The Boston Celtics are one of the most successful teams in the NBA over the last 5-6 years, but they haven't been able to win a championship. Fundamentally speaking, this team is a lot more flawed than you might think which has hindered them in the conference finals and NBA finals. So today, we go over some of the harsh truths of the Boston Celtics and explain why they're farther away from a chip more than you think.

Nah, any coach in the league can do analysis like this if they have time to break it down. It's just that coaches have to make adjustments in real time and also they have to be good leaders so the players will listen.
@desgner_droz8716
@desgner_droz8716 10 месяцев назад
I'm pretty sure the Celtics as an organization or at least someone there already know this, the thing is that the decisions to actually make changes still ultimately lies on the one with the power(money) to trade/fire players and staff and hire new ones. Analysis can only get you so far, this is still a business and sadly just because you know the game and have good analytical skills, doesn't necessarily mean you have the power to act on it. Money is what moves pieces, not intelligence, look at the Knicks for example.

One of the main reasons I was ecstatic about the Kristaps Porzingis trade is it should unlock a new dimension for their offense, not only does he provide infinitely more spacing then Horford (defenses consistently leave him open), but he's a guy that can get 20/10, a player that they haven't had since prime Kevin Garnett. Also opens up Boston's PnR which can help them in crunch time, he's a player who can punish switches routinely which makes it harder to defend Defensively, I thought they really struggled in the PnR this past year, Porzingis was one of the better drop defenders in the league who only allowed 0.78 PPP to the roll man in comparison to Rob and Horford who were exceeding 1 PPP allowed. Also as you mentioned, I expect less switching and them to adapt more into a Bucks scheme with the drop which is what Mazzulla has always liked to do. Overall really good analysis.

Except he'll be on the injury reserve by the trading deadline, and he is a below average defender. Only Boston fans can see the good in that trade. It's like a beaten woman. Husband knocked her brains loose inside her head, but he told her he loved her the night before. They also paid Jaylen Brown WAAAAAAAAAY too much money, while letting Grant walk who was a scrappy, serviceable player. There is also big questions about the coaching staff, and that lockeroom.
@LynxStarAuto
@LynxStarAuto 10 месяцев назад
@@TheGbelcherThat's a terrible argument as well. Y'all make it sound like last year was his rookie season or something. This man is a 6 year veteran! To give you some context, the average length of a star nba players' career is 12 years. He is already at the halfway mark of that tenure. He has already developed into the player he is. The chances that he is going to further develop another level to his game is not very probable. Very few players do this. Players like a Stephen Curry or a Lebron James. But those are once in a generational talents. Which with all due respect, Tatum just isn't. 🤷‍♂️

Great video daniel! Isnt it amazing that even the top tier nba teams still have so much room for improvement? Brown would do well to study how wade and lebron moved off ball during their heat run. One thing i remember from the brad Stevens era is he used to let Rob Williams run the offense sometimes initiating handoffs (he averaged 3 assists as a starter), i think that could really improve the offense: one Jay runs the handoff with Rob, the other Jay cuts from 45 degrees on the weakside

I agree that using Rob in the Draymond Green role would be smart. He's a good passer and much better than Green attacking the rim in space. I think Rob and Horford should play this role shared for 48 minutes. Just the fact that White, Brogdon and Kristaps will provide spacing this year will change our whole offense and I expect it to lead to a lot of dunks and layups.

Since JT and JB came together they have made conference finals almost every year and the finals once. And that's without a true big man. This is the first season they have a versatile big who can help play D on the interior and shoot. Elite bigs have almost always been the reason the Cs lose in the playhoffs. Things should look a little different this season. JT and JB are still so young and I think people forget that they have been winning since they came into the league.

Awesome video! Love the long format deep-dive into a team. Biased for being a Boston fan, but it is interesting to see it broken down of why the C's struggle when on paper they have all the winning assets. They honestly had so many chances that they might've had maybe 3 chips already in the J's Era of the team (possibly under the 3 respective coaches of the past 3 years). The Porz acquisition left a bad taste in my mouth since it meant giving up Smart. Kind of feels like some steps forward with a step back situation. Would have been nice if the initial trade of Brogdon went through, but only time will tell. Have a lot of hope this coming season though! With the Unicorn & now that Joe Mazulla has had a chance to load up his coaching staff with the likes of Sam Cassell & Charles Lee. Getting more creative plays is certainly a must. Maybe Brad will share some of his wizardly plays. P.S. Pink Guy - STFU had instrumental had me rolling lol Keep it up Daniel!

Excellent video 😀 I believe this trade will unlock the Celtics as it really fixes the spacing problems that plagued them the last few years. It will also help not having a rookie coach even though I wish we had a Steve Kerr type that has proved to get ball and player movement from his offense. If Joe can't get them to play the right way, we need Brad to go find us a coach who can. On a positive note, this year's squad is much better balanced as we had too many small guards and too few two way bigs.

Very good analysis. Even though all 3 points are obvious (except to the Celtics' coaches), the video shows a lot more detail than most people know. So, in short, the Celtics has 3 problems: one-dimensional players, one-dimensional offence, and one-dimensional defence. Players are often left to figure out how to play off each other, how to play against the zone, and how/whether to slow down/double-team the opponent's star player in late-game situations. The video also mentioned correctly how the other teams strategized against the Celtics. These problems all point to the lack of coaching quality on the Celtics team compared to other playoff teams. Coach Rick Adelman's Princeton System would be the right fix for the Celtics team.

One thing that no one talks about much and that's hard to figure out is player IQ. If your players are dumb, they're not going to be able to run a more complicated offense consistently. Simplistic offense could be the fault of the coaching staff, but it might also just be a result of players who are athletically gifted but have a hard time understanding how to follow complex instructions.

Well as a Celtics fan you're certainly right that this was harsh, but I also can't really disagree with any of what you've said here. The C's started off last season with a much more dynamic, much more motion heavy offense that used a lot of secondary offball actions under Mazzulla, and that simply faded away after the first couple months of the season before pretty much becoming nearly the exact same offense from last playoffs, and it left the offense much more predictable and easier to counter. Offensively Porzingis should help a lot as he gives the C's a truly dynamic offensive front court threat which the team has been missing for some time now, and while Smart's playmaking will be missed, I can't say that I'll miss seeing teams sag off of him late. If healthy Porzingis should give the team a much needed boost when it comes to trying to break zone defenses alongside Tatum. Defensively I wonder if we'll see the Celtics take some cues from the Heat when it comes to zone concepts, especially as the team seems poised to move away from the switch heavy defensive schemes of years past with Smart gone on top of no longer having a big capable of stepping out onto the perimeter full time(Horford has finally lost enough speed on the perimeter that I wouldn't trust him to switch much in the playoffs, and Rob while a capable defender in ISO situations is nowhere close to what Horford was even 2 seasons ago). Regardless I think the C's did need a shakeup, and Porzingis is it. Hopefully it finally leads to breaking through and capturing banner 18.

Shows how much a good coaching staff matters if Mia had Boston roster Tatum and Brown would have at least one chip no real debate.

Tatum and Brown are taking turns. They are not playing off each other. They should like AD/Lebron, Murray/ Jokic, Steph/ Klay, MJ/ Scottie, Kobe/ Shaq and other historic star duos who make each other better.

Problem with the Celtics: you can't run ball action between their 2 best players. They are similar in size, running screens and dhos for switches doesn't create any advantage.

You're really missing the point with the 1/4 in the ECF comment: they've made 5 ECFs before either of their best players are even in their primes... These players won also hadn't won a championship at 26: Michael Jordan Lebron James Steph Curry Shaq Wilt Chamberlain Hakeem Just to name a few...

@bceltics121 Yep. Somehow making 5 ECF before the age Jordan made his first is a bad thing if you don't win a championship.

They got so many holes yet still one of the top teams in NBA. Hope they fix their offense 'cause relying on the Jays to make plays is not really working for two straight years now. Tatum shows progress on that regard but Brown isn't.

It’s corny but it’s heart imo. Heat trust each other to make their shots and if not they all go back on defense. The coaching has something to do with it spo speaks his mind whereas mazzula is in his first year and still trying to tread the waters. I wish they would’ve kept the team and given them another year I think they would’ve been better but we’ll see how this new team does
