Howard and Lovecraft always make for the best occult thrillers. Thanks again! Also... I have a humble request. Think it'd be possible to work "The Halloween Tree" by Ray Bradbury into your busy schedule for October??? It's a personal favorite of mine 🎃
“Of his vast collection of strange, rare books on forbidden subjects I have read all that are written in the languages of which I am master; but these are few as compared with those in languages I cannot understand. Most, I believe, are in Arabic; and the fiend-inspired book which brought on the end-the book which he carried in his pocket out of the world-was written in characters whose like I never saw elsewhere. Warren would never tell me just what was in that book…” Keep up the good work and, as always, stay safe!
Thanks for another great video. Nice long story, I must say that I prefer the longer ones. And as always thanks to everyone involved for your tireless effort and great content 👏
If I'm not mistaken the ring and entity are the same ones faced by Conan the Barbarian in the phoenix on the sword! Interesting crossover between a contemporary mythos story and a Conan tale!
Yes, the sorcerer Thoth-Amon is mentioned in two or three Conan stories. I think another one was "The God in the Bowl." I don't think he was ever actually Conan's enemy, but our favorite barbarian was entangled into one of Thoth-Amon's plots by chance.
This was my introduction to Conrad & Kirowan, and now you’ve whetted my appetite for more of REH’s paranormal detectives. Another excellent piece of work from HorrorBabble!
Simply amazing. Howard's way of writing in first-person, but in doing so creates the atmosphere that makes you feel like it's second-person and you're there in the room. Add in Kirowan and Conrad, and it comes off as a Mythos version of Sherlock Holmes. And Ian's narration is the cherry on top of this dessert of a narrative. Bravo!
Question for you Ian, I hope you see this - I have been watching/listening to your videos since maybe 2018 & have consumed every piece of HB content available for years, and I've recently found myself in a financial situation where I can actually help support the channel. My question is which platform is better for you - RU-vid Channel Membership, BandCamp Subscription, or Patreon Membership? Or does it even matter? Let me know! Thanks for everything!!
Thanks for considering that kind of support, Zack! If you like behind the scenes bits and bobs, then Patreon/RU-vidMembership may suit you. If you're just into the audio, then perhaps Bandcamp, as it offers the benefit of high-quality audio. Either way, thanks for the thought. Ian
Outstanding work as always Ian and team! One could argue this is a Conan and Cthulhu hybridized tale. Thoth Ammon definitely gave the Cimmerian his fair share of trouble.
Ah, this Ring is the very same one depicted in the first Conan story -- "The Phoenix on the Sword" -- the Ring which Thoth-amon had lost years before and then suddenly reacquired when one of the conspirators against King Conan, Dion of Attalus, suddenly revealed his "ring of good fortune." Dion says of it, "I had it from a Shemitish thief who swore he stole it from a wizard far to the south, and that it would bring me luck. I paid him enough, Mitra knows. By the gods, I need all the luck I can have, what with Volmana and Ascalante dragging me into their bloody plots -- I'll see to the ring." . . . "Ah, here it is!" He triumphantly lifted a ring of curious make. It was of a metal like copper, and was made in the form of a scaled serpent, coiled in three loops, with its tail in its mouth. Its eyes were yellow gems which glittered balefully. Thoth-amon cried out as if he had been struck, and Dion wheeled and gaped, his face suddenly bloodless. The slave's eyes were blazing, his mouth wide, his huge dusky hands outstretched like talons. "The Ring! By Set! The Ring!" he shrieked. "My Ring -- stolen from me --" REH wrote "The Haunter of the Ring" as a tie-in to his Conan mythos with his own 'Modern-Day' tale of horror, linking the distant Hyborian Age to his Present.
Well, that was very good indeed. I listened to your wondrous performance after a moments research in the supernatural, and then continued my art. Probably not the best things to be doing before bed. I look forwards to strange dreams, maybe they will make a story.
IDK why, probably just luck of the draw, but this one got punted around in my queue for a month while I started and stopped and fell asleep halfway and all, and not because it's boring, it was just a chaotic and weird month... but anyway, I finally just heard it all. And damn was it good!
Splendid! I have 3 books of Howard’s horror and weird fiction but I have not gotten to this story yet and it was a joy to see the notification of your upload!
Hi Nathan -- we've mentioned it before, but the Conan, Solomon Kane, Kull, etc, stories, by Howard aren't necessarily in the public domain. There's a lot of debate on the subject, but given the rules here on RU-vid, it's definitely not worth taking the risk -- sadly!
@@HorrorBabble I have no idea how that works but I'm into the comics and Ablaze publishing started doing really good adaptions of the Howard Conan stories under the title the Cimmerian. Marvel threw all of its toys out of the pram and tried to get them shutdown and stop comic shops from carrying the books. It went quiet for a while but now there back so I guessing the copyright didn't actually apply.
@@HorrorBabble absolutely, no need to take a pointless risk. Its funny though that Marvel are trying to act as if they own the character (he joined the Avengers at one point )when its actually Funcom Norway that are the IP holders to the R E Howard properties.
"Like many women she can't seem to realize the difference between a razor and a butcher knife or a pair of shears." - says the man wondering why his wife is trying to kill him. 😆 Thank you Ian, for the tale!
These stories are hilarious comedy in the 21st century. I swear, I laugh and laugh reading some of REH & HPL stories. Two men who really never understood women writing women is delightful, unintentional comedy. Don't get me wrong. I think REH and HPL are good and innovative writers but there's A LOT of blind spots in their experience that really shows sometimes.
I just fought my way out of a sleep paralysis dream with a giant snake on top of me. It started to bite my face when it was distracted by a rodent behind the couch I was laying on. Either it's "feminine hysteria" or that's what I get for staring at the artwork while drifting off to a snake ring story, which is a good one! I heard a more modern retelling of it somewhere, I can't remember where.
That was fun! Always love a good tale with a taste of the maddening realms of the Mythos! Ian and Horrorbabble crew. A very warm wish for a happy, and prosperous New Year! Love to Warrens widow! 🖤💀🕷🕷🕷
