The Hard Way: The Best Buddy Cop Movie You Never Saw?

In 2024, when you say the name James Woods, people think of his controversial presence on X rather than the great actor we all considered him to be back in the day. One downside to the reversal of fortune to his career is that many of his films don’t get a lot of play now, no matter how entertaining they are, such as this week’s Best Movie You Never Saw: The Hard Way. A fun take on the buddy cop genre that paired Woods with Michael J. Fox, the premise involved a hard-bitten NYC cop being forced to take an obnoxious actor under his wing so the latter can prep for an important role. Meanwhile, they are looking for a serial killer named The Party Crasher, played by the great Stephen Lang. With slick direction by John Badham and an early role for L.L. Cool J, this is one of the best action flicks of the nineties many people have seen!

The Hard Way really shines on every level. The story, directing, talent, pacing and action are all spot on. This is truly an under appreciated 90's action flick. The spotlight was on blockbusters like Total Recall, Die Hard 2, Terminator 2, Robocop 2 and even Dick Tracy. However, This seemed to fly under the radar.

Woods has an unpredictable quality that always made him worth watching, no matter the film. He brings an intensity to every role he plays, no matter how modest the project, or how limited its ambition. I am appalled by the practice of dismissing an artists body of work for reason of their past misdemeanours or recent comments. Judge the art, not the man.

Classic 90's flick, one of my favorites from the early 90's. Totally under rated, I don't pay attention to what actors say on Twitter, so James Woods is fine. He has a lot of great movies to his name. Separate the art from the artist and you can enjoy more things for what they are.

I saw The Hard Way in theatres in the UK, and it is one of my favourites. Woods and Fox are both superb, and fox's comedic timing is brilliant. I rated Woods in Videodrome and Cop, and was delighted to see him in a lighter role. His jibe to the bodyguard 'you might want to slow down, somewhere there's a small country going hungry' still cracks me up... And I said it to my wife just 2 days ago!! Great video, and a great film. The Hard Way is one of the most underrated action comedies of all time with the perfect team-up of Michael J. Fox and James Woods and directed by John Badham, one of my favorite directors of all time. He directed some of the movies that I really enjoy like Wargames, Short Circuit, Saturday Night Fever, Dracula, Point of No Return, Bird on a Wire, Nick of Time and Stakeout, which is one of the greatest suspense-comedies ever. Aside from Fox and Woods, Stephen Lang as The Party Crasher is one of the most menacing and most enjoyable villains of all time. He's like a more psychotic and goofy version of Mark Hamill's Joker. And let's not forget the Frog Dog scene, which is basically a hot dog with french fries on top and because of this movie, I tend to re-create the Frog Dog. This movie holds up pretty well and I saw the movie on A&E and on HBO, and I enjoyed it, it was the perfect mix of action and comedy with some comedic moments and some serious moments. Now, I feel like watching the movie since I have it on Blu-Ray along with Bird on a Wire.

The Hard Way is my 2nd favorite movie of all time. It’s a lot of fun to watch. I was 12 when it came out in 1991. I wanted to see it at the theaters, but missed the chance. When it came out on video I bought it at Blockbuster Video when it was on sale on the previously viewed videos that the store put on sale after 6-8 months on video. I loved when I first saw it. Throughout the years, I bought it on DVD and now own it on Blu-ray. It’s a great film and very funny. The climax is John Badman’s homage to Hitchcock. Great review. I’m glad there those who still appreciate and remember great movies, back at a time when Hollywood still made great films. One more thing: After the climax when Lang is being taken into an ambulance after being shot, if you look closely in the background you can see playing on the marquee is Dick Tracy. Man, I would love to go back to the summer of 1990 and see that at the theater again.

I saw this again recently and I was pleasantly surprised by how smart and cool it was. Michael J Fox was fun and funny but he was convincingly serious when he needed to be. Stephen Lang totally surprised me. He's so grounded and staunch in Avatar. He was never this eccentric, not even when he played Ike in Tombstone. But Lang still did a great job. I don't think Fox was dominated by Woods or Lang. Woods was wonderful as the gritty, and neurotic cop. And I loved his character arc

This was the first R-Rated movie I saw on VHS (along with TERMINATOR 2). I loved it back then, mainly because I was a BACK TO THE FUTURE nut and thus a MJF fan (the ending is especially cool with a near-perfect fake out that makes me laugh even harder years later).

This movie is a classic. It holds up extremely well.

I was just a lil chibi when my parents rented this as a kid, but I definitely need to give it another look considering all the time that has passed.
