The first artists' colony in the Netherlands was in the village of Oosterbeek. Because of the painters who came there to draw and paint nature and country life directly to the observation, Oosterbeek was later also called the Dutch Barbizon. Matthijs, Jocob and Willem Maris as well as Paul Gabriël and Anton Mauve laid the foundation for their later successes as representatives of the so-called "Hague School". The name "Haagse School" was a collective term embraced by the art trade and art critics for more or less like-minded artists who mainly had in common that they worked or lived in The Hague.
Just like the painters of Barbizon, the painters of the Hague School wanted to give shape to the everyday, fleeting and changeable moment and evoke atmosphere and mood. Like them, they usually didn't feel the need to spread a message or tell a story.
At the same time, they tried to connect with the tradition of Dutch painting from the 17th century.
When the surroundings of Oosterbeek and The Hague became too urbanized, a number of these artists sought refuge in the village of Laren.
