that the curse can be transfered and they become the spirit of the grudge. Like how the sister of the character from the first movie takes the place of Kyoko, and Kyoko's sister also because a spirit of a grudge. This is basically another chapter with characters from the same time line
The trailer was the best part of this movie😅 I went in with low expectations and I was right, I went with 5 other people to see this and 4/6 of us didn’t like it and one liked and it and the other one thought it was fine. Such a sad way to start the new year!
I feel like this is a case of disappointed but not surprised. I wanted it to be good since Sam Raimi was attached to it, but I’m not really shocked that another Grudge movie wasn’t good.
I believe that the reason why Kayako wasn’t at the American house is because her curse was bound to the house she was murdered in. It wasn’t until the second one where Aubrey relives the way Kayako died where she was free to spread the curse and Aubrey took her place in the attic of the house. That is also why Toshio was the only one in the apartment haunting Alison. The detective was drowned in the bathtub in the first grudge so toshio was free. So I would say that as soon as someone dies in the haunted house then the spirit from the murder before is free
I wasn't excited for this at all. It looked terrible to me. No, I have yet to see Ju-On, but 2004 The Grudge has a special place in my heart: one of my fave actresses, and it was one of the first movie my dad & I saw in the theater for my birthday. Anyways, thanks for suffering through this movie so I didn't have to.
The grudge curse can be created by the grudge ghost killing someone. Or a Liv person killing someone horrible. Like in the first movie. I can't spell her name, the first ghost. She actually made another ghost, and left the house she was killed in. Also the ghost can mess with family, that has contact with the originally cursed. This way the movies can go on forever.
I liked the new Grudge because I’m a big fan of anthology type movies (which it really felt like). Otherwise I was disappointed in the first few minutes realizing that the movie wasn’t gonna be set in Japan. For that it really didn’t feel like the Grudge but more like a good anthology movie with the stories all relating to the house.
I love the Grudge... Ju On and the 2004 versions and actually all the bad ones too. The premise is very cool to me and I even had fun with installments that did objectively suck (Kayako vs Sadako: Ju On vs. Ringu). Like you said here though... this wasn't a Grudge movie. It was the one thing that no other installment has been: boring. I can forgive a lot of stupid crap in horror, but boring is unforgivable in this genre.
I'd be curious as to if you've seen the original Japanese version of The Grudge & your thoughts on it. I've only seen the 2004 remake & 2006 sequel. There's a third installment of The Grudge trilogy. Not sure when it was released. Finding your channel insightful & enjoyable.
I liked it too because I like how it jumped from present to past with different characters so we got to see that there wasn’t only one victim or family. The ending caught me by surprise though. But I agree that there should’ve been more horror and not so much jump scared
I liked it too. Didn’t really have any issues with it, except for the fact that it didn’t have Kayako and Toshio. To me, they gave the “Evil Dead treatment” to the Grudge
