Good Ole Bethpage. Welcome to Long Island! Edit: That birdie on 14 was nice. Edit 2: Just wanted to share a quick story: Everyone always said my uncle was a great golfer. In the past few weeks I have been spending a lot of time with him because he was sick. I learned that he once shot 2 under at Bethpage Black. He passed away yesterday from cancer, but watching this was like walking the course with him and being proud. Nicest man I ever knew. Love you Uncle Chuck

I can’t tell you enough how much I enjoyed watching you play this course. This is by far my favorite round of golf on RU-vid I have ever watched. I could say it was the course that made it so special, but in reality it was watching you enjoy yourself. You remained positive and focused while keeping your enthusiasm in check throughout the entire round. This is what the game of golf is all about, simply having fun! Can’t wait to see what lies ahead for you on the PGA Tour. Keep up the positive attitude and the great golf play and it won’t be long before you win your 1st tournament and major. Well Done!

Now living in Fort Laudy FL, but born and bred NYC not 30 minutes from Bethpage, it’s so nostalgic seeing content like this ! Believe it or not growing up as a NY state resident I never paid more than $75 to play BP Black. Oh how spoiled I was having an all world, Tour & Majors used ( and upcoming 2025 Ryder Cup ) track to play pretty much on the regular and whenever I wanted. Every year as the golf season came to a close, due to winter weather in the NorthEast, there was nothing like playing BP Black to measure where your game was. That track is a true & absolute golf barometer. Now living in Florida for 10 years there are very very few things other than proper bagels & pizza that I miss about the GulaG that’s better known as New York. Seeing content of Bethpage State Park, the national treasure it is with its 5 tracks, floods all of the greatest golf memories I have growing up there !!

It’s super subtle, but Grant’s mental game is absolutely incredible. Hits it into a bunker on a par three “i love bunker shots” starts bogey, par save, par save slaps his next drive into the thick stuff “Havent seen a good swing yet, but these are the fun days, these are the days where we just keep grinding” honestly incredible, wish I could play that loose

Really glad I got to watch this. It brings back many memories of some very good golf and days when the Black Course just kicked your butt . I started playing the Black course when I was about 16. Played it into my 40’s when I moved my company out of Long Island NY. Back in the day we use to drive to the course at 11.00 or 12:00 midnight and sleep in your car to get an early tee time. They we’re called bakery tickets. Girlfriends and wives were not to happy with this arrangement but we were golf nuts and loved it. Thanks for the memories.

Yes your are right we treated the guy that gave out the tickets with a lot of respect and fresh donuts. After coming back every week we became regulars and good friends with the ticket guy. It got to a point that only one guy had to be in the car all night instead of all 4 of us. The ticket guy would come by our car and say your other 3 guys are out picking up breakfast RIGHT. And of coarse the one guy in the car would say sure that’s where they are,wink wink. It was a great experience at the time. When I moved out of New York and joined a nice private country club I would tell my new friends about the Beth Page Black course and how tough it was I think only a few guys believed me.

So I gotta ask…playing on a difficult course I’m sure is not easy but doesn’t playing on something really manicured and plush make it a little easier? @@Tom-ok2rh i will say this... being in the rough and being buried doesnt make it easy. but ull never get a messed up hard pan lie or a patchy rough lie. in the fescue its all up to the golf gods. but rough fairways and bunkers are predictable. the sand in the bunkers is so soft. its has its perks.

I'm 64 now and admit playing the Black many times (probably 30) and my best score is 100 (when I kept a full score card). The first time I ever walked this course was in the 2002 Open and I had not even played it yet. Length is important here and the fact that you MUST walk adds at least 10 shots alone for me. The greens are pure and you actually are relieved just to get there and make a putt. Add the wind you played in and it becomes a very difficult day. I enjoyed watching you play this course to see some of the same areas I've played into over the years only you recover well. My favorite round on the Black, by far, was when my neice came up from Florida and at age 13 she shot an 82. She was exhausted. (Thank you for the memory, Megan). Her Uncle Fred stopped scoring at the 12 hole... LOL
@ghostshipone

Why does walking add 10 shots??
@julesrabinalek6341

You don't see it on camera but there are serious elevation changes. #4, you go down from tee box and are climbing from 50 yards out the rest of the way. Green is probably 30-50 feet above that first 50 yards, and those cross bunkers are HUGE. #14 you go down 30 feet and then back up 30 to the green. #15 tee is 40 feet below 14 green and 15 green is 50 feet above tee level. #16 tee is 30 feet above #15 green, and 16 fairway is 60 feet below tee level. It's an endurance test. Also, on some of those 450+ par 4s, the fairway is 20-25 paces wide with 3-5 inch heavy rough after a 3' first cut. Given the bunker complexes, few par 4s can be reached from the rough. I only play the whites, and I'm super happy to break 90. I'm a 9.6 index, but my course handicap is 15.

Great round Grant. I played there when I was about a 10 HCP and walked off the course feeling like I went 12 rounds with Tyson. This course will eat you alive. I think I shot like 108 or even worse. Super thick rough, a lot of blind shots, and doing it all after sleeping in the car all night waiting for a tee time. Just happy I can say I played there.

I live on Long Island and have played this course at least 50 times as a scratch golfer. Making that walk back across the street to 15 in nerve recking. Last 4 holes are brutal. My coolest moment in golf is making a 2 on 18 and a bartender coming down with 4 beers there.
@bt2476
@bt2476 7 месяцев назад
Awesome course indeed! But I don't know about the last 4 holes being "brutal". They're somewhat of a reprieve from the rest of it coming in. And that's probably where the course could be a better closer. YES, 15 up the hill is probably the toughest on the course, just a brute. But, 16, 17, and 18, are not too bad compared to the rest. Especially 18 is a rather benign close to a monster of a course, and is very "birdiable" for the pros :) From the 5th hole through the 13th, you pretty much want to cry. Then the 14th is that uncharacteristic short iron par 3, which is gettable. Then they throw the beast of a hole 15 at you. Fun experience to play Bethpage every single time!

The walk is ridiculous. 16-18 may not be tough but after that 5 hour walk up and down hills you are out of energy. And 17 green is very narrow, it’s like 20 feet deep and 70 feet wide. So it’s very difficult to hit the green.

17th is narrow, and a beast if the wing is pushing out. It’s nearly impossible to hold the green if the wind doesn’t backstop for you.

No one is mentioning that this is the host of next year's Ryder Cup? That will be off-the-chain insane. But really, the difficulty on the Black is its length, terrain (greens are fairly flat though), and highly penal rough. And that includes 18 (which I admit is a disappointing end to a total beast), where it's a must to hit the fairway. I lived on LI the first 43 years of my life and only played it twice. The first was in July the year before Tiger won in '02, and it was 104 degrees and we teed off at 3:30! Finished in the dark, and about a dozen empty water bottles later. I was simply stunned at how beautiful the course is.

So great to be able to see a good player on an awesome course. I remember the trouble the PGA players were having the last time they played there. The greens were very difficult to keep their balls on them and putting was tough. The course looks great. You played well considering the wind and some bad luck in the beginning.

If you think the Black Course is tough from where the blue tees were that day, try playing it from the white posts which represent the yardages that are on the card. They never have all of the holes playing from back there for the public. For example, the back teebox on the ninth hole is never used in all of the times I've been there...over 100 since 2003. It's a good 40 to 50 yards farther back. On 10, the card shows just over 500 yards, but the blue tee is rarely any longer than about 480. He played the par 3/3rd hole at 208, but the white post yardage is 230. It looks like he played the 18th from the typical blue tee location. The white post is about 50 yards further back. So if you think it's hard from where he and we the public play it, imagine what it would be like playing it from all of the yardages on the card...7468. With that said, he still had an excellent round.

Help with the plugged bunker shot on 4. After he hit is out of the bunker the video shows it disappear in the rough...just bounced once and dropped to the bottom of the turf. When he goes to hit is, the lie is somewhat ideal and the ball is sitting up and nearly perfect. Am I missing something? I thought perhaps it was a camera angle that did not show a hill but am not seeing that when I review. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Grant, I love ya Buddy, but you've got to know that the great AW Tillinghast designed, "The Black", as we Long Islanders like to call her. I assume you've heard of "Tillie the Terror", and his masterpieces, which include The Black, but also Winged Foot Golf Club, Baltusrol Golf Club, and many others. This is THE video that got me hooked on your channel, watching you play a wonderful round of golf on the crown jewel golf course on Long Island, in our back yard. I'd love to see you make your way out to the other Tillie greats mentioned above, each of which I've played, and for you to also make your way out east to play some of the other Long Island masterpieces, specifically Shinnecock (also played), if they'll let you. Keep the videos coming Grant, can't get enough of them!!

I so enjoyed watching this video, I'm a lifetime Long Islander, raised in Hicksville and Moved to Massapequa and have been a lifelong Bethpage golf course player. When I was in High School and college (70's) we played the Black course all the time because it had the shortest wait time!!! No one wanted to torture themselves, it was harder then, than it is now in some respects. So much easier to lose balls because it wasn't nearly as manicured as it is now. I've Marshalled at 2 opens and the PGA, I love this course but ever since the opens its almost impossible to get a time,

My guess is that you are 70ish. I bet you remember lots of trees that are no longer there. I am 53 and have played 500-600 rounds (all 5 courses) with my Uncle there (73). I notice so many missing and that isnt 1/4 of the ones he that remembers. He says that it is in such better shape than it was 30-50 years ago. He has always told me that we are so lucky to have this place. I started to really realize that 10 years ago....really close for a lot on Long Island (I live less than 10 minutes away), relatively inexpensive and well maintained. I just got back from playing Green. Beautiful day, gorgeous colors
