I review the inferior Haunting movie from 1999.
I had to do extra research to make sure I don't make the same jokes as Nostalgia Critic.

Great fun scary movie and I recently just bought it brand new on bluray from Amazon. I like how Owen Wilson's character has his brother in real lifes first name Luke. I wish he didn't die in this movie I mean REALLY?? Of all people they could've killed off and it was Owen Wilson. I went into this movie thinking he was going to be the hero.

@@euanharrison7125I totally agree and I just recently bought it brand new on bluray from Amazon. I couldn't resist adding this one to my collection. Clearly the scariest part is where Eleanor sees creepy faces of herself in every mirror she looks in and then one of them says "Welcome home Eleanor" which was a good call back to an earlier scene when it's written in blood on the wall and they all start blaming eachother and arguing about it.

And yes.. of course.. years later I found an Original DVD copy of the masterpiece , with commentary tracks from now so many deceased artists, the director of course, actors. . If you can find it, or maybe now on Blu-ray wherever your region is, believe me.. it's one of those collectors items you really should wanna have.

I understand that Shirley Jackson's book certainly predates this but, watching this video, I was reminded of some parallels with Richard Matheson's novel Hell House (1970 ish)....perhaps more in the former parts of the film? (Apologies if this comparison has already been made.) I love RM, and read Hell House before The Haunting of Hill House. Show's my own prejudice that I assumed one came before the other. Female voices in horror writing have not been as amplified as they should have been.

As a fan of Shirley Jackson, I absolutely hated The Haunting and what they did to the story. The real horror of the novel was Elenore's toxic family and her struggle to escape emotionally, which I belive is what manifests the spirits. I think it would've been more interesting to explore that, rather than rely on cheap scares, and ofcourse, the usual evil religious trope. There was so very little of Jackson's novel in this movie. As for movie quality, I have no idea why any of these successful actors took this role. Did they all lose a bet?
