These old bow saws cut the best. I have used a 25 year old bow saw to build my shelter. The saw blade was never sharpened once and it still doesnt get dull. They must have had better steels back then.

Sir, I am a young Marine (19 years old) and I am infatuated with these videos. I have done expedition backpacking, buchcrafting, hiking, canoeing, etc. but never something like this. I admire this and as I sit around the barracks it gives me hope and something to aspire for. Thank you for all these videos. I hope one day I can create something close to anything you create.

I’m late commenting fella’s but yeah the only thing stopping me is the wife’s business, I’m 53 and been following Shawn since day 1, he’s sparked child& teen memories of the local mountains I grew up in learning to shoot rifles, hunting skills, and hiking as the day was long...I also surf being Hawaiian but truthfully the wild is where I’m more comfortable. But I will build a cabin with traditional building supplies or both rural/pre-milled eventually, if it’s your dream too “just do it”! ML&Aloha Kekoa🤙🏽🐺🌲

Octavia B It has been very satisfying and a journey. My cabin is in Maysville, NC and I have worked through many nights and now my wife and I live there. Haha. Good but challenging journey.

I like these tool talks that you do as some of the stuff is not available here but it is good if I want to send a present to some of my friends in Canada. What you mentioned about leather gloves, I wore leather gloves when I worked as an electrician when I had to wear gloves, in some cases, you cannot wear gloves but when I did they were leather. When they wore out and I threw them out the labourers would scramble to get them as they always got the cheapest gloves and appreciated me giving them the opportunity to get them. On jobs where I was working with the same labourers I actually bought a load of them and gave them all a pair.

This is great to watch. A friend and I built a cabin, off grid in Montana a few years back for a guy. Used all lodgepole pine harvested from the property. We cheated a little, chainsaws, but time was a factor. Hand scribed, swedish cope, chinkless. 12k lp generator and solar, cistern in the loft. It was a real fun job. I'm in the process of obtaining a piece of land to do this for myself now, so I'm a little envious, I'll admit. I'll just be following you for ideas, and motivation until then. I've done a few log builds for others, next one's for me. You probably don't need it, but if I could, I'd love to help. I'm a little far to physically help, but any input that could help, I'd love to be a part. Good luck, and I'll be watching.

If you peel the logs with sap running sometimes mildew will grow on the sweet sap. I sprayed the peeled logs with a mild bleach/water mix and it kept the logs clean. I also learned to move the logs close to the home site BEFORE peeling so you don't get the peeled logs dirty dragging them to the cabin. Dave L

Hi Shawn! Most of those hand tools you showed us I'm already familiar with, so, I surprised myself! I love using hand tools, and I'm an artist and craftsperson, so they really appeal to me, plus, growing up in the country, my dear dad taught me a lot about using such tools. I can use power tools too, and quite competently, but the dang things are noisy, use a lot of energy, and some are outright dangerous. Hand tools suit my artistic, creative nature much better. Doesn't Lee Valley have some awesome stuff?

Im an ontario boy so watching this in my own province is massively informative. Your doing a great job man, keep it up. I was wondering though, how difficult would it bee to add side rooms the way you do the build??? I'm aiming to make one that will fit my sons and friends when they visit.
