Little Miss Sunshine | Accepting the Absurd

'Little Miss Sunshine' teaches us to accept our absurd existence, and in this acceptance, we can find joy. In this video, I bring in concepts from Albert Camus, Friedrich Nietszche, and Marcel Proust to illustrate that the suffering we feel should not be resisted, but accepted, a powerful concept to anyone who’s gone through a dark time in their life.

Little Miss Sunshine got me through some hard times and was a very pivotal piece of art in my life. Recently, I lost my religion after leaving a cult, and absurdism is the only philosophy that was able to keep me here and help me make it through losing everything and having to face nihilism for the first time. Seeing those two things combined in this video essay was so lovely, interesting, and eye opening. Little Miss Sunshine really was my first introduction to absurdism, I just didn’t have the words or concepts to understand it :) This is a great essay, thank you!

fucking brilliant. i knew i enjoyed this movie but wasn’t much into philosophy when i watched it. i since have developed an interest and done light studying on it all, and stoicism, nietzche, frankl, and camus have risen to the top. your video made me want to rewatch the movie now! truly a work of art.

Yes I so much agree! I’m almost 46 so I’m seeing everything in a new light also thanks to EMDR. I watched this movie so many times back then. This guy’s analysis really helped me understand why and gave me some clarity I’m currently in great need of. Young adults these days are the sh!t. They teach me so much! They’re so dang smart

I think you could argue that the grandpa was battling to stay relevant. Only Olive thought he was still valuable as a guiding figure and when given the chance to be that figure, the grandpa was able to shine. He was positive and encouraging(not superficially like his son), sober, and invested with whomever he was speaking. However, his brand of these qualities miss the mark in a variety of ways and can come across as out of touch with the family and society. Though despite the grandpa dying, leaving a fair amount of film time left, his absence isn't all that obvious, rather his influence is still felt between the family. Zooming out a little, it's interesting because the grandpa will often give advice similar to what the uncle, would later give when on the pier. In reference to Proust having suffered... concludes with "do what you love and fuck the rest". How the father desperately clings to what success looks like, often steamrolling his family to make a point, only to realize that his family is his greatest success. So on and so on.

Suffering may have made me who I am today, but I would have absolutely preferred to skip most of it. I think many people who glorify suffering are just trying to reclaim terrible moments as something that didn't happen for "no reason," that maybe it was a good thing, actually. I think that it's just a coping mechanism, but it's one that I do understand. The people who make me mad are the ones that glorify suffering from the outside, from a place of privilege. If they get to be themselves without having to go through it, how can they sit there and say that all the trials that I went through (and am still going through) are a good thing? It feels like a rich person indulging in poverty p0rn or a person going on a self-indulgent "humanitarian" trip to feel inspired in their own lives. Oh, did seeing all those starving kids "enlighten" you? Eff all the way off
@msjkramey

BTW, when I say "you," I don't mean you specifically. I'm saying "you" in the general sense

You showed the acceptance of the absurd is pretty good in this video, probs man, but for me the revolt, with passion and love against the absurd is missing, which really puts a bow on camus philosophy. It's the facing of the absurd and the embracing and the rebelling that makes it so wonderful for me

Love the video!! I will watch this movie again with my gf if possible (since she likes another genre of movies like those asians as Wong Kar-Wai etc) and if I can move her to watch it, I will share this video with her to be sure of complementing the whole meaning of it! Also, since you're starting this channel, I really don't seem to appreciate a lot those kind of movies and I wish I could understand better. Maybe someday you could do a video of Chungking Express? It would mean the world for me and I know many people would be happy to be introduced to this piece of art through one of your decent videos! I'm asking because I trust what you said in the beggining of the video. Your channel has a great potential of growing and being one of the greatest about those thematics! Writting with gratitude, your new subscriber, John.

Tip: back up from your microphone by like 4-6 inches, or you’ll get all these pops and plosives
@crazygreek6341
@crazygreek6341 8 дней назад
Tbh the distance is good, but the technique is off. For dynamic mics, the best practice especially in rooms without heavy post processing like in live situations, is to speak a bit of axis, so the tip of the mic should point, at 4 inches away, to the corner of your mouth and never speak to a dynamic capsule from the vertical side, because the build in plosive filter is on the top infront of the capsule. Podcastage has a great video to mic technique

Did not make the first 100 :P Anyway. This is a gripping video essay, but consider leaving out or minimizing the background music. You have a soft voice, and the music, while not annoying, sometimes equals your voice in strength, making it hard for people like me to hear you. Don't fear the silence. Anyway, without his stone, what would Sisyphus do and be? And what will become of his stone? Not to mention the faith of that mountain?

7:10 = do not ask if everyone can accept suffering as our lot? Ask as Fred would: would you redefine your labels, and accept the good and bad as ordered. Amor Fati. GesamtLiebe. To love our existence, all of it. The English word that is closest is vicissitudes... The good and bad both make up who we are - Gestalt.
