This is how true crime should be done: From a historical perspective, long after anyone directly affected has passed. Without taking that time, true crime is just exploitation - turning a horrific event into entertainment, even as families could still be grieving.. Thank you, Well, I Never, for taking that time. This channel proves over and over that there are plenty of fascinating stories that can be told without crossing that line.

My great great grandfather (on my dads side) DC James Anderson was the detective who caught Amelia Dyer. When my grandparents passed away, my dad found the evidence (the parcel found in the river that you included at 30:27) in their attic - detectives could keep evidence back then - and took it to the Reading Police Museum. What’s also weird is that my mum’s great grandmother moved into Amelia Dyers house in Reading after her. Years later, my mum and dad met and ended up married.

Because there's no hero. No happy ending. Nothing to leave the audience feeling good. She wasn't even a serial killer. Hell she easnt even the murderer. Everyone dies. No real reason. No sacrifice. Without the forensic science that we have and the world being huge without the internet, people could commit a murder and move to another town or take a boat somewhere and that was the end of that case. Also you’re right, with laws like a servant killing their employer being the worst thing in the world, social standing was everything. Now it is just money not social standing, but it amounts to the same thing maybe.

The principle of equality under the law started in the British legal system & was carried around some of the world. There are always outliers but when the crown courts are investigated the results show that Judges follow the law without bias for/against class, race, religion etc when it comes to criminal courts. Some say that the world is at it's worst today, but looking back at history and it's vile events such as chronic plagues, famine and war where you were lucky to make it to 20- I'd say humanity has gotten better. The crimes were atrocious as well, and how they were handled is nothing short of a crime in itself. How in the hell did anyone deal with life sober back then? Probably why alcohol played a key role in humanity for centuries.

This channel came up as a suggestion after watching another favourite true crime storyteller of mine. Why wasn't this suggested earlier??? Absolutely brilliant!!! Whoever you are Mr. Narrator, you have got this down to perfection. The atmosphere, the studio (if I may call it that), the fascinating stories, and even your attire, make it eerily feel like you are actually reporting these horrific crimes from the times they took place. A sort of "News At Ten" from the past. And the added illustrations and "live scene" shots complement the story telling. I have many hours of your content to look forward to, and so has my daughter, who I know will enjoy all your hard work. Say hello to a new subscriber, thank you 👍

With the current trend for a return to some imaginary, rose tinted glorious past people need to take note of the reality of the past. While I studied for my History degree a fellow student and myself used one of our holidays to do some research into a subject we'd both run across in other academic modules. We looked into the instances of women taking their own lives due to finding themselves destitute, pregnant or generally crushed by the harsh and cruel attitudes of those who handled the levers of power in the class ridden Victorian society. We concluded that those who dwell on a return, for instance, to a society governed by such values are deluding themselves with their highly selective view of the past. Thank you for another fabulous piece of work Paul. I do hope you excellent videos help to educate and inform people who haven't been exposed to the harsher realities of our country.

Where people usually focus on the perpetrators, I find your channel refreshing in the amount of attention given to the victims. These are the people who were often just going about their lives in general anonymity, but who may have meant the world to their loved ones. Acknowledging them, even for the briefest moment, so many years later seems like honouring not only them, but every single man and woman who lived a decent life, never made it into the history books, but contributed in some very minute way to keep mankind around for as long as it has. People like most of us, basically, who will be forgotten, but in their cases were not even allowed to live out their lives in peace. By giving the victims a face and background, the true tragedy becomes a lot clearer. Thank you for making your narrations so personal.

you have a very good narration voice, and i love how you deliver the information. Victorian crime is always interesting, especially when the coppers track down the criminals, and how they figure it out with the limited science they had.

I believe that you and Mr. Ballen are the best story tellers I have ever listened to here on the internet. Thank you for sharing with us and you have a new subscriber.

A stellar job again, with entrancing narration! Thank you from across the pond for busting myths surrounding HH Holmes. He wasn't a serial killer. He killed those who were inconvenient to him or could make him some money. The "Murder Castle" was newspaper sensationalism, which unfortunately continues to be believed today.

Does that make him a mass murderer then?

He was definitely a serial killer. "Serial killers murder three or more victims, but each victim is killed on separate occasions. Unlike mass murderers and spree killers, serial killers usually select their victims, have cooling-off periods between murders, and plan their crimes carefully"

Am I sick for laughing at several parts of the first story, about 'Katherine'? I mean it's one absurdity after another. I think my favorite was the bit about the head displayed on a pike, like "Anybody missing a head?" 🤣
