The Springfield M1A lives rent free in my heart. I love and don't love this rifle for a variety of reasons but ultimately you are getting a M-14 for around 1500 bucks and with some upgrades you have a pretty wonderful battle rifle. In today's video we delve in the M1A scout and take a hard look at this rifle through a series of tests, drills and practical applications. I hope you'll enjoy the journey as much as we did.
00:00 M1A amazing intro, goes hard feel free to screenshot
3:50 drills to test the M1A
7:09 M1A accuracy and long range testing
12:35 M1A in depth review

Now, yeah. Cause the trash units got junked. Issued M14s were a hot mess according to my father, who carried one and saw dozens of major problems in his battalion. The fact that it had to be 5 MOA rifle for deployment is NUTS. The Springfield built guns were a lot better QC than the rest, but nowadays the M14s that exist are much much nicer than the commonly issued rifles.

Watch the forgotten weapons video on it: when the gun was in service it was A. Pretty outdated / outclassed B. Had terrible manufacturing issues C. Was used in environments it wasn’t designed for The design itself for a marksman rifle is good, but that’s not what it was put into service for + all the other problems led to it having a negative reputation

We got issued surplus M-14sduring my time as a USMC JROTC cadet in high school. Learned how to take the thing apart and put it back together blindfolded. Our instructor was the last of the old breed; a salty Vietnam Vet Gunnery Sargent who had been teaching the course for years. Fast forward 15 years, and guess what i bought with my first big paycheck. The M1A is accurate as all get out with iron sights, and IMO one of the best looking rifles ever. I'll bring it to the range with my AR, and it gets all the comments! Still a looker!

I loved the M14, and when the military forced us to go to the M16, I went with the M60; now I am, using my M1A for competition in the CMP matches; I bought a rack grade rifle, yet had it made into an ultra-matched grade rifle by professional gunsmiths. This is my number 1 rifle for matches with iron sights out to 800 yards, if had to compete out to 1000 yards, using iron, I used my 1903A1 match grade or my M1 Garand match grade, in 30-06.

The first centerfire rifle I ever bought was an M1A Scout. I ordered it online and picked it up at a local shop. When I got there and checked out my rifle, it had a straight barrel. No muzzle brake. Turns out, I accidentally bought a NY legal model. Fast-forward to today and I still love it and am actually glad I got the "neutered" model. I was able to train around the lack of muzzle device, so the recoil is no issue, and it's quieter than the braked version. No real modifications beyond the Burris 7x32 scout scope. Definitely my favorite firearm in my safe.

@EthanDarke
@EthanDarke 4 дня назад
Possible dumb question; what's a muzzle brake?
@infinition
@infinition 4 дня назад
@EthanDarke Not at all. It's a device attached to the end of a barrel. Vents on it redirect gas upward, countering the muzzle rise. In simpler terms, it reduces felt recoil. It will also make the firearm louder and, if close to the ground, the vented gases will kick up dirt/dust.

The Norinco M305 was a Chinese-made M1a clone that was very popular in Canada for a while. We learned lots of tricks to accurizing them cheaply, including bedding the action. Of course out of the box they frequently had problems...often the barrels were out of true and the gas systems were mis-installed, but we quickly learned how to fix them up. Best thing was that they had very good quality forged receivers and as long as we could get USGI parts, esp. rear sight assemblies, they would really perform. But then they were banned by Order-in-Council [basically equel to your Executive Order in the US] that forced us all to lock our guns away...they were 'banned' but never removed from their owners' possession. Guard your 2nd Amendment-protected rights, Americans...they are a precious jewel that the rest of the world doesn't enjoy.

Also, for anyone out there, I just spent an hour trying to figure out this reload method. To be clear, the way Garand Thumb is showing us how to load it is correct but only when the bolt is closed** I tried doing this with the bolt open and it would not work for me. Instead, I had to do it the opposite way of how he did it. Back of the magazine inserted first, almost straight up on insertion with a minor tilt and then the mag release bar would straighten out as I inserted it and then I had to just use the base of my palm to push it up for 1 audible click to secure it in place. I tried it next with the bolt closed and it worked flawlessly and smoothly. 2 audible clicks, one with the front part of the magazine confirming it is in place and then rocking it back for the second click confirming it is fully in there. Hope this helps everyone trying to figure it out like me. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

The first gun I ever owned was a 22" inch barreled M1A. I never had any reliability issues whatsoever, and was able to usually get better grouping than shown here, though that may be due to having younger eyes at the time than mike has, and I doubt I could replicate it now. Broke my heart to sell it.

Competed with a M14 back in the90's on my NG unit's rifle team. (All accurized of course) Absolutely fell in love with the platform. Finally bought a scout model in 2013 (retirement gift to myself) and yep, was disappointed by the grouping. (Avg was 2.5" at 100 yards) Problem being is I compared the scout to the M14 I competed with. So, a 22" medium contour Krieger with 1:10 twist went in, had the stock bedded, my friend that built our unit's M14's smoothed out the trigger group, national match gas piston, national match Sadlak op rod spring guide, and a CASM 14 scope mount with a Athlon Midas TAC 5x25x50 glass. Handload 168gn ELD-M getting 2600 fps, groups on avg 1.25" at 100 yards. Mags have been slickcoated internally. Floating head target at 684 yards, no problem. (Until it gets warm then it will start stringing high. There's just no way around that.) If shtf and I can only take one rifle, fucking right I'm taking Vera. (Yeah, it's name is Vera.) It's the one rifle I know I can 100% count on no matter what. My AR's are great, especially my 6 ARC, but old Vera is the best.

I got an early scout and some people hate on the first run of the rifle. The newer builds have some minor changes that supposedly help accuracy. Standard 762 rounds (147gr) are ok at 50-60 yards and “acceptable” at 100 but at 200 or more those rounds are all over the place I’ll be the first to admit. Heavy rounds are way better and yield tighter groups on that rifle. Hit up AAC since they sponsor, the 168gr BTHPs are as on the money as it gets for the 18 inch barrel imo. Long time sub, and I watch every you guys do. Love you brother, keep the content coming 👍

Yeah, my experience is that Scouts are highly variable off the rack, with a propensity to print pumpkin-size groups at 50yrds with cheap ammo. But get them bedded, and make some modest improvements to the barrel and trigger and they can get around 1 MOA... with top shelf 168gr. 165-180gr just seem to be the sweet spot with.308s and.30-06.

This has been my favorite rifle for a very long time. Of course second to the Garand itself. Its such a great feeling rifle with little to no recoil with a great trigger. My grandpa has one of these (not issued through service) and a Garand from his service in Vietnam. Of course he also has his service issued AK, but you didnt hear me say that. Hoping to inherit the Garand and the M1a as ive cleaned and shot them numerous times.

On my M1A I find its best to use a scout scope on a fixed handguard rail. The scope mounts allow me to co-witness my iron sights and leave the breach open for clearing as well as stripper clip loading. 20 rounds in stripper clips may not be as easy to load as a fresh mag but they only take up about half the room and help tons with keeping your magazine topped off.

And IF there ever was to be a "Red Dawn (1983) Scenario", the original M14/M1A1 checks all the boxes for an excellent battle rifle, especially throughout the different types of terrain and environments of North America. You might would want to put a synthetic stock on one if you lived in the Extreme South East of the U.S. say Louisianna to FLorida and up to some parts of South Carolina just so the wood wont swell and contract and warp. because the M1 Garand is a weapon designed during the '20s for a '40s war, where all the major armies still had bolt action rifles as standard weapon for their infantry so american squads have quite an advantage in fire power. The M14 is an improved Garand yes but in a world where the AK, so an assault rifle light with a medium cartridge, was already a thing. So the M14 was already an old weapon when it came out

The standard M1A and a KSG were my late father's last gun purchases. He was a combat engineer in Vietnam, qualified expert with his M14 and absolutely hated the M16. He called it the Matty Mattel, and the absolute embodiment of fudd stereotype about polymer stuff. He actually unironically used the term 'black gun' about modern ARs. He held it, realized how light the stock was, and went "...Huh. Not bad." Still haven't been able to bring myself to take it out, but he taught me how to strip it then did it blindfolded just to prove he could, all those decades later.

@erikcrouch7881 - Thanks for the story about your dad and his aversion to the 'black rifle.' I have a somewhat similar story to share. I turned fourteen in 1975, the year the U.S. pulled out of Vietnam for good, so I didn't make that particular dust-up, but I know a handful of guys who are a bit older than I am - who did, and some of them were in combat as soldiers or Marines (and one Navy Corpsman). Well, one night almost twenty years ago, we were at the house of a friend whose son was returning from his deployment to Iraq as an 11B infantryman. Big party, BBQ, lots of food and people having a good time. This group of Vietnam veterans was standing around drinking beer, and I decided to ask them about their rifles, how did they feel about their M-14 or their M-16? Well, joke was on me, because I was not at all prepared for the firestorm of invective, foul language, insults and profanity that came out of those guy's mouths! To a man, they all hated the M-16, calling it "that poodle shooter," "the Mattel gun," and a "worthless POS" and so on down the line. If you have ever heard old grunts swear or let loose with some blue language, you know what I mean. Well, after I got done laughing, I asked about the M-14. To a man, they absolutely loved it. Had nothing but good things to say about it. Loved the .308 round, too, saying that it "turned cover into concealment," and that when an enemy soldier was hit with M80 ball, they "went down" and "stayed down"... The coda to the story is that the son walks by and we grab him and ask how he liked his rifle overseas, and he said his M-16 was fine, did what it was supposed to do and never let him down. Anyway, that's the whole story. I'll never forget the manner in which those old grunts reacted.

@@erikcrouch7881 - That's a good one! Smart officer/NCO, that one.... many guys from up there in the hills (well, back in the old days; can't say today) had to hunt if they wanted breakfast or dinner. Guys from that background tend to make good soldiers. Sgt. Darrell "Shifty" Powers of E. Co. 506PIR 101 A/B "Band of Brothers" fame, was from rural Virginia and was both the best scout and best shot in the company during WW2. Why? Because of his rural background, hunting, and spending so much time in the woods as a kid. The world-famous test pilot, the late General Chuck Yeager, hunted as a boy, up before daylight so his family could have something to eat. Same with Lt. Audie Murphy who came from a dirt-poor background in Texas. He was another one of those guys who had to hunt so his family wouldn't go hungry. When he applied for the Navy and Marine Corps, they rejected him as undernourished. The Army took a chance on him, and he became the most-decorated soldier of the war, including his Medal of Honor. Can't keep a good man down, that's what they say. Glad that ricochet didn't take out your dad. That's known as using up all of your good luck at one time! Young soldiers have been known to do crazy things once-in-a-while, though. Back when the M-1 Abrams came into use at Ft.Knox years ago, the kids driving them figured out that they could get some air under them by jumping them on this one little hill - that is if their NCO or officer wasn't watching! Nothing like seventy tons of MBT flying through the air, right? ; ) Chuck Yeager had some friends while he was in training, and they wanted a tree on their property topped or cut off near the top, so ole Chuck just went in and clipped it for the guy using the wing on his fighter. I don't remember how he explained the presence of foliage and branches in his leading edge to the mechanics and ground crew, but he figured it out somehow.

I have a 22" and i bought my kid an 18". The scout is DEFINITELY more wieldy, but my 22" is DEFINITELY more accurate. I like both.

My early production M1A Scout is reliably 1MOA on White Box Federali. Bone stock with irons, 100 M bench at 95F.
