Just finished an all-night binge of Bly. It's definitely not as scary or brilliant as Hill House was, but still very good. What threw me off a bit was that it's not as much of a spook-fest as I thought it would be and some of the obviously American actors mangled their attempts at an English accent to the point that it was distracting. That aside it was good stuff: cinematography is on point, the visuals are memorable, the story kept me invested. EDIT: This is one of those shows that you get more out of on a 2nd watch. Coming back to it I noticed quite a few clever easter eggs and subtle details that I didn't the first time round.

I never put any expectation or try to compare with hill house, so as the show this one really really good. The haunting point of this one is memory because haunting doesnt always means ghost (but it scares me the same way). But, somehow I see one same picture with hill house about how memory faded away from the childhood into adult, sometimes you can feel the feeling, the guilt, or the sadness, you then got angry or want to cry but never sure about what really happened. It's B+ for me. Well, never want to compare, because its hits different than hill house hit me. Hill house an absolute A level for me.

Good to know the love story aspect. I had a wrong impression of Crimson Peak because I expected a horror movie while it is also a gothic love story, but watching it with this in mind I loved the movie. For me the first series was in big parts about grief as a subject, love (happy, tragic, or unrequited) as the overarching emotion of this season gets me really intrigued. A must watch for me. I don't think that I will have a big problem with the actors playing different characters, I am so used to that from American Horror Story that I am just stunned by the acting quality in every new season of that show.

Hmmmm... Directed by Mike Flanagan. Time to get my Flanagan checklist ready: - people with sparkly eyes - an oversaturated, red filter on a shot - The kid from "Room" - Ethereal dream sequences that involve space - A strong female lead that achieves empowerment by series' end - themes of addiction and loss - Stephen King-esque ESP in characters - An antagonist referred to by a child-like name - a supernatural antagonist that turns out to be sympathetic/ a protagonist - Spielbergian sense of wonder that then unravels into horror - non-linear narrative, with liberal use of flashbacks - a degloving injury

I disagree with Chris on giving this a B. Maybe A- or just an A. To me it was a gothic romance not necessarily horror so if you came wanting more frights like the first one then it would always dissapoint. They focused on the right thing that is telling a good story which they did! It revealed things in clever ways, the only thing I would say is the series felt a little like it was in a rush to get to the end, compared with Hill House.

Mike Flanagan should cast Vera Farmiga, she is perfect for such series.She was great in 'Orphan' and 'Bates Motel'.I am purposely leaving out The Conjuring series because I think she has much larger range as an actress and those two movies didn't give her enough space to show her range.Mike Flanagan's style is very close to Spanish horror film style.'The Orphanage' and 'The Devil's Backbone' are two of my favorite horror movies.

@AmateurSpaceman
@AmateurSpaceman 4 года назад
I'll give you one: silly and terrible. Over 30 hours' worth of TV, but you won't know the character of Hannibal any better. He's a side character in his own show. They butcher the books, tell them in reverse order, and omit the best one (Silence of the Lambs). They mess with the timeline to the show's detriment, which becomes apparent when they try to tackle Hannibal Rising then apparently give up. The violence, gore, the Will character in particular, and all the serial killings were ridiculous and over-the-top, while the actions of almost all the characters, particularly Crawford, were ridiculously unbelievable. An extremely disappointing and underwhelming show all-around.

@indy-fs6de 3 года назад
Finally got around to watching this after hearing so-so reviews, but glad I finally did. People expecting a fun haunted house ride with jumpscares will be (and have been) disappointed, but this show was more of a meditation on grief and how the passage of time eventually takes all things. Hill House's conclusion put forth the idea that all time is happening all at once, so no one is ever really gone, and Bly Manor posits that everyone and everything will yield to time. My favorite episode was Viola's backstory which was so unsettling for some many reasons. Being locked in that room for so many years, then abandoned by your family, walking the abandoned halls of the home you used to share with them centuries after they moved on, lived their lives, and died themselves, and eventually fading away yourself. That is some existential nightmare fuel that can't be accomplished through a jumpscare.

Definitely Gave me the “The Others” vibe 2001 movie. Bly manor is a great series to watch. But it’s definitely not scary. They went all the way with explaining back stories and how things work in life and what’s beyond that. Like in details!! It’s just too much. They missed the scare factor. It is Halloween season after all. Felt like the trailer was misleading in a way. anyway, acting is absolutely splendid. Storyline is splendid as well. But, Overall it’s just okay. @@aaronshouting588 It's not confusing. Have you ever seen Quantum Leap? It's essentially like that, minus the body jumping. We see them as the same actors and actresses, but in the universe they're in, they see each other as completely different people.

Just finished binging it. Honestly i had to force myself to keep watching it through the first episodes and if it hadn't been for how much i like hill house i would have dropped it. It wasn't until the last episodes that I really found myself interested.

Did anyone else get a little annoyed with all the time jumps? Especially the episode that went more into Mrs. Grose story? she was fantastic in it, but I thought it got a little old when it kept jumping into a different period of time every time she walked through a door into a different room. I know hill house did time jumps but that was primarily from kids to adults and the jumps in time were separated by decades. Here the jumps in time are divided by mere months or maybe a couple of years when everyone still looks the same and mostly wear the same clothes
@MekintoshLarja

@ShaunMyric1978 she is trapped in memories because she's MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD also dead and doesn't know it - that's why it keeps jumping so much from memory to memory

Lmao, I think they're supposed to be representations. Bly Manor didn't exist, Flora's name isn't actually Flora, etc. She was telling a story and "memories fade". That's how I perceived it anyway. If that's not the case, then you are absolutely correct.
