The reborn Harmony company has put out a number of new models evoking the spirit of the old Harmonys of the past. Made in the USA, this company is doing a lot of things right.
In this video I look at the interesting Harmony Comet, a semi-hollow guitar with distinctive gold foil humbuckers.
As usual, I demo the guitar through my Fender Tone Master Deluxe Reverb, both isolated and with a backing track, discuss the guitar's features, and give my impression of the quality.
CORRECTION: In the video I state that fingerboard is rosewood, a spec I got from the Harmony website. But this is a 2021 model and it is in fact an ebony, board which was available at the time. All other specs are unchanged.

these are smaller body like a 339, incredibly light weight (under 6-lb) and play fantastic. I wish more stores would stock them so folks could try them in person. The pickups are the star of the show though. I've never played anything like them. Very sparkly with great string definition and texture. I wish they sold the pickups by themselves - they would fly off the shelves.

I got one of these in an unexpected trade offer and had never heard of them. Looked them up and became curious. Once I laid hands on it, I was blown away. I don't know how they make them in the US at this price point with these features. Ironically, my least favourite part is the pickups. I'm replacing them with "proper" goldfoils. They're not bad pickups, they just really aren't to my taste (I'm a single coil guy).

Very low production numbers. Meditating on getting one. 🙏🏼 🎸

May not be a 335, but I love that tone! I could listen to that all day long.

Had an old harmony rocket. Sounded great in the studio. But had feedback issues in live situations. They were charming instruments. Sold it.

I’ve never owned one of the old ones but feedback issues don’t surprise me in the least. I have owned Supro and Kay from that era and the pickups on those guitars were microphonic as hell. Couple that with a pretty good size hollow guitar and, well, there ya go. LOL. Thanks so much for watching.

the only issue I had with mine was fret sprout - after 2 seasons and some file work, it's definitely a keeper, a very lightweight one.

Thankfully the one I featured had no issues at all. In fact the fretwork was quite nice overall. But yeah, reviewing guitars I deal with prickly fret ends all the time. Good news is, once fixed, I’ve never seen the problem reappear. Thanks so much for watching.

Leonard, always great playing on each guitar. But, i wan't to ask you a question. I have a Fender Vintera 60's 2 series and i will probably buy another and last guitar. I thought about a gibson usa. Is it a good idea or not ? And, yes this harmony sound great.

Thank you so much. I’m very happy you enjoy my videos. As to the Gibson question, that’s a very tough one to answer. They’re generally doing a good job these days, though absolute perfection isn’t something I typically expect. Little cosmetic flaws are common even with Custom Shop guitars. I think the regular USA line is priced fairly considering the cost of manufacturing in the USA. And all the Gibsons I’ve owned and played have sounded right. The factory setups are more consistent than they’ve been for a long time, but still not always quite perfect in the way, say, most USA PRS guitars are. I would say, if you’ve always wanted a Gibson you’ll more than likely be happy, and they retain value better than most brands. If what you’re after is the sound and feel of a Gibson but don’t care about the headstock logo, Heritage guitars are built really well and cost a little less. I hope that at least gives you food for thought.

@@leonardgriffieblues5845 Aah ok. Thanks for your answer. I will try to see with my seller later. It's not possible for me before June. Perhaps Prs usa. But they are my two first electric guitar and i won't buy another. The choice is difficult but because of most of your quality tests and playing touch on more and more guitars, i prefered ask you about that before. Thank you very much. 😊

Great playing as usual! You say it about the 335, because this is 339 sized? Or because quality is not on pair in your opinion? Or just sounds too different? I like the sound. Interesting your single coil comment as when I first saw the pickups I thought they might be P90 like. I do wish they would make a version of this guitar which was larger a 24.75" scale.
@leonardgriffieblues5845
@leonardgriffieblues5845 3 месяца назад
Sorry if I wasn’t clear. The point I was making was simply that, due to it’s very different construction - no centerblock, carved rather than laminated body, unique pickups - it’s no 335 clone. Nothing to do with quality, the quality is great. But buy it for its own character. There are loads of semi hollows that are basically some version of a 335 or 339, this ain’t one of them. This has its own thing going.
@ltvddvtl
@ltvddvtl 3 месяца назад
@@leonardgriffieblues5845 Oh ok. Got you. This is a good thing in my opinion. Like you said, there are enough 335 clones. But so it has no center block, single-coil-ish sound or P90-is. This is more like a Casino Coupe then than 335 at least on paper? Is it that small as well?
@leonardgriffieblues5845
@leonardgriffieblues5845 3 месяца назад
Yes, it’s pretty small. It actually surprised me how small it is when I got it in my hands.

@@leonardgriffieblues5845 Yes. I was pretty much set on buying one till I found out it wasn't 335 size. Pity.
