The GRUESOME Exorcism of Michael Taylor - Did the Devil Make Him Do It?

Well, I Never

Michael Taylor wasn't a particularly religious man. He lived in the small village of Ossett in Yorkshire, England with his wife, dog and 5 children. While he was liked by his neighbours they noticed he would experience bouts of depression, likely driven by a debilitating back injury.
A friend thought turning to God would help and recommended an avant-garde new church group who espoused faith healing and exorcisms amongst other things.
This path would lead to an unforeseen and deadly outcome. However, did the devil make him do it?

This was a horrible, horrible case, partly because it might have been prevented if Michael Taylor had gotten appropriate mental health care for his depression and never met that awful cult. Religion is a great comfort to many, but it's also one of the most destructive forces when misused

While I agree completely, I also think they could have just _started_ with exorcising "murder" and "insanity," and sent him home with, I dunno, the demons of being lazy and eating too much or something, which might be the part of this case that has always infuriated me the most. They sent a _clearly_ mentally unstable man home with the promise that they'd remove murder and insanity _later?!_ And only ONE person thought to point out that might not be smart?! What a relief that Christine (as I understand it) had sent the kids away

My faith in Jesus does help my depression but God also gives wisdom to seek professional help. This cult was already run by the enemy (Satan). It probably led to full blown crazy or possible possession. Sad when people fall into the trap of false teachers. Praying that all will come to know God through the one and only way, His Son, Yeshua (Jesus).

I have a pretty strong stomach for stuff like this but this one made me uneasy. Those cult members took advantage of a clearly sick man and took no notice to a woman’s plea for help. Instead of getting him the help he needed they exacerbated his delusions. They are just as guilty as he was of this murder.
@celeste.cutz2020
@celeste.cutz2020 9 месяцев назад
I am actually starting mortuary school in January, I also do not have a weak stomach either, but there is something about knowing what a human did to the deceased in real time, than the aftermath of it. Most deaths, at least where I live in northern Kentucky is car accidents. I have seen bodies that have been in the summer heat for many days. The natural decomposition is not for the faint of heart, but that’s the natural order of life. When you see homicidal violence that makes you feel awful.
@moustachemoe
@moustachemoe 9 месяцев назад
@@celeste.cutz2020 I think decay and the fact that it is natural is kind of beautiful. I was interested in mortuary school actually and it’s super cool that you are doing it. I also thought about being a forensic scientist because of my love of true crime and puzzle solving. BUT the first time I came across a child I would crumble and I think I would lose sleep for weeks after a particularly gruesome murder so I decided that maybe that wasn’t for me.

I usually agree with light sentences when dealing with insanity, but not with this case. I have 2 points. 1, 4 years of treatment for the horrors that he committed would be not sufficient to make him not a danger to society. 2, I personally think that he wasn't insane, as he never showed any symptoms of psychosis before he joined the religious group. He had depression and that isn't always psychosis. His was depressed because of his chronic pain. I think he just wanted to get rid of his wife. I mean, if he was possessed by evil, why would he want to kill his wife whom he thought was also evil? He also said he was relieved after the murder. He was telling the truth this time. It's funny that when he was released, there were no reports of him relapsing and subsequent hospitalizations? There is no cure for psychosis and even with medication, there are always relapses. Just thinking?
@mackenziedesire7515
@mackenziedesire7515 10 месяцев назад
That's fair, but there is plenty of evidence of people have psychotic breaks and heaps of evidence for how incredibly susceptible the human mind is to cults and their subsequent mind-warping nature. Personally, I do think he had some sort of psychotic break, though I do agree that 4 years of treatment probably weren't a big help. I've heard about this case before this video, and I believe he actually tried to commit suicide several times following his release/prior to the incident mentioned in this video. As for there being no reports of him relapsing/etc., he changed his name at some point so it's possible there have been and we simply do not know.

I agree. He only flipped out when he was accused of having an affair with Marie, the (21-year-old!) cult leader. Based on the amount of time they were spending together; I'd say the accusation was warranted. When his wife's accusation put a stop to the affair, he was enraged and decided she had to go. I would be interested to know if he and Marie kept in touch after the trial. Her nonsense about being the "demon's target" and only saving herself through saying the magic words was pure deflection. If it wasn't for Marie, Christine (and the dog) wouldn't have been killed. Today, in cases of violent offenders being deemed not guilty on grounds of mental illness, the judges don't decide how long the offender spends in hospital. They are held indefinitely, and only ever released if the treating doctors are confident that they won't be a risk. I wonder if this case led to those changes.

While I'm an atheist too, and think the actions of the cult and priests absolutely encouraged, fed into, and actively pushed him further into his delusional state, it wasn't religion or the cult alone that made him do this. Not that this was the cause of the whole incident, but there is no way Marie could have sufficiently led any group of people let alone a religious group at the tender age of 21. People don't have enough life experience by that age (even in earlier decades where people seemingly "grew up quicker") to deal with any kind of problem that emerges in a group setting.

"Charismatic leaders" don't need any qualifications, other than the gullibility of their congregation. Not only was she leading the group, she was seducing the new members. It's called "root and recruit". It was only after they were called out for carrying on their affair that either of them started talking about "demons". It's probably just a coincidence that the "demon" targeted their exposer.

His most vivid memory was his first night as an 18-year-old patrolman, responding to one of the Jack the Ripper murders. If someone has several demons, you cannot let them go. They are a danger to themselves and others. If one is still there, several others will soon arrive to replace the others. They must be removed and the entryway shut through fasting, prayer and sealing it off forever. If you are performing the exorcism, you have to be spiritually strong and purify yourself first, before even attempting it. Also, you have to know exactly what to do.

Poor Christine! What a brutal and painful way to die! It must have been horrible for her knowing that her own husband was murdering her. I wonder what happened to their 5 children. They lost a mother and a father that night. I'm sure it was impossible for the children to have a relationship with the man who killed their mother. :(

Thank you especially for this one, Paul. I forget sometimes that we here in the US don't have exclusive rights to brutal and tragic killings. My Mum and Dad are from Brighouse and Barnsley, respectively. They never really spoke of anything about any religion that they might have been exposed to in their youth, but later in life, Dad did join, with some fervency, the Episcopalian church here in America. It definitely changed him and I can't say that they were all positive changes. Keep up the great work. Cheers!

Episcopalian is Anglican/CofE which is most likely what would have been familiar to them growing up, though non conformism was popular in the industrial heartlands like West and South Yorkshire. Didn’t know there was any fervency in the Church of England to be honest, it’s more tea, cake and flower rotas. Very benign as religions go in modern times. I am shocked a CofE and Methodist minister were involved in this. Very bizarre.

Excellent point about the dog. The Old Testament has a lot to answer for in encouraging a mindset where humanity doesn't even consider the rights of our fellow creatures , but teaches us instead that animals were only created for the use of human beings.

The same amount of desperation one feels apart from religion re-appears in religion, often enough. I have seen this first hand. In my opinion, it's very important that anyone who enters a faith system still attend to their psychological state, from a more secular perspective. This has been crucial for me in my faith.

It's a shame that he and the church couldn't come to some kind of 'delusional overlap' in their selective distorted perceptions/beliefs. But if you teach somebody to believe in the fantastical and unseen, and encourage the speaking of gibberish publicly and passionately as a gift of divine insight, the narcissists and schizos will come--and find it immensely validating and motivational. Also makes a convenient justification/defence later.
