Notes I used for this video:
Jeff Settings on JCM800:
Pre on 7
Bass 10
Mids 7
Treb 6
Master 1.5
Gain 10
On the album it states Slayer plays B.C. Rich Guitars. He was spotted playing a rich bitch, Warlock and a mockingbird in the 80's among others.
Jeff used 1986 Marshall Jcm800 2203
BOSS Rge-10 confirmed by Jeremy
On the heniken baffle amps they are reissue 2203 with Kt88 power tubes. He had multiple made, less than 20.
Before the Jackson he used Gibson Les Paul modified with a Kahler Pro tremolo and a Joe Barden Two/Tone Humbucker bridge pickup
King’s rig on Reign In Blood was (I think) Marshall 1960 4×12 cabinets.
Boss 10-Band EQ with the sliders set in an upside-down “V” shape,
King old JCM800 settings: Bass between 4-6, Mids around 8, Treble around 6-7, and Presence around 7. His preamp gain is set to 8-9 with his master
Kerry King signature amp settings:
Gate 3.5
Assault 4
Switch?
Treb 3.5
Master 4.2
Pre 7.3
Pres 4.7
Bass 5.6
Mid 5.4
Jackson wouldn’t give Jeff an endorsement so he spent $2000 on it. He only had one JACKSON!!
1980's Jackson soloist Jackson
Bought in 1988 for $2000 - it featured a 24 fret neck-thru design [maple neck with poplar wings], ebony fretboard, and a Kahler Model 2315 Flatmount Tremolo. The guitar originally came with passive pickups from Jackson’s shop [typically this would mean a J-50 and a J-80] and featured a mid-boost circuit. Soon after Hanneman got the guitar, he put EMG 81s in and removed the mid-boost circuit. He also changed the locking nut from a Kahler style to a Floyd Rose style sometime in the early 90s.
South of Heaven
They actually discussed slowing down
Jeff's last album when it came to writing every song. Kerry wasn't as involved and it's his least fav album.
Kerry King talking about his old JCM800 "the beast"
“That amp hasn’t been modified in any way, shape or form,” Bowcott says. “It’s completely stock. Component drift and tolerance deviations have made that amp something special and-as Kerry sometimes says-the ‘golden child’ when it comes to his trademark tone. Back in the Eighties, you couldn’t enforce the sort of tolerances that we demand from our suppliers today, which is plus or minus one percent. Back then, the plus-or-minus percentage was much higher. As a result, Kerry’s amp sounds different from a lot of other JCM800s made in the mid Eighties.” Originally supplied with a quartet of 6550 tubes, King’s Marshalls are beefed up with heavier duty KT88 tubes. “They have a nice, fat low end that Kerry loves,” Bowcott says. “Those tubes add a lot to his vibe and make his sound even bigger.”
While Marshall’s Slash and Zakk Wylde signature amps were essentially reissues of the original JCM 2555 Silver Jubilee and JCM800 2203 heads, respectively, the Marshall 2203KK JCM800 Kerry King head is a unique new product. “This is an exact duplicate of the Beast,” Bowcott says. “It’s a much more aggressive animal than our current 2203 reissue, which is based on the early Eighties circuit.”
“Part of the secret to the Slayer sound is what Kerry and Jeff do to the front end of their amps,” Bowcott says. “Kerry used his 10-band graphic EQ to push the front end of the amp harder. What’s interesting is that 99 percent of players out there think that you need to scoop the mids out to get Slayer’s guitar tone. Kerry does the exact opposite-he boosts the mids. A scoop is a smile,” he explains, referring to the shape of a scooped-mid EQ curve. “You can’t have a smile when you’re playing Slayer’s music! His EQ curve is a fairly radical frown, which makes more sense.”
This Marshall had his RGE-10, dialed in to the exact EQ curve that he uses.
• You can either add more or less of my tone,” adds King. “You can’t adjust all 10 EQ bands individually. My chunk comes from those boosted mids.”
Marshall Mode IV cabinets.
Gibson Explorer during the band's early days. Rich Bich model he bought off his bandmate Kerry King His first Bich, DiMarzio Super Distortion pickups. He also used a B.C. Rich Ironbird. B.C. Rich Gunslinger
In 2000, Hanneman switched to ESP guitars
• Kahler Pro bridges
• Dunlop .009-.042 Strings
• D'Addario .009-.042 Strings (earlier)
EffectsEdit
• Shure Wireless System
• Eventide H3000S Harmonizer
• Yamaha SPX-90 Effects Processor
• Rocktron Super C HUSH
• MXR Smart Gate
• BOSS RGE-10 (10 band EQ)

Slow Slayer is more evil. Hell awaits is a great example; the beginning of that song is slow and it’s diabolical. South of Heaven is a perfect album. No filler. Live Undead is probably my favorite song on there. The tempo changes, multiple riffs, and drum chaos is amazing.

My favorite Slayer songs are the slow and mid-tempo tracks(such as "Dead Skin Mask", "Seasons in the Abyss", "Divine Intervention", "Expendable Youth", "Beauty Through Disorder", etc. Those songs have a powerful darkness that the fast songs lack in my opinion.

i completely agree i am a huge fan of leaving space between notes and brooding atmosphere. i love the bangers etc but i also love a great build up. i mean its always fucking slayer lol. and this guy is right they used to go into the writing process with ideas then rehearse the shit out of those ideas and build on them, and then record the album. so in this new era of recording its fucking crap. when i last recorded shit i recorded on a fostex 4 track. it fucking sounded awesome i thought i was james hetfield lol. alas i turned out to be a skilled slave. anyway i digress.the thing was to catch the magic of the people together and not just the parts that make up a song.

@@CIRCLEOFTONE There's not a ton of info about what exactly was used on that album in detail. But from what research I was able to find in DOWN forums back in the day and from interviews with Guitar Magazines was that Pepper Keenan and Kirk Weinstein both used their respective live rigs from their own bands, plus a few Marshalls and other miscellaneous amps that Phil Anselmo had in New Orleans. Pepper Keenan was primarily using Gibson SGs and a Les Paul with P90s into Mesa Boogie .50 cal+ and a Marshall cab. Kirk was using Explorers with a boss metal zone as a boost into solid state Randall's. I'm not entirely sure what Marshalls were used or what any of the other amps used for layering were.

I always liked South of Heaven, the slowing down made their music sound a lot less two-dimensional to my ears. Most notably were Araya's vocals and Lombardo's drums. Obviously, if you're not going a million miles an hour all the time it opens things up to be a bit more musical and melodic as well. It may not be that popular but a recreation I'd like to see/hear is Static Age era Misfits. For an album that likely cost about two-bob to make I still think it sounds fantastic.

Too true about metal/rock becoming too nice. What happened to the bad ass lead guitarist of the '70's. How many times have I read in comments sections people slagging off EVH calling him an asshole thanks to Hagar's constant bitching. Or Ace Frehly being drunk, unreliable etc thanks to Gene bitching that band members aren't as reliable and professional and nice and polite ike his accountants. Usually I leave a comment saying something like that's the way I like my rockstar lead guitarists drunk and badass then I cop abuse. South of Heaven is my favourite album of all time. And you're absolutely right about the way all new (and older) bands sound the same these days. I've even lost interest in some of my favourite bands' new recordings, because it all sound so clynical... Crowbar's the main example, I love their music but their new releases all sound artificial in the same way. I hope rock and metal artists will get more analog again, just to get some more rawness and playfulness back into the game.

You can record using a DAW and do it the old way, just don't use a click track. I agree with you about this, all the records today sound like pop metal due to the high quality in recording. The problem is growing up listening to crappy albums back in the 80's we all wanted them to sound better. But now I love them even more because they are a time capsule that cannot be reproduced with perfect production.
@fromthedoor22

I really enjoyed the points you made. There is just something different about music that comes from a bunch of musicians actually playing in the same room, at the same time, hashing things out, jamming, etc. Feeding off the feeling of the rhythm and or what the drummer is specifically doing for an example. I think it makes for what I would call, more "inspired" music. For another example...Its amazing how if one player is doing a specific thing, it can instantly cause you to look at a riff differently and possibly change it in a way that makes it better. Anyways, thats my rant. Great video. Edit: Another example. Now a days when metal bands don't have a drummer and they use electronic drums ( Not sure if thats the right term but I think you know what I mean...computer generated maybe? ) The feel and the groove is almost instantly lost for me. The backbone is just simply gone. No computer generated drum track can match the feeling of a Bill Ward, or a John Bonham or any living, breathing drummer who has a specific style and subtleties and nuances to their playing.

Slow Slayer is great it's true and Dave's drum fills are unstoppable on the title track South of Heaven, but is it not a tiny bit contrarian to say it's better? Angel of Death, War Ensemble, Raining Blood - There is an endless trail of high speed adrenalin songs. The drum fill Dave does in War Ensemble when everything cuts out apart from his drums is absolutely mental - A shivers down the spine moment! I love the slow ones too, but I got into Slayer for the fast ones! They needed to slow down eventually but... Apologies. I just love Reign In Blood so much!

I completely agree that the overpolish of metal these days has really hurt the genre. When I listen to some current, and very good, bands I feel like they often sound too perfect and it leads to a feeling like something is missing. Then to make it worse you go see them live and it can be a major disappointment Then you play Pantera, by far the tightest live band I have ever seen, and when you listen closely to their albums you hear these slight imperfections that let you know someone was actually playing the instruments and I think subconsciously that helps you connect more to the music.

Agreed South of Heaven and the first 2 albums are better than Reign(which is still one of the greatest metal albums ever) but when they slowed down they revealed their dark magic. Listen too At Dawn threy Sleep. The breakdown is epic.

Nice to see ya back at it! Always look forward to you content, just wish you finally clone yourself a few times so we could get more! Congrats of getting into better shape! That's not easy in our age group.....I'll try to take some inspiration from that. I have a little one too, won't be able to legally have a drink with until the mid 60s so it's time to get after some better health on my end too. I play a lot of acoustic for the baby, he crys of I play semi loud electric. Please do a video on heavy acoustic riffs, I need to sneak some good tone into his brain.....apples and bananas isn't going to cut it haha

Yeah getting into shape after I hit 50 is hard. Gains can be gone with three days of eating bad. Boring lifestyle but has to be done.

That's pretty funny as it DOES look like one of those stylistically. It's an Evil Dead II shirt.

Seasons and SOH are far and away the best compositional albums in Slayers catalog.

if possible can you do a video on the tones of death consciousness by have a nice life that has some of the best bass and guitar tones i’ve ever heard it’s a little tricky considering there isnt much info on the album but with the way you research this shit i think you got it.

Met Kerry king at a guitar clinic. He wasn’t anywhere near the bellend people make him out to be. He was very giving of advice and helping folk learn slayer songs. He just has a bit of an arrogance wall about himself.

Yes,yes and damn yes.Grew up as a teen in the Thrash era and remember well the disappointment of many over the slow down in pace from Reign in Blood compared to South of Heaven. The slower mid pace riffs of S.O.H lets the heaviness breath and accentuates the eery atmosphere. To many bands get caught up in blasting through their tracks and it sounds a mess.Hanneman's best work and my favourite Slayer album.😈

If Tom sang aggressively like the previous albums, it would be a masterpiece! The riffs are great but the vocals hold it back.

For someone so knowledgeable about such iconic albums, its totally insane how wrong you get the spill the blood riff!! It was like fingers nails down a black board to me😉

I’m pretty positive Jeff used a Bill Lawrence L-90 in his Les Paul. I know pickup wise they both used DiMarzio Super Distortions as well as Bill Lawrence L-500’s in their BC Rich guitars. Kerry also used a DiMarzio Megadrive in the bridge shortly before he switched to EMGs for the remainder of Slayer’s career.

Great info. Do you have any quotes etc re the pickups? I can add it to the description.

@Circle Of Tone Here’s a photo of Kerry with a Warlock loaded with Bill Lawrence L-500’s, you can tell by the chrome housings around the coils and the blade polepieces: i.pinimg.com/474x/28/e1/fa/28e1fae58a3fcbb3c3c9644541f2034a--death-metal-metalhead.jpg

@Circle of Tone And here’s an awesome photo of Kerry with a badass red crackle double neck V, you get a clear view of the pickups and all 4 of them are Megadrives: m.psecn.photoshelter.com/img-get/I0000Rs5nm73z210/s/700/700/Slayer-200988-GCS-2903.jpg As far as I know that was the only pickup with one row of hex poles combined with a wide rail polepiece on the market at that time.

@Circle of Tone One more. Here’s a clearer pick of Kerry with the L-500 loaded Warlock: i.pinimg.com/originals/4d/da/9f/4dda9f9e2b13e9d567c7e3bbaa37a046.jpg

@Circle of Tone If you zoom in on this pic of Jeff’s LP you can see the distinct embossed logo on the bridge pickup’s cover: archive.nytimes.com/www.nytimes.com/news/the-lives-they-lived/2013/12/21/jeff-hanneman/ Definitely looks like a period correct L-90 to me: billlawrencereview.com/sites/default/files/images/storyimages/gallery/Bill%20Lawrence%20Pickups%20(3).jpg
