HISTORATHON 2024
Historathon is a year-long celebration of reading historical nonfiction. The goal is to read, discuss, and spotlight works of history, and to encourage reluctant readers to give history a try. The calendar year will be divided into three-month blocks, with each block focusing on a particular period of time:
Jan-March = Prehistory-500 CE
April-June = 500-1500
July-Sept = 1500-1820
Oct-Dec = 1820-Present
To participate, simply read a work of history that falls into the time period for each quarterly segment of the year. Read more if you’d like! Tailor the choices to your interests or try something completely new.
Historathon "Side Quests": We will also be encouraging/participating in history-related activities throughout the year, including watching historical films/documentaries, trying historical recipes, listening to historical music, etc. Feel free to join us!

The Handmaid's Tale scares the life out of me because it could very well happen here in the US in the very near future. When the Dead Rise sounds interesting and I love that cover!

What makes the book scarier to me is that you wouldn’t need a violent military coup to achieve that future. There are plenty of people today who would vote for it.

Even though I live in Canada 🇨🇦 book creeped me out, many ways that could happen. Or maybe it’s that I just read 1984 a few weeks ago and am now into researching woke 😳🤔 Different world for sure.

I just reread Lord of the Flies and 1984 all part of the banned book project. I am at 9/24 done 😊 Looking forward to Horror MAYhem for some light reading 🤣🤣🤣

I also read The Handmaid’s Tale last month and wow, what a chilling and scary world. The scariest part was that so many people went along with it, especially the women who were training the Handmaids. It seemed like as long as they had some power of others, they went along with it. Awful to see the twisted interpretation of the Old Testament be forced into law like that. When it came down to it, it was much more about power than religion. I liked how the writing felt more frantic and hopeless as the book went on. I liked the ambiguity in the ending too! Awesome review! When the Dead Rise sounds really interesting! The cover is beautiful.

Hear! Hear! for footnotes! Completely agree. Really enjoying my Historathon reads to date especially in Q2. Reading Winters in the World by Eleanor Parker and A Distant Mirror. Both are excellent.

I really want to read A Distant Mirror. I’ve been on the lookout for a nice copy at second-hand book sales but for some reason whenever I find a copy it looks like it’s been through a natural disaster.

I loved The Handmaid’s Tale. It made me so angry reading it I had to put it down several times and just walk away. But it’s well worth a read. The other book sounds interesting as well but I don’t think I’d be able to get my hands on it.

I have been enjoying your Historathon this second year!! Margaret Atwoods' book was only interesting for me, you are right the plot was pretty obvious...BTW did you notice that last year at Christmas Melania had all of her Christmas trees decorated like Handmaids Tale on the front porch of the White House. Interesting political statement!! Of course, it made me super angry. The book The Dead Rise sounds really interesting. I wish it were available somewhere.. I will keep a lookout, perhaps someone will see some and I can find one. Thanks for the in-depth review until I find one. I will write to the publisher and see if they have any suggestions.

Last year in May the publisher, Boydell & Brewer, had their big sale. Maybe they’ll have it again this year.

I remember reading Handmaid's Tale in college as one of the better novels for a class. When the Dead Rise is a super niche book lol, right up your alley it seems though. Yeah footnotes are superior to endnotes haha

l like footnotes at the end of each chapter, wish they'd do that more, but it's very rare. Probably a printers nightmare.

The Handmaid's Tale is one of those I've heard so much about that I've neglected to, you know, actually read the book. I probably should see what the hubbub's about. 😁 When the Dead Rise sounds like my kind of thing, and I echo your sentiment about footnotes. Interesting point: Catholics, Orthodox, and (I think) "mainline" Protestants insist on BODILY resurrection as a creedal point. So is an isolated case a horrific revenant and a communal case the Triumph of the Last Day? I also wonder about this from a chemical perspective. There's only so much matter to go around, and that matter is constantly being cycled and employed in new ways, often in new organisms, sometimes of other species. Sorting things out for a communal bodily resurrection would seem a thorny problem with the potential for some dark comedy. 🤔 Have a good one!

The book does address some people’s historical concerns, such as if their bodies were eaten by sharks, etc. How would they come back? What would they look like? What age would they be? And so on. It feels like a ready-made Monty Python sketch.

@revenantreads Here's a gross bit of trivia tangentially related to this stuff. There was a lot of medieval interest in the foreskin of Christ. Why? Relics were big business, and a relic from J.C. Himself would be particularly sought after. However, since the Church declared Christ to be bodily resurrected and ascended, the only "Christologically Correct" relics would be anatomical structures feasibly shed prior to the ascension. Well, it was reasoned that the guy was Jewish, and thus was medieval Europe swamped by peddlers of messianic foreskins. Humans are weird.
