The Doctor, Steven and Dodo find themselves in the Wild West as the gunfight at the OK Corral looms. A blood feud, mistaken identity, a toothache and a piano all threaten our travellers this time so let's take a look at what was (for a time) considered to be the very worst Doctor Who story of them all...

I've worked out what the problem was with the Dodo character. Backstage shenanigans saw Vicki hastily written off so they had needed a new female companion ever since but they hadn't worked out what they wanted her to be. Was she smart? Was she dumb? Was she brave? Or was she just what the scene required her to be at that time? Dodo effectively became a placeholder until it was all figured out (and spoiler for a future episode, this is basically reflected in how she left the show).

I remember my dad watching this on Video tape. I asked him how it was and he said. "It's crap, but good crap. Fun." Seems to be accurate looking at the clips here. Never watched it in the end but it looks like a lot of fun while being campy.

In my current (Take 2) marathon, I just saw this again last night. While my criticisms of this from a year ago remain, it's back up to a strong 3 stars (or a 6/10). If you can get past that...nauseating 40 verses of that song, it's actually quite fun of a story.

As somebody who isn't a big Fan of the Story, while I'd agree with some of your points. I must say I never understood the hatred about this Serial, it's far from perfect but a solid wild west story, with some really enjoyable Moments with Hartnell, Purves and Lane.

The Gunfighters? Whilst it's probably sat at the bottom in my ratings for series three, it has much more to offer than The Chase!

Excellent content! Honestly, I have to say, I don’t think people born after 1995 will appreciate Classic Who, from my experience. From around 2011, there were only 2 people I know born after 1995 who loved Classic Who. It is very concerning, but I have tried, but to no avail.

Always loved this story and really enjoy the comedy which is quite sophisticated compared to some stories. I don’t have a problem with accents (Peri's grates more).

This is one of my favorite Hartnell stories and I'm glad to see someone else giving it the credit it deserves. I genuinely didn't love any Hartnell stories up until this one when I first watched through the classic series in order (I have since reappraised a few earlier ones like The Time Meddler and The Aztecs). But when I first watched this story It flew by and was consistently entertaining with no low bits. Even these days I can hardly find anything I don't like. The mediocre American accents just lend to the more comedic nature of the story in my opinion, and I say that as an American myself. The cliffhanger with Steven singing and Dodo on the piano is one of my favorite cliffhangers in the entire show.

I've not seen The Gunfighters yet. How does it compare with that other sci-fi twist on the OK Corral, Star Trek's Spectre of the Gun?

As for the dodgy American accents, what about all the dodgy English accents in shows like "Charmed" from the early 2000s?

i know i've said it before but these videos are awesome, last time I watched the gunfighters I couldn't stand it but I'm on my own hartnell marathon so hopefully this time around I like it, still remember how awful the music is though.

It isnt the worst story of all time, nor the classic era, nor the 60s, nor the first Doctor's era... It isn't even the worst of the season.

I think this story has a lot of issues, but Hartnell seems to be having the time of his life. Not since the reign of terror or the romans has he seemed so delighted to be playing the part of someone who belongs in that historical society. Plus his "Well, I'm afraid I don't touch alcohol, but a little glass of milk and I should be only too delighted!" line cracks me up. This one is solidly in the middle of the pack and definitely not the worst hartnell. Also I just realized some people may have had expectations for it that were not very reasonable. The 60s was a golden era for westerns, and to expect a BBC production (a Doctor Who story no less) to match the highs of say The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance or A Fistful of Dollars would probably have hurt public perceptions of the story. Plus the last chance saloon song gets a bit obnoxious.

Have you ever met any of the actors from the series? Just curious as I have met most of them.

Haven't watched this review yet (I will). Gunfighters is 2 stars, barely, and the first real "marathon killer" for me. Saw this about a week and a half ago in my own marathon. Around 10 years ago, when I did this the last time, it would have been a strong 3 stars. 40 verses (yes 40, counted them last time around) of a song that gets old after the first 3 definitely doesn't do it any favors. For a Western, it felt quite weak. The mistaken identity was overly long and not well done. And Steven was let down horribly by this script. Someone from 1,000 years in the future still romanticizing (in that fashion) the American Old West is absurd. No imagination. And in 1966 we were soon to get over a lot of that romanticizing already. Best parts, the Doctor's trip to the dentist with Doc Holliday, and Dodo's having Holliday at gunpoint.

The humor often didn't land for me. And the bullying of Steven was cringe. Maybe I'll like it better again during the 70th anniversary marathon. For Westerns, it needs to be a well done story if it's going to glorify either murder or genocide. This didn't work for me. Is it the worst? For Doctor Who, no. For the Hartnell era, I'm going to have to say yes.

Im not a fan of Westerns or historical Dr Who stories bar a few. I watched this story a few months back and actually enjoyed it the only irritating parts was the constant piano and singing it became irritating - a few times yeah ok but it was at every scene change..... Lol
