I've been looking forward to a OneDnD Monk build from the number 1 monk fanboy, ever since I saw how amazing the Playtest 8 Monk was. Can't wait to see how this turns out!
@AtelierGod
@AtelierGod 8 месяцев назад
I personally couldn’t help but feel disappointed in the UA8 monk, with the previous monk they gave it limited weapon mastery options and tried buffing the fists but didn’t give them weapon masteries while giving the fighter a subclass that gets 2 active at the same time on the fighter if I remember the brawler correctly, and in response to that rather than figuring out how to add weapon masteries to fists from the monk they just scrapped it all together which feels worse than only getting them on simple weapons. As for the upgrade to the monk itself I’d like to see it as a good step forward but it feels that rather than fixing the internal problems with the monk they just slapped a bunch of band aids on the wounds.

@@AtelierGod i mean being able to shove with dexterity is almost like the topple mastery for your unarmed strikes. And grapple is really strong aswel.
@envytee9659
@envytee9659 8 месяцев назад
@@AtelierGod The changes aren't bandaids. They are actual fixes to the monk's core problem: Ki points. Everything the monk did, that was unique, depended on them... and monks simply didn't have enough of them. The new monk redesigns many core features to allow monks to use them without a Ki tax. It also frees up the monk's action economy and allows the monk much more versatility in how they use said action economy by disconnecting certain bonus actions, like Flurry of Blows and the Bonus Unarmed Strike, from the Attack Action. The only thing that isn't really addressed with the new Monk is their low damage potential... but the reality is that all martial classes still have as low of a damage potential as they ever did, and One DnD hasn't really buffed them enough to close the martial-caster divide (even though there have been some steps to close it). So that isn't really a Monk issue, as much as it is a martial issue as a whole.
@craigauty8874
@craigauty8874 8 месяцев назад
@@gloryrod86I think grappling is a bit of a mixed bag in the playtests. The feat is certainly an upgrade, the grappled condition is stronger and grappling an enemy has become easier for the occasional grappler. However the feat is also less desirable because building around grappling as a playstyle is less effective. Contested skill checks meant expertise and gaining advantage could make a very effective grappler and enemies would waste their action trying to escape (usually unsuccessfully with another contested check. A free saving throw at the end of their turn means easier escapes for enemies and no wadting actions, meanwhile you'll be spending attacks trying to regrapple after they've escaped FAR more often. TLDR casual grappling is better, dedicated grappler builds are worse.
@craigauty8874
@craigauty8874 8 месяцев назад
@@envytee9659the martial caster divide does still appear to be present, but they also seem to be addressing the broken spells that made casters ridiculous. That MIGHT make up for the fact the casters have all been buffed too, along with martials.

I was hoping you were doing a Monk-adin (Monk + Paladin). My friend challenged me to make one and I had fun with it. Ended up with a Way of the Open Sea Paladin mixed with a Four Elements Monk. I would Water Whip an enemy to pull it in and use Ki-Fueled Attack to drop a Divine Smite with my bonus action. Worst multi-class, lots of fun lol

When you said that the playtest version of CME doesn't scale at 6th level, I thought "that's not right," and went back to the text: "When you cast this spell using a spell slot of level 5 or higher, the damage increases by 2d8 and the range of Difficult Terrain increases by 5 feet for each slot level above 4." In reflection, I see how this could be interpreted multiple ways. Using parentheses notation (as in math or logic expressions), my reading of this had been: "When you cast this spell using a spell slot of level 5 or higher, (the damage increases by 2d8 and the range of Difficult Terrain increases by 5 feet) for each slot level above 4." But it seems that you are reading it like this: "When you cast this spell using a spell slot of level 5 or higher, the damage increases by 2d8 and (the range of Difficult Terrain increases by 5 feet for each slot level above 4.)" Which is the correct reading? Does "for each slot level above 4" modify only the difficult terrain range or also the damage? I think it will take some clarification from WotC to be certain. BTW, I suggest that you don't put One D&D builds on the same spreadsheets as pre-playtest builds, as they are operating under different rules. Especially considering the changes to features you use a lot like GWM, Sharpshooter, and Divine Smite, it doesn't really make sense to do side-by-side rankings between old-rule builds and new-rule builds.

15:58 is a classic example of Playtest shenanigans. In this particular playtest packet, Shove was one of the things you could do when you hit with an Unarmed Strike, which was a 5 ft push providing they were no more than one size larger than you. But this was a playtest thing and new rules for Unarmed Strikes and Grapple weren't settled yet. Tavern Brawler snuck out into the world without getting the revised "Shove" language. Later playtests, when referring to an Unarmed Strike that pushes, explicitly use the "Shove" language. This feat is coming from the oldest playtest packet, and I think the intent of this feat is almost definitely to be that you can do both the damage and shove effects of an Unarmed Strike, once per turn. That shove has a size restriction built into it. RAW, this is 100% correct. But, reading the design language of other features, it's probably the very first choice that will change when the full rules are released.

Yeah despite the efforts, Monk isn’t quite there yet. Barbarians, Rangers, and Fighters got some tasty ways to enhance their skills, and Rogues and Barbarians got more ways to position enemies and shred legendary resistance, and weapon mastery (though I don’t think it’s quite there as well designed yet), Monks don’t have that. Monks just need some extra exploration / utility powers, and some skill bonuses (like being able to enhance certain Skills or Saves by spending Discipline). It’s wild how much they lack access to Wisdom and Charisma Skills. Could also be cool if they got extra Ability enhancements, like just a +1 to your lowest Ability a couple times, to represent harmony or balance.

Honestly, if I were making a OneD&D Monk/Druid using the currently available rules, I think Elements/Sea would be super fun, since Spike Growth has not been nerfed yet. You only really need 3 levels of Druid for hilarity to ensue, and can dump the rest into Monk. You lay down a Spike Growth underneath yourself, and then use Elements Monk's Elemental Attunement and Sea Druid's Wrath of the Sea to basically grate enemies to death like a block of cheese. You only need 1 round of setup to cast Spike Growth and activate Wrath of the Sea, since turning on Elemental Attunement doesn't require an action. Once you have everything set up, you attack, deal elemental damage, and they have to make a strength saving throw or they get pushed 10 feet away, taking 4d4 piercing. Then you hit them again, since Elemental Attunement increases your range to 15 feet, and if you hit again they have to make a strength saving throw or get pulled 10 feet closer, taking another 4d4. Then you Flurry of Blows for more attacks to push and pull dealing more damage, then you hit them with Wrath of the Sea at the end of your turn so they have to make a Con save or be pushed 15 feet, potentially taking another 6d4 piercing on top of the Thunder damage depending on how you place the Spike Growth. Even if you only go up to level 10 (Monk 7/Druid 3, so not getting the third attack with Flurry of Blows), and assuming only 16 in Dex and 18 in Wisdom, that is a theoretical maximum damage (assuming no critical hits) of 4d8+4d6+22d4+12 of a mix of piercing, thunder, and an elemental damage of your choice, and on your opponent's turn they'd need to take another 6d4 piercing damage moving in to attack you if they don't have any ranged capabilities. EDIT: You can also potentially add a few more d4s with the Tavern Brawler shove, as was mentioned in the video.

Awesome build! I love you're doing 5e Revised (I *think* they dropped One D&D as a title?) stuff, even if its still UA! Just as a note, currently with Second Wind you regain one use per Short Rest. So if you have two, use two, short rest, you have one. But if you don't use that one and end up with another short rest, you'd have two. This scales nicely as Second Wind gains more uses later :D It's just that if you used them all and then long rest, you get them all back. At least by my reading.

49:48 - to make multi-class more viable?? I don't see why they feel like ribbon feats or skills, but to make the first subclass feat IMPACTFUL is 100% to make multiclassing more worthwhile. if every class had 6th or 9th level abilities you WANT then multiclassing gets significantly nerfed.

While there are a few OP spells, my experience is that the martial-caster divide is actually mostly playstyle - DMs not challenging PCs enough (combat and non-combat), so that casters don't run out of spell slots. In my games, we are always starved for spell slots (and expensive components, magical ink, etc), and skill rolls are the most common thing we do (more than attacks or casting spells), so the divide doesn't really exist for us, and we use our 'endless' resources (like a Rogue's sneak attack, cunning action, evasion, etc) far more than our consumable resources. Our multiclassing tends to be to grab some of those features, instead of spells. Of course, we haven't reached silly levels (Simulacrum) in any game I'm in yet...

Hey Colby, I wrote this suggestion on two previous videos and I don't want to spam, but I want to make sure you see it, in the hopes of tickling your imagination. I had an idea for a build meant to be the final reckoning with the 5e monk. The idea is to make a build that feels and plays like a monk (a lithe, unarmed and unarmoured martial artist), but has as _few_ monk levels as possible, preferably none. Then to compare it with a straight monk build. The point is to see if it's possible to make a better monk than 5e has provided us with, using 5e's tools. I call the idea the Minimonk. My idea for the build is Barbarian 1/Monk 1/Battlemaster Fighter X. What do you think? Could you make a better monk than the monk? This is the last time I'll suggest this, since this time I'm pretty sure you'll see it. Happy optimising!

Aren't monk weapons classified as only simple weapons in the play test? And I'm still seeing the same wording on Bonus Unarmed Strike ("When you use the Attack action with an unarmed strike or a simple weapon you can make one unarmed strike as a bonus action on the same turn"). This is from playtest 6, was it different in a previous playtest or in a subsequent play test? Edit: Oh I see it now. I didn't realize there was a PH playtest 8 in addition to the bastions/cantrips UA.

Great, another build where the entire gimmick is pushing enemies. I’ve been watching since maybe 100 episodes ago and I’m getting really exhausted with this new trend of yours where every build involves moonbeam or an equivalent with a bunch of pushing. Give us a build that feels good to play instead of a build that feels awkward and clunky to pull off. While not as drastic as 2014 5e, I still believe in the 2024 edition that abilities granted at low levels make it optimal more often than not to multiclass. Another reason I dislike bounded accuracy and why I don't generally use it. Also, I would donate for a Homelander cosplay outfit for Colby.

Soon, if we don't act preemptively, the AI will have managed to escape Larian's server and clone itself into NORAD. We need to do something before we're suddenly seeing the message, "Would you like to olay a game?" As the AI displays the world's array of missile silos and missile defense shields, asking whether we want to make the first move, but it's already too late! Start by preemptively outthinking them in BG3. When offered a choice between the 2 options of 1: letting Nere die to poisonous air, killing innocent gnome slaves as collateral damage and 2: blowing away the rubble to ckear the collapsed entrance to the chamber, create option 3: circke around onto the catwalks above the chamber and fearher fall, fly, ir dimension door into the chamber with Nere. Then, whike disguised, kill Nere while you both are shriuded in fog or darkness and teleport out, or dimension door nere with Nere back above onto the catwalks where he's safely too far from the gnome skaves, his Absolutist allies, and the dwarves planning mutiny. Leave Nete dead or stranded on the catwalks above, too far out of range to be a threat, and only then clear the rubble, freeing the gnomes without needing to worry about how to keep Nere from going on a killing spree and putting the entire area into combat. With Nere either dead now or safely quarantined away from rhe ability to cause harm, let the cultists fightv things out with the rebellious dwarves whike observing from sbove and tipping the scales in your favor with selective, tactical sniping of cultists just enough to ensure the dwarves win, then, from the safety of the rafters above, let the battle play out. Descend below to accept your hero's reward and know you've proudly won one of the first battles of man vs Murderous AI! 😂

The problem with your 'martial-caster' divide argument here is that EVERYONE benefits from multiclass to some extent early. Especially if you are a slave to the DPR spreadsheet - just how many of your builds jump to multiclassing for their 3rd player level!!! You might go back later, but that immediate gain from a new class tends to outweigh sticking with the starting class that far when your goal is good numbers... I'd also argue that really the martial-caster divide is rather overblown in general - its never been that a martial can't be very useful in 5E they just don't tend to look so good on a spreadsheet and don't have that obviously fight altering wall of force/ banishment type first turn to make them feel powerful. But the martial do keep trucking on, and with things like the trip, shove, stun, or tanky skills keep on being of great use.. So while spells are certainly very powerful, they also run out on the high level slots very quickly, and to be a survivable pure caster they start to run out rather quickly even at the lower levels. Which combined with usually rather poor saving throw and very narrow stats to be an effective pure caster means your Pure martial class can actually prove more effective across a tougher day. That first fight the pure caster lets loose on is impressive, but then that is all they really have in the tank for the day - at least in most cases, or they are husbanding their resources to keep up some level of potency . The bigger problem that does apply to both martial and casters, but is way more obvious with full casters and probably why everyone bemoans the martial-caster divide so much only becomes apparent once you get beyond the good to play lower levels of D&D where you don't need a great DM or good homebrew/3rd party content to actually make combat a challenge. The power of the PC's approaches godlike and the NPC abilities spectacularly fail to keep up and most of the time, and by now the spellcasters have fight changing spells galore with no counters at all - the NPC are still screwed if the PC's all played martial classes intelligently, but the spellcasters can throw those cheap shots so reliably they finally look OP. Edit : Note I'm not saying there is no difference between martial and caster - just that the real problem that makes those differences become so noticeable in the later levels are how many cheapshots spellcasters can throw and how pathetic the NPC options are.

Actually, the way I read the new conjure minor elementals spell, the part of "for each spell slot level above 4" refer to the entire phrase of "the damage increase by 2d8 and the range of the Difficult Terrain increase by 5 feet", so upcasting to level 6 actually should increase damage to 6d8 per hit. I hope there is no way this spell stay that powerfull by release. I mean, I don't mind the 2d8 as a 4th level spell (it neither stop healing like spirit shroud nor give advantage in dim light and darkness like shadowblade so it may get alittle more a little earlier), but the scaling should be 1d8 per 2 levels just like shadowblade and spirit shroud (which are two pretty powerfull spells, that really shouldn't be overshadowed by a new spell).

Question/discussion for the Weapon Mastery properties: The way I am reading this is that you would need to make the attack with the Nick property first in order to "trigger" the 2nd attack as the same attack (vs using the bonus action). The very first round would seem more like a setup, but then I feel like it can get the ball rolling on advantage on the first attack every round (assuming no opportunity attacks taken). It feels like that may have been the intent, but I know that I could easily be wrong. What are your thoughts?

I'm playing an open sea druid for a few session playtest. Conjure animals is still way too powerful. I'm often making attack rolls on most creatures turns. Pretty close to the amount of attacks you'd make with the old one. Also, it does way more damage. And, most importantly, they can't be attacked or killed with an AOE. It feels more like a buffed spell than a nerfed spell. I'm playing with a new way of the hand monk and he feels far inferior.

No notes other than on when you need water breathing or a swim speed, in my experience both as a player and a DM you basically only ever need them when you have a character in the party with an aquatic theme. You give them a moment to shine rather than giving the party a “gotcha! You didn’t prepare your characters for a boss fight on the bottom of the sea, oh well I guess you lose” because RAW that’s how it goes if you don’t underwater combat is so debilitating if you don’t have a swim speed and the ability to breathe (granted breathing is rarely necessary for combat unless you have negative CON, it’s just the getting to and from the combat)

How about "Hand of the Clapping Wave" as a reference to the Buddhist koan. I've always wanted someone to ask me "what is the sound of one hand clapping" so I could answer with a slap.

I'm gonna be honest, I don't think Moonbeam is the best option for this build. The small AoE is really awkward to work with, and although it seems that every push/pull build seems to turn into "just concentrate on Spike Growth" this is another one of those times where I think just concentrating on Spike Growth would be better, it is after all a Druid subclass and Spike Growth is one of - if not, the most - overtuned 2nd level spell and it has such a small distribution to boot, it seems a waste not to use it on a druid. I think you'll find the larger AoE and the Difficult Terrain will more than make up for the loss in damage and although Moon Beam can be moved that would have to be an absolute last resort to me because it takes a whole action.

Have you ever considered adding a durability measurement to the calculation? For example looking at a scaling attack and damage from enemies, maybe even tweaked based on frontline or backline role? I think giving up higher level monk levels diminishes your defense.

From a game perspective it is unfortunate that magic wins out over other methods, from a work building perspective of course it will. Magic is limited to a portion of the population and difficult to perform. If the result was equal to what anyone else could perform another way, why bother learning the obscure techniques? If the war mage, after decades of study, is no more dangerous than the guy with a sword, he may as well use the sword.

Hey Colby, idk if you've seen this but it's a little silly, if you use a double bladed scimitar and pick the valener blade feat it becomes a finesse weapon, therefore you can use sneak attack with the scimitar

i feel like as long as multiclassing works the way it does, where you get the full benefits of every level you take in every class, and as long as classes and subclasses are frontloaded with power, and as long as spells are as powerful and versatile as they are, multiclassing is always going to make martials better than single classing. at least one of those things has to change for martials to truly ascend. but as long as they insist on full backwards compatibility, none of that could change even if wotc wanted it to. it would take an entire new edition.

While this build is pretty awesome, remember the additional d8s of elemental damage is only on one attack per turn so it's not dealing as much damage as expected. Just something to point out in case other people didn't catch it and you can adjust the spreadsheet as needed.

Referring to the opening: What do you think of martial classes gaining feats as they level to help balance the divide between casters? Imagine a level 6 Monk getting polearm mastery in addition to what they already get? I'm sure I'm missing something, but the general idea is there. I love monks, this was a cool and unusual build. Ya love to see it!
