Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Brewster's Millions Of Rants with The Guitarists Of Steely Dan. I've had a number of requests to feature more of Steely Dan's music, and aside from a well-received Chordplay episode from a few years ago, not to mention Soloing Secrets and Three-For-All lessons surrounding Larry Carlton, this is the first time we've taken a deep-dive look at the excellent guitarists that have worked with this band over the years - so lets dive in!
The players under the microscope in this lesson include legends such as Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Elliott Randall, Dean Parks, and the essential Larry Carlton. Once you dive into this lesson, you'll see we're targeting a tasty idea from each player, in addition to some priceless words of musical wisdom from Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, a slick bluesy bonus lick from Larry Carlton at the end, and much more!
Needless to say, if you're a Steely Dan fan, a fan of the great guitarists that have worked with this group over the years, a player looking to add some jazzy ideas to their playing, or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

It all started with Denny Diaz. His electric sitar solo on Do It Again is a jazz/blues masterpiece.

Denny Dias and Jay Graydon’s contributions were also amazing. I can’t fathom getting that advanced 😢

Jay Graydon did the Peg solo. That thing is a marvel! Also, was it Skunk Baxter on Rikki don’t lose that number? That solo is a masterclass in double stops and so melodic. Those would be my requests for the next two!

This is killer! These guys + Beck+Holdsworth are just the most killer fusion players ever. So many new chords and scales to learn from these guys. Just the best at playing over chord changes

For the first three albums SD was an actual band. Skunk and Denny were founding members. B&F joined Dias' band.

"Skunk" summed it up. Like Tommy Tedesco said, simply, "Learn all you can, and then forget it".

I always equated playing for the Dan like playing for Zappa. All the musicians were the best of the best!

Larry Carlton's first solo album is an absolute gem with the great Jeff Porcaro on drums, what a groove.

Years ago I played at a benefit for an animal charity and we went on right before Larry Carlton. No band, he just showed up with tracks, including Kid Charlemagne and other Steely Dan tunes he played on, and told amazing stories about the sessions.

For soloing Steely Dan are the tops ! There are so many amazing guitar solos throughout their music. I tend to prefer their earlier albums . One of my all-time favourite solos is Jeff Baxter's solo on 'The Boston Rag' !

Very nice. That Dean Parks lick is SUPER tasty! I'm definitely stealing that one. Huge Steely Dan/Donald Fagen fan. Probably my favorite Steely Dan lead guitar work is everything in Third World Man. Then on the solo Fagen stuff, some of Jon Herington's lead work on Sunken Condos is great as well.

Love the show, but really wanted to know what Derringer did with SD.I was listening to him when I was playing att 11 yo, when he was with the Winters brothers.Ricks had some great blues albums over the year a semi smooth jazz interpretation of all his hits.Ricks solo from Back in the U.S.A. from the Edgar Winter/White Trash double live album is fantastic, also he has a instrumental called Rhapsody in Red that it just phenomenal

Rick i guess is on show biz kids, my rival, and chain lighting. He plays slide guitar on showbiz kids, and on my rival he’s credited along with hiram bullock for guitars, but neither of them do the solo on that song. I have no idea what rick does on chain lighting so i cant help ya there.

I’ll say this, Denny and Skunk were what I call “energy” players. Meaning played with a lot of fire and grit. Those that followed and there’s way to many to mention. Didn’t play with that energy. They were smoother and you could probably say were better. That’s up for debate. However, every guitar player for Steely Dan was a monster.
