Another fun fact about Rodrigo: although he's one of the most famous guitar composers in history, and is credited with popularizing the guitar concerto as a genre, he barely played the guitar at all. When he showed his solo guitar pieces to people, he played them on the piano rather than the guitar.
@stevenklimecky4918

Yep - probably the most famous guitar concerto of all time. And the main theme of the middle movement surely one of the most beautiful melodies of all time, transforming the pain of grief and loss into something that blesses and comforts us all in time of need for human connection.

A nice reaction. A masterpiece made by a blind man. This was written in braille code, this piece of art embraces a sad composer's personal history.

Great job in listening to one of the most famous pieces for guitar and orchestra. Pablo Sánz is the soloist the guy playing the guitar. Thank you for putting in the link for the original video, because in classical music it's important to also know who the conductor was and which orchestra.

The setting is the famous Concertgebouw ("Concert Building") in Amsterdam, revered as one of the world's best concert halls for its acoustics (traditionally alongside the Vienna Großer Musikvereinssaal and Boston Symphony Hall), and home of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, among others (though this performance is with the less well-known South Netherlands Philharmonic).

Got to hear Craig Ogden play the 2nd movement at the Royal Albert Hall about 15 years ago. If you're looking for more classical guitar, I'd recommend looking for the late great Julian Bream. He was one of the greatest masters of the instrument.

This is arguably the most famous bit of the classical guitar repertoire and rightly so, mostly for the second movement. Your assessment was quite correct, about the concerto telling a story. The second movement is Rodrigo telling you a story about the miscarriage of his child, the disbelief, anger, pain and realization. You can hear gim go through all of these stages of grief here. Common theme in classical music is a lack of spanish names. So it was only time you got to know Joaquin Rodrigo. Fun Fact: Some composers are obviously famous for being deaf, Rodrigo was blind.
@SofiAmadeus
@SofiAmadeus Год назад
Also the constant chord of the guitar in the 2nd movement is describing the sound of the fading heartbeat of the child. Also, about being blind, so far there are 3 famous composers who are blind. Rodrigo, bach, and handel.
@Quotenwagnerianer
@Quotenwagnerianer Год назад
@@SofiAmadeus I'm sorry but your example of blind composers is just wrong. Bach and Handel suffered from cataract, like many older people do, as the lense in the eye gets cloudy. That doesn't make them blind composers. It only became a probem in their final years. (The historical irony is that they both turned to the same quack named John Taylor to have their lenses cleared. Bach died from complications/infection caused by his unsterile operating instruments and the "bright" idea to use pigeon blood as a cleansing agent and Handel totally lost all eyesight. But he wasn't composing at that time any longer anyway.) Rodrigo was blind from the age of 4, as a complication from a diphteria infection. Another famous composer who was blind from birth was Louis Vierne.
@SofiAmadeus
@SofiAmadeus Год назад
@@Quotenwagnerianer didn't they turn blind first for months before actually dying? I would consider that as being blind. Although I do understand that saying it that way might mislead people into thinking that they're blind most of their life.
@Quotenwagnerianer
@Quotenwagnerianer Год назад
@@SofiAmadeus Handel did, as a result of the surgery. Maybe it's matter of definition. Blind does not necesarilly mean that you are unable to see anything at all, just like deaf does not mean that you don't hear a thing. They were both impaired enough that they turned to a "doctor" to fix it. Too bad the guy was a fraud.

Absolutely wonderful piece of music, treated by with the reverence it deserves. You spoke about it telling a story and that's so true, the second (slow) movement being Rodrigo's tribute to his son, who died in infancy. Truly beautiful. I'd recommend Rodrigo's 'Conciert de Madrigal," if you want to try something else by him.

the guitar became a forefront instrument in the last century because of use of lighter woods,,modern veneer devlopments in finishing varnishes,,they project sound much better,the strings retain proper tuning in humid dry warm hot conditions,nylon strings hold tone better,, one thing you can do to get longer life out of strings is to use windex and a clean rag to run along the strings,cleaning oils and dirt off them restores crisp sound,rub till they squeal like violin stings bowed

That is a viola made by David Rivinus. There's a video on RU-vid (with his name misspelled as Ravinus) of him talking about it - it's named "David Ravinus explains Pellegrina Ergonomic Viola". Quick suggestion, if you get a chance to listen to the late Paco de Lucia rendition of Concierto de Aranjuez, it will easily have you change your mind as to which version trumps; in my humble opinion, he is a Spanish flamenco guitarist with few if any equals, with all due respect in advance to the late Andres Segovia.

Although Paco's effort was fair and enjoyable is not even close, this is not flamenco and even the flamenco guitar itself differs from a classical guitar. I'd recommend many other versions before Paco de Lucía's

If you'd like to hear a different rendering of part of this concert with a different instrument try: "Carlos Nuñez Concierto de Aranjuez". Live. Carlos is a gifted player of the "Galician Gaita", a kind of bagpipe played in North-West Spain. While the sound is different from the guitar's, he does play a section of the Concierto de Aranjuez magnificently.

@@mattbalfe2983 Americans overrating jazz music, typical... Miles Davis don't even hold a candle to Scott Joplin, Gershwin, Charles Ives... let alone true composers like all these classical ones, who has to harmonize 80 instruments and be original and interesting at the same time. Now think better, what melody made up Miles Davis remotely close to the immortal one of the adagio movement in Concierto de Aranjuez, what one? And for the record, I love Davis music, at least until the 60s when he thought he could be also a hippie and ended in the 80s wearing clothes like my mother and making that horrendous funk-fusion crap nobody cares, because sounds like a monkey farting
