I really liked the show (Full Price for me), but that was something that bugged me. I didn't even know the point of having Harry Potter's ghost in there just for them to completely drop him a few episodes in.
the resolution to me seemed like it was her throwing the glasses in the fire and it turning out it was just in her head and more of a psychological ghost. it seemed pretty clear to me.
@@miker.9138 well he’s not really there and it’s just Dani guilt that’s making her see him, but Dani and Peter kind of mirror in that way were they both went through something traumatic. Peter carries his past with him and it makes him a bitter person, but Dani lets her past go and starts living her life day by day. I think it shows how living in the past can make you unhappy as where living in the present can make you happier
I am obsessed with Haunting of Hill House, it’s family story and the imagery was amazing. Haunting of Bly Manor I feel was a bit repetitive but I really love the opposite dynamics between the couples. A lot of times Bly Manor moments are too repetitive, so I can see how this wouldn’t be someone’s favorite. I see the story behind it that I enjoy, it feels a bit rushed though. Mike Flanagan is one of my favorite directors dont hate me pls.
@@Wandering_Chemist It took too long to get to the point. It was 40 minutes of jumping from scene to scene abruptly. Then in the final 10 minutes you get Peter and Hannah's deaths which finally got the ball rolling. Imo if this season had simply shortened the first 4 episodes down to maybe 1 or 2 and had episode 5 as episode 3, it would've been much better.
Ye overall it wasn't that great, I didn't want to watch a gothic romance I wanted to watch a physiological horror to which it ain't and it was overall boring which is sad because I loved the haunting of hill house
Wasn't Dani's boyfriend not actually a ghost but her own guilty conscience? She hasn't been able to move on for months, and after the whole freak out with Jamie, her burning the glasses was her finally moving on. It's not a great resolution but it is one, and I for one after 4 episodes random freakouts, was glad were moving on from that subplot.
She was literally haunted by guilt. The same way the "uncle" was. Everyone is stuck in the past. The ghost literally so as their dead and can only revisit memories and the living characters are stuck in their own past by guilt or remorse or sadness. Once she let it go of her guilt he went away. The main ghost felt abandoned by her sister and finally by her family. To be so completely abandoned even after death is what caused all the dead to remain there. Once someone was able to accept her despite her grief the same way Dani accepted herself despite her own guilt and grief she was able to let go of her hold on everyone around her. I don't see Dani saving everyone without being able to save herself first.
The only reason why it being her guilty conscience doesn't make sense is because she had physical reactions to it every single time. She clearly literally saw it and even felt it a couple of times. A guilty conscience generally doesn't produce hallucinations and one that severe, even if it does, doesn't simply stop just because of mentally deciding "okay, I'm done with this" and throwing a pair of glasses away. It doesn't really make sense as a guilty conscience or as a ghost honestly, the way they presented it. I do think they presented it to be a representative of her conscience, it just still doesn't make a ton of sense.
Makenshi Critiques interesting. I’m American and it sounded unnatural and distracting for some reason, so I get what they were saying. Not sure why though.
@@ChAn-dv9to Hill House was way better than a lot of shows. I had to remind myself not to grade this one based on Haunting of Hill House, because that's just impossible to match.
To me it's not a horror story per se its a gothic romance. It takes a little while for the audience to figure it out, but once you do it's makes a whole lot more sense. I like this series a whole lot it's 8.5/10.
Up until episode 6 I was just like Corey: I don't hate it, but I could be doing something else right now (I liked episodes 7, 8 and 9 better, but still). And Billy is right on the money: with the ghost with the glowing eyes all I could see was Kevin from Sin City.. xD The only thing I loved in this was the characters of Hannah and Owen. Separately and as a couple. This had so much potential, but poor execution, imo.

About Dani and the ghost of her ex the thing is that it’s not actually him haunting her but her guilt because she believes it’s her fault that he passed therefore when she lets go of her guilt he goes away
Yeah that's what I gathered from that too, but it was still poorly executed. Imo they spent way too little time on that backstory for it to have any major impact. I didn't feel anything for her boyfriend because he had all of what? 2 scenes? There's the wedding and then the dinner before his death. I think her dealing with a guilty conscience was a great premise but you can't really feel anything for her because you don't feel anything for him.
The only episode I really didn’t care for was the smiling doppelgänger one. That shit just did not translate to the screen AT ALL 🤦♂️ once I got on board with it not really being a horror, I thoroughly enjoyed it and was crying by the end... the actress playing Hannah grose is unbelievably talented, I can’t wait to see her in something else 🤞
The doppelganger was confusing. It made me think that the character was dead, especially with all the visual cues that they gave. That part of the story didn't make sense to me.
I was really disappointed with this one. Hill House was spectacular, truly a one of a kind experience with incredible intricate storytelling, and amazing direction. I like bits and pieces of Bly Manor and the setting seemed interesting, but I found myself getting really distracted throughout. Hopefully Flanagan will come back for a full season if there is another one.
Ik even some of the acting was a bit off at some points, it does not compare to hill house at all and it was way too long for the story they were trying to tell it just dragged the overall story and make it one of the most boring stories
"Horror fans are less discriminating than other people." I'm pretty sure horror fans are not gonna like Bly Manor. It's more of a drama/romance than anything else.
I always take offense at the idea that horror "fans" will watch any old shit and like it. Maybe stupid teenagers who go to the cinema to watch dumb PG-13 trash full of jump scares, clichés, and poor CGI aren't very discriminating in their horror watching, but most horror fans I know (including myself) are notorious hard to please. So far as I'm concerned, all of the best horror was made 30+ years ago and it is very rare that a modern horror film can remotely match those high standards.
I loved Hill House, it was scary and emotional. Bly Manor wasn't scary at all and it was so bloated. I liked the side characters and acting for the most part but it wasn't enough.
Hill House was haunted by obvious CGI and a story full of cliches, etc. I watched the whole thing just to make sure I wasn’t missing something. Average stuff.
I liked Hill House, but once the story of the ghosts was revealed, it stopped being scary. Going into Bly Manor, I realized that it might be the same and didn't expect it to be a horror. If you look at it as a horror, you would be disappointed. If you look at it like a drama, like Korey said, I don't think you will be as disappointed.
@@LumumbaKShakur That's just it. I think it was brilliant as a drama. The writing, cinematography and acting were incredible. Once I realized it wasn't a constant horror I just went with it.
@@randalepical6591 Same thing I've heard about Veronica(2017) too. While it was well made and well written, it's still was not the scariest thing at all.
I coin this type of horror as therapy horror. Hill House was all about family trauma and trauma in general going unresolved and the damage that it does to people. This is about literally being haunted by guilt for a lot of the ghost and actual characters. The protagonist was haunted by the guilt of glasses man. The kids were haunted by the death of their au pair and their parents. But they also accepted it and weren't scared by it. Which is why they could interact with all the ghost in the house for the most part. The ghost were stuck there for various reasons unable to move on. Stuck in time. Reliving the past and never moving forward. Even when they damn well should move on. That's exactly what the protagonist in doing as well. What's true for the ghost can also be true for people. And not being able to live your life, being stuck in the same fantasies of the good 'ol days, kind of makes you a living ghost. Or blindly being obsessed with toxic people or thoughts like grief or vanity or status could have a similar effect. One who haunts their own life. No matter how hard you try to cling to those memories they'll fade. The faces of the people you love and the experiences you have with them are just chemicals and electricity stored in your brain. It mirrors the cook's relationship with his mother suffering from dementia quite well. It might not be amazing but I did find it perfectly splendid.
'The ghost were stuck there for various reasons unable to move on. Stuck in time. Reliving the past and never moving forward. Even when they damn well should move on.' Bruh. What do you mean stuck there for various reasons? And why are you saying they should move on as if they were choosing to stay there? They were not stuck there by choice. Anyone who died in Bly Manor was trapped there because of the Lady in the Lake. This was clearly explained in the show. How did you miss that?
Yes that was the primary reason they were stuck there. But with the exception of the little boy metaphorically speaking how they were stuck was by living through they're old memories in different ways. And that's the connection between them and how the living get stuck in time by their grief or by dementia. The ghost literally weren't able to because the ghost in the lake but that wasn't how. Only Peter could try to escape because he never excepted his own guilt in anything. He was a bad person who always blamed someone else for his problems. Hannah was stuck there because she didn't accept her own death and wanted to protect the children. And even so she also just kept reliving her past memories. Henry wasn't a ghost but his guilt kept him in his office the same way the ghost were. You're supposed to think that Henry is also a ghost because he's stuck in a similar way to how it seems the ghost are. For instance Hannah regrets not expressing her feelings for Owen which is why she keeps going through her memories of him. When the children effectively "die" they jump back to happy moments with their parents. Even though they're alive they can't move past their parents death. That's how the ghost who are stuck experience being stuck. The same way the living who are stuck are and that's why the most direct comparison is dementia. Once Hannah is able to move past that she's able to free herself and help. Viola can't move past loosing her child so she condemned herself and everyone around her while she was alive and that continued when she was dead.
The Turn of the Screw has never been very scary, imo. It's one of those subtle, psychological horrors rather than spooky ghost stuff. I really loved THO Hill House, but THO Bly Manor was not as engaging imo. The last two episodes were a complete left turn from the rest. It was still a good watch but not really deserving of your full attention (after a few episodes, I'd just turn it on while I worked on the computer or something). I'm still going to follow Mike Flanagan in whatever he does. Dude makes good stuff.
It wasn’t so much “dropped”...it developed into her romance with Jaimie. Burning the glasses allowed her to finally let him go so she can move on and let someone else into her life.
I like Netflix dropping they shows from 12 to 8 episodes because it get rid of a lot of filler episodes that don't have nothing to do with the real main story
I liked it a lot more than y'all did. But I have to say, when they reveal how shiny glasses ghost got that way, I actually laughed. Thought it was pretty goofy.
Yea, I thought Hill House just kinda dragged on. After awhile I just lost interest altogether. I’m gunna go back and give it another shot though. I need something to feed my AHS fix
Without any real spoilers in a way let me sum it up: all the mistakes they made for the first show they tried to fix in this one. Idk if you can all them mistakes more like questions. And that on to itself made it sort of wack. Also kinda sick of these manors. Can we get a haunted apartment building? Like rarely see that.
@@oscarfc1993 well one of them, and like I said not so much mistakes more like questions, is the explanation of the ghosts within the manor. Once it's really explained it's like: really? Ok... Lol Viola is just an asshole. Lol
Don't watch these for scares ffs ...watch it the same way you watch crimson peak or the orphanage or del toro's Spanish horror flicks. Horror is just used to augment tragic character stories
i agree 100% it has no business being soooo goddamn long it feels drawn out and almost stale at times and honestly if you cut out all those unnecessary parts i think it would be telling this story in a much better and more precise manner. im not saying it's bad or anything but i did feel disappointing and like the show wasnt sure about what it was trying to say and struggled to find its identity. but that s just my opinion
I don't know about critics, I'm sure they're pretentious and loving it like usual, but most of the fan reaction I've seen is that Bly Manor is underwhelming to bad. I don't know where you're seeing a huge positive reaction from fans/common folk.
I did not expect a re-hash of HILL HOUSE. Mike Flannagan is clearly too good a writer to repeat himself that way with the same old formula over and over again that makes shows predictable. BLY MANOR feels very different, and is more of a slow burn. But whereas the first show was about grief and about an evil place as well as a family healing, this second was about love, about a 'found family' and also the process of becoming a ghost. I love both, so very much. But hey--I know people who find HILL HOUSE boring, and others who enjoy professional sports for some unfathomable reason. Different strokes and all that. Me, I loved the characters and the mystery of BLY MANOR and the way it totally subverted all our expectations. The creepy kids who were trying to protect everyone. The sad lady ghost in white who turns out to be a terrifying avatar of pure rage. The presence of ghosts who aren't ghosts but literally creatures of the imagination of those haunted by personal guilt.
I think this ended better than Hill House. I think Hill House was constructed better, but I really enjoyed the story for Bly. It’s as close to a modern gothic horror as we’ve got.
+Sam School I've only seen the a bit of the first episode. I'm Scottish so not the highest authority on English accents, even though my grandad is English. She sounded like she was trying to do a generic Northern style accent, but then pronounced some words like a Southerner. It was a mish mash of weirdness. Some words sounded right, but they were mixed Northern and Southern. I see Americans do this with Irish or Scottish accents a lot. They just mix a bunch of regions into one and hope for the best. They probably aren't even aware that they are doing it to be fair.
@@fuchfred4646 Thanks for the reply Fred, I know what you mean, I work with a lot of UK people, all from the Isle of White to York, and this drove me mad, i'm guess im just to sensetive 😂😂😂, By the way even when UK people try to do the scottish or Irish they mix them up 😂
'It's not a ghost story, it's a love story'. It was summarised at the very end by one of the characters. I did think some episodes were super dragged out, but I ended up enjoying the concept and characters. Some really good performances here.
The way this one was put together reminded me of those old school marandaring BBC drama's, maybe why it did not annoy me as much as others but I did feel at the end that it did feel over done. But I still like these series use of horror as a way of talking about greive and lose, especially as it's something I have gone through over the last 2 years. Also, they was also a little sloppy with the timeline, at times it felt like they forgot that they was showing 80's England..
I had to skip to the very last episode 6 episodes in. It took me 2-3 weeks just to get through the first 6 episodes but after that, I just couldn't take it anymore. This show is soooo BORING!!!😤😩 The only episode and character I liked is the psychic housekeeper. She would have been a better lead for the show than the nanny.
I'm personally really growing tired of the way Netflix presents these shows. Way too much run time. These episodes don't need to be an hour, shit be bloated as fuck for no reason. Give the director 25 to 30 mins an episode and keep it moving. Surprised I even finished this shit fr. Hill House was fire tho.
The Haunting of Hill House was a Better Than Sex. But unfortunately The Haunting of Bly Manor is a reminder of why I never get hyped for things, but it was a significant step down. It was well made, well acted, and had some interesting ideas. There were parts I generally loved and thought was well exicuted. But you could of easily cut two or three episodes out and tightened the story and fill some of the plots out more that were lacking. I give it a bottom of the barrel level Matinee.
Henry Thompsons accents was actually pretty good. I was actually impressed with him because when he has ever sounded like that before. It was ok I think you have trouble paying attention like adhd all shows have padded run times. That is the difference between tv shows and movies
LMAO@ "woman, you are not well, why did you take this job". I fell in and out of sleep so i came to this review hoping you all would tell me how it ends.Oh well i have to watch another however this was very funny. And i agree way too long... I ff thru most of the long long dialogue.
Tho i get where you're coming from, personally i don't mind that every new piece of good entretainment has to say something "new" or feel obliged to add something to other things previously done. I think what the show does, in a way, is reconcilie the old ghost stories, because this show (both seasons) are, on paper, that: ghost stories with a twist. First season was about grief and trauma and this season is maybe more about memory and love and the melancholy that bridges them together. I do feel like the story isn't as tight paced as it was in the first season, and they definetly try to re create some of the "charm" the predecessor did, such as the mid season episode 5 being non chronogical, focused on one tragic character which in turn, opens up and clears a big part of the mystery surrounding the titular house, but in this case wasn't nearly as creepy or tragic or gripping but mostly just sad and sometimes kind of confusing. That said, i think its still a pretty solid TV season worth your time if your looking for a genre piece that isn't afraid to jump between genres more often than not.
Just watched this. If you’re thinking about watching it, do yourself a favor and just begin on episode 5... 4 at the earliest. The first 3 episodes are a complete waste of time.
I got to the fifth episode and it was so *DAMN* boring that I stopped watching. I couldn't feel bad for Dani after that one episode (at least I felt bad for Theo in season one when they explained why she didn't like being touched.) The only characters I actually liked in this season were Owen and Hannah. I honestly connected with Owen because of what he went through with his mom (my grandma had dementia and it got to the point where I broke down). Also, the two kid actors who played the kids were good. If anyone saw the damn season, feel free to drop spoilers for me.
Edmond was just Dani guilt. All it takes is one day to truly move one. Suddenly one you have the epiphany to move on and its suddenly gets easier. Like when someone dies or a break up. Suddenly you wake up one day, the grief is gone and you can live your life with the memories. Sometimes you need a reason to have strength, and that reason can be a person who is willing to open up their doors
I don't think it was bad. But it was harder to follow, slower, and less focused on horror. I get that it is a gothic romance and there were times I really got invested and there were times where I was just painting while it was on in the background. I give it a 6 out of 10
People keep saying its a gothic romance, cool, I like gothic romance but the characters have to be interesting. These characters were not. I didn't care about any of them. Dani was so dry and boring
I loved Hill House. But with this one the Hannah episode and the one where they explain the back story of the lady in the water were the only enjoyable episodes to me. My boyfriend fell asleep A LOT though this one but we had to finish it lol.

An absolute bag of box-ticking shite. I couldn't stop counting how many box had been ticked per episode I forgot the plot.
Dani was boring; she never got to figure out anything the entire season. She put the kids to bed and worried about Flora. Aside from finding a lover...
I actually like it. I mean episode eight was one of three episodes I didn’t care for but overall I dug it. First series was slightly better but I like them equally. I think that television shows isn’t Korey and Martin’s area. Maybe stick to movies that are blockbuster level
Plus this story did drag especially with the 17th century ghost Viola is introduced towards the end and shes the one literally holding everything together.
the first 4 episodes were slow but it finished stronger. Not as good as hill house which i thought was excellent but i wasnt expecting it to be as great.
