Most of my decapping / depriming is done on the Dillon but there's times I need to pop a primer out. The way I use to do it wasn't really the best and certainly not the way the Lee die was designed to be used. So for my own safety and simplicity I picked up a Harvey Deprimer at a friends suggestion and it's amazing! Whether you need to decap a couple or a couple hundred this things will do the job fast and easy.
Here's where you can find one. harveydeprimer...

I bought one before i got my redding decapping set. I like it for small batches, but go to the press for regular sessions. I agree, it is very well made and the price is reasonable for what you get. Plus the owner is great to talk to as well.

John, got mine the other day and really works easy, very little pressure to pop the primer out, only one issue, it's so hard to find the primer hole on .22-250 cases, seems like I have to fiddle round for a little bit before I get it right. but when I do, bingo,. 👍👍

I've been using one of these for a few years and love it. The only things I wish they would upgrade in the design are the pinch point between the arm and and the deprimer body (meaty hands) and the strength of area where the case head presses against the deprimer body. After a few years and a few thousand rounds of premium brass and range brass, I've probably pinched myself two-hundred times and the edges of the deprimer have gotten a little chewed up. It's probably a user error thing, but still, a tool this simple should outlast a single user, in my opinion.

two advantages of pre-resizing hand depriming are :1 : that you can feel if primer pockets are still grabbing primers strong enough : if it doesnt you may have a die issue and/or cases are nearing their death . 2: when FL resizing , your force on the press lever is only against the case shoulder that you feel you are bumping ( when you stop against the primer with the decapping pin , it pops out and you bang the shoulder without actual control ) . I have been reloading that way in short rrange BR and it served me well .
@planeurable
@planeurable 3 года назад
i use a depriming plier that looks like the Frankford massive tool but smaller and dedicated to small rifle : it was made by Otello Ferrari in Italy . Currently the best one available on the market is made by Alberto Lenzi , available via Bruno Shooters or'Bullet Central in the US .
@FClassJohn

@@planeurable the Lenzi is a nice tool too but I didn’t lie having to swap pins when using different calibers and it’s more than 3x as much as the Harvey. Both great tools but this one fit my needs better there all. Thank you however for pointing it out for others to look at.

John, I've had a Lee deprimer for years & never used it like that. I just screw it into my press & away I go. First time ever I've had problems was with my son-in-laws 223 Rem cartridges made by ADI, (an Australian manufacturer for the Defence Force) whereby the flash hole was too small & jammed the depriming pin. Still though, I want to load in the field so, thanks for the heads up. Seems to work as good as it looks. As always, great vid & thankyou.

James - One of the options from Harvey is a small diameter decapping rod/pin which is for the Lapua cases you mention plus PPC.

I think that is why they come with two pins, because Lapua has really small flash holes. I know I have a dedicated universal de-primer die that i use for the Lapua brass I have because of the small holes.

Hi John Nice tool. I have been using the lee on a small lee press I just use for that and swaging crimped cases. I like to decap and tumble my brass before resizing/trimming. I have had problems in the past with dirt building up on the shoulder of the die and throwing my head space off. Never have that problem with clean brass. Drives my Son nuts. He calls me Martha Stewart. I have a question. What is a good scope for 600-1000 yard scope on a Remington 700 300 Win Mag. Just for target shooting. I don't Hunt. I do all my Hunting at Safeway. I was looking at the Burris Xtreme Tactical XTR II 5-25x50mm. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Great videos. I have learned a lot from you and you are the only one that replies to questions. All the other guy's are to Big to bother with small Guy's. I have had a RU-vid channel for a long time primary Carburetor Restoration. I do have some gun stuff. @br4713
@br4713 3 года назад
Cool stuff, but the case is not aligned with the decapping pin. I use a Wilson neck die with a wood hammer, it is fast and makes no damage to the case since everything is centered. The best method I think would be to use a small dedicated press (like rcbs partner) with a cheap full length sizing die set to not size the case but just to center it while decapping, and the decapping rod set do remove the primer wihout hitting the bottom of the case.
@FClassJohn
@FClassJohn 3 года назад
The case doesn’t have to align perfectly to work well. It just needs to be in the flash hole and the tool does the rest without any damage. I don’t want a second press just for things like this and there plenty of times when in loading on my Dillon and need to pop a primer out and it’s not practical to swap tools heads just to decap a piece of brass. That’s why I use it. Thank you however for the suggestions. There’s always more than one way to accomplish a goal in reloading.
