The band before they found their identity. Its always interesting to see how different time periods had a very distinct presence. This was a GREAT era for music, but everything about this clip - the feel, the hair, outfits, even the dancers - screams of how the industry will take a successful formula and beat every last ounce of life out of it.
they found their new identity a year prior when Cummings replaced Chad Allen and released "It's time" in 1966 .. you're talking about their 3rd phase with "these eyes" ect... and then they had a 4th evolution with Randy Bachman leaving..then a 5th Evolution when the guitarist from Mandala joined. Then they went back to 2nd and 3rd generation in 1983 with the reunion tour.
Whatever the first song was the one of the goofiest I heard. Hey Good Hardy, pretty good. Love the groovy dancers. They remind me of how silly we were back then and thought we were so cool. Great video quality.
Priceless relics! Definitely betrays a Beatlish influence, which is no bad thing. The songs might seem a little goofy compared to their better known material but it shows their roots and is an interesting snapshot of the times.
As one of the swirling dancers in the background ,all I can say is this was the Guess who of the time period ,they had an aura of great things to come and definitely broke from the earlier CBC Winnipeg Teen music show ,This thanks to the CBC was the pivot point of who the band was to be. Love the 60s loved the band ,went straight to the Coca Cola distributes in Oshawa and got a couple of copies of the special release disc and collected each vinyle release they put out. Would love to know how this video was obtained ,I did so many things at CBC and would love to try and access them. Love it or hate it ,Music history, rock on.
It's been quite a few years now since I transferred this recording from a VHS tape but from what I remember it had belonged to a man that worked in the television news industry and was downsizing his possessions to prepare for a move.
@@daktarioskarvannederhosen2568 There could well be a copy in the archives of the CBC, or private copies in the hands of the talent on the show but a person never knows. Hopefully there's more than just the copy I saved!
the tracks from A wild Pair and the two recorded in England are just fantastic "lost" guess who tracks. Sure, derivative maybe, but great! This video is a blast, what a nice surprise. Please, all archivists, keep looking for more! Cheers
This is like a cross between the Rutles and Spinal Tap! The story is that when the Guess Who were working on the "Wild Pair" album, most of the Toronto studio brass and string players who were hired for the session were quite condescending towards the young rockers. The only one who was encouraging and helpful to them was Hagood Hardy, so they wrote this song for him, even though they got the spelling slightly wrong. Hardy became very big in the 70s as a composer and orchestra leader.
There was the road band, then the "Shakin All Over" band, then the "Let's Go" band, then this Coca Cola promo band and then a few months later they went into the studio to record "Wheatfield Soul" and they became THE GUESS WHO to the world at large. And I Love every version of this band!
I love the way Cummings is over enunciating his words on heygood hardy, as to dismiss a very apparent lip synch. got to say though, these 2 songs are great melody's.
A skinny Randy Bachman playing a Mosrite. This is probably the same guitar he later would trade for a '59 Les Paul with a Bigsby vibrato on it, which he would play on many Guess Who and BTO tracks.
hahaha...I know exactly what you're talkin about my friend. All I can see is Nigel and David singing in my head as soon as I see these outfits and stage dancers.
THE GUESS WHO RENTED MY PARENTS LITTLE HOUSE IN 1972 IN FORT GARRY, MB. I REMEMBER ONE OF THE BAND WAS RIDING A BULTACAL DIRT BIKE OUT IN THE FRONT OF THE LITTLE HOUSE, WHICH WAS 12OX 70 AT 1:30 IN THE MORNING. MY DAD, WHOM WAS AND STILL IS A SOLID FELLO, JUST WARND BURTON TO KEEP HIS GUYS IN CHECK OR THEY WOULD HAVE TO LEAVE. BURTON COMPLIED AND THEY STAYED FOR ANOTHER 6 MONTHS I BELEIVE; I THINK I MET BURTON C, BUT I WAS JUST 7 OR 8 YRS OLD BACK THEN.
The beginning of the most iconic Canadian band. The current BOGUS Guess Who band should watch this and accept that hard work, talent, and musicianship pays off. You don't earn a name or reputation by trying to imitate or deceive people into believing that you are the guys that did the hard work, or have the talent, and musicianship. Long live Randy and Burton.
a little Herman's Hermits, Dave Clark 5 the British Invasion had a strong influence and it's funny how they were influenced mostly by American music. We got to see these guys in Geenwood Nova Scotia just before they took off with there own series of terrific songs and hits
They sounded a little like Spanky and Our Gang at the start. The guitar freakout at the end was nice. Go-go girls nice too. 1960s were very unique culture and art wise.
Dig the alternate mixes of Mr. Nothing and Haygoode Hardy. Quite a few differences compared to the "Wild Pair" mixes. This is super cool and super rare!!!!
"The Roast Beef," AKA Greg Leskiw, joined along with Kurt Winter, when Bachman (who's in this clip from '68) left in 1970, then Greg left himself in '72 to be replaced by Don McDougall.
Too bad they were lip-synching. Would’ve been awesome to see them play this live. It’s 2024 now I was born in 1964. I was just a boy when it came out. I used to play hey, good Hardy at the Syracuse lacrosse games, back when had Tom Hardy on the team. He used to kick butt we had a good season that year.
1:50 Burton Cummings morphs into Ringo Starr for a minute, and his nose 👃 grows 🤥. Also his guitar strap breaks off between songs, and he has to hold it up when playing.
@@peggirl152 I heard that Randy Bachman made Burton Cummings learn to play other instruments, besides piano, because of bands like Traffic, were becoming popular. I was unaware of that.
Ha ha! This was just one of the 2,091,786 things that made the sixties so interesting, And by "interesting" I mean (among other things) "weird". Not necessarily bad, but definitely different.

this is not from 1966 idiot. Stop proclaiming useless and wrong facts. Cool clip but this has to be one of the worst Guess WHo tracks of ALL TIME. hate that new vaudiville band sound. Just makes the skin fucking crawl. Randy looks rediculous hitting that fake little hammer.
@@SherryConnelly you're here 11 years later... this is and always will be a terrible song - the first one .. the 2nd not bad but a realliy silly topic about Hagood Hardy ..who also worked and recorded for the CBC - and the whole Sgt Pepper outfits makes me completely puke even harder in 2024. Guess Who is one of my favorite bands.. but I don't like this made for TV crap - you may not have known but these songs were made to sell Coca Cola ..so it's just marketing nonsense - FYI these songs were found only on the Staccatos / Guess Who album called 'wild pair" .. the link being Coca Cola sales you send in the cap top and you get the album. The one good thing about that album , there is no Coca Cola jingle found on it.
Ah yes it's Sgt Leper's Baloney Farts Club Band!!Ha,it's a nice enough song but the jump from this to American Woman is palpable lol.Erm are those hip and groovy girls and guys frugging or having epileptic seizures? It looks unnatural lol.
