To increase shoulder strength for the handstand get use to the handstand position; that is performing walk up the wall handstands and holding the position at the top. Remember to always stay tight! For flexibility you should perform the stretches we recommended every day as well as working on the open shoulder position when in the handstand against a wall.

I really like the detail here and there are some great general tips. As a handstand teacher myself, I do think there is one point that needs to be added - shoulder elevation in the inverted position. In the handstand if the practitioner lets their shoulders be pushed all the way 'down' (actually up, but you know what i mean), they really risk injuring the ligaments in the gleno-humeral joint. Some specific shoulder engagement is necessary to make sure there is muscular stabilization instead of relying on ligamentous stability. But I love the video overall!

Drive your leading leg (first leg to come off the ground).The effort in this leg drive is what will get you upright. Also, handstands towards a wall will let you know if you're providing sufficient leg drive; if you don't touch the wall you need more drive. Lastly, be sure you have enough upper body strength to hold yourself upside down by hitting the handstand position with knees on a block and also using a wall, basically get comfortable in the position. See 4:37 for the ideal kick up.

When kicking up aim to keep the legs straight and midsection tight (and hollow). One leg should provide the drive whilst the other catches up at '12 o'clock'. Note at 4:37 how the right leg catches up to the left, though only when the left is already in the handstand position. Remember, you will get the greatest benefit from skills such as the handstand through consistent training.

Not at all! That won't be a problem. Usually, pointing the toes helps to keep everything through the leg tight (quads, hamstrings, calves.etc). If you're unable to point your toe just do the best you can, and focus on having the whole body (including upper and lower legs) tight!

To explain briefly: Maintain body tension and slightly close the shoulder angle on the descent. On the ascent, drive through your palms (as you would drive through your heels in a squat). Open the shoulders at the top to complete the repetition. We have noted your interest in this skill and will aim to make this tutorial soon (even sooner if there proves high demand for a tutorial on this skill).

Lachlan - Great tutorial! Any pointers on how to become more consistent with kicking up to the correct position? If you were to suggest one thing to focus on during the kick-up; ie shoulders over hands, what might it be?

Kick up with both feet at once, don't be afraid to lean! (Hard) and maintain that hollow body position. If you follow those points but still can't do it, it's simply a matter of practice :)

@RPGpunk007
@RPGpunk007 11 лет назад
Awesome tutorial. But I do have one question. I can hold a handstand using a wall for as long as I want to, and once I reach the handstand position, I can maintain it even without the wall. However, I simply cannot master the kick up into the handstand. I either end up kicking with too much power or too little power, thereby resulting in a premature handstand. If by chance I do use the exact amount of power while kicking up, I can stay in a handstand for about half a minute. Please help me out!

Shoulder angle, keeping a tight hollow body shape and using your hands/wrists are the main factors in balancing a handstand. Revise these sections in the tutorial and don't stop practicing!

I can hold a freestanding handstand with my back arched (like at 1:02), but not all the way straight like you described. Not only does that look better, but I indeed feel a lot of strain on my lower back. Somehow when I keep my body straight I can't hold balance anymore. This seems counter-intuitive and is quite annoying! Any tips?

@RingFrat
@RingFrat 11 лет назад
Hi Amit, Correct safety exits and methods to maintain balance are discussed at length in this video. To maintain balance keep your whole body tight and rigid. It sounds like you're arching your back which will pull you over. Please watch the tutorial and your question will be answered. For any specific problems please don't hesitate to ask.
