The Substitute: The Best 90s Action Movie You Never Saw!

In the 80s and 90s, an interesting cycle of inspirational teacher movies was being made. You know the type - the film where a big star plays a down-and-out teacher who gets posted in some crime-ridden school, and they manage to turn things around? Often, they were based on true stories, like Stand and Deliver, Dangerous Minds, Lean on Me and a few others. Then, there were the more fanciful, tough-guy teacher movies, like Nick Nolte’s Teachers and James Belushi’s underrated The Principal. But of all these movies, the most badass, by far, is a little movie called The Substitute starring Tom Berenger.

Tom Berenger was perfect in that role as a former soldier turned substitute teacher. He had the look of a grizzled badass. He was good in someone to watch over me, sniper, shattered, major league, training day, etc.

Thanks for this! This type of B-Grade fair was a weekend sleepover staple when I was a young teen in the early 90s. Was definitely an actor who peaked in Hollywood too early. He had great range and was perfectly believable as the “Everyman” who could kick ass, make dinner for the kids, and correct the math test. The twist with Ernie Hudson is what made this one for me. He was a Ghostbuster. He can’t be the bad guy! This one just went on my watch list since it has been decades since have seen this one.

Funny I just watched the Tom Berenger Debra Winger movie Betrayed (1988) a few days ago. Tom Berenger is an interesting actor I would love to see more analysis of him. His skin often seems red/leathery and he often has that military energy to him, though I don’t think he was ever in the military. I’d be curious what his overall image was in the 80s and 90s and why he got stuck into straight-to-dvd work.

Yep grew up watching this on vhs. Loved how it turned the snoozer cliched inspirational teacher formula on its head. Berenger was solid as always & it was interesting seeing Hudson have fun as the villain, having previously only known him as good guys in Ghostbusters & The Crow. Berenger pretty much landed in typecast hell as a military guy after turning in such a brilliant performance in Platoon, but it worked. Another solid one is the original Sniper, also starrimg Billy Zane Edit: oops yep you pretty much covered everything I said already. Thats what happens when you pause the video to comment before watching it all

Hi Chris, Thanks very much for yet another great review of a somewhat forgotten classic of video rental shops back in the days of yore :). It's a funny coincidence because around 3 months ago, I posted my take on "The Substitute" in my short review. It would mean the world to me if you could have a look at it in your spare time :). In a nutshell, we have very similar opinions on this kitschy, yet entertaining, piece of a B-movie filled to the brim with the '90s cheese :). Thanks in advance and until next time, Chris! Not my best review by any stretch, but the film isn't a gem of any sort either, it's just a very solid 90's actioner with lots of cheese and THE unbreakable Tom Berenger in the titular role :). Still, it definitely constitutes a walk down memory lande to the good, old era of the VSH tapes in my case :). Anyhow, thanks a lot for even showing interest in that, you rock :)! Cheers, Chris!
