Megan Fox is not really that hot IMO. She is average at best, you see hundreds like her every day and pass them by completely flaccid. Put them in a hollywood movie and all of a sudden they get quickly pedestalised. Michael Bay's movies were the same whether she was involved or not. Like when he replaced her for someone hotter and nobody cared or noticed.

This movie had a lot of nuance regarding Jennifer and Needy’s relationship. The irony is in Needy’s name being for the wrong character- Jennifer has a crush on Needy and NEEDS her. She just can’t figure out how to confess without ruining her image. It’s tragic and kind of beautiful.
@toadtongue
@toadtongue 3 года назад
@TheRapper10000 I think they both do. Needy wants Jennifer's confidence and appeal, Jennifer wants Needy's love because she's never really received the kind of love Needy gives her. So I think both Needy and Jennifer were in love with each other.
@thebinlgbtisbabadook7832
@thebinlgbtisbabadook7832 3 года назад
@@toadtongue YASSSS. They were in love in a very toxic, abusive, codependent way, though. But unlike those YA Wattpad Romance Fanfics like After and 50 Shades of Grey, theirs can potentially be fixed because (except for the supernatural elements) it is realistic and the toxicity was never romanticized. Instead of romanticizing a toxic codependent relationship, the film showed how it can ruin friendships and the people surrounding them. How everything could have gone differently if Jennifer and Needy just confessed their feelings for each other and not repress it by sleeping around (Jennifer) and getting a boyfriend you don't love that much (Needy) to convince themselves that they are not lesbigay for each other. To prove to their egos that they never enjoyed their boyfriend-girlfriend game... when in fact they always do. Imagine if they got together and turned their relationship to a healthy one before Low Shoulder went to their town. Jenn wouldn't have the desire to hookup with Nikolai because she's content with Needy. They wouldn't be at the bar in the first place. Then Jennifer wouldn't have been sacrificed and Needy wouldn't need to kill her. They would've graduate high school. They would have gone to community college at least and made their way into the world. But nope. Instead they hurt each other over and over. And made us cry with their tragic love story.

@thebinlgbtisbabadook7832 3 года назад
Draconic Ruby, your "tragic but beautiful" reminded me of that one guy who suggested that the film's Through The Trees theme song has 2 points of views. Most of us listen to it and see it as Needy's song to Jennifer. But he suggested we listen to it and see it as Jennifer's song to Needy and suddenly the meaning changes and weight becomes heavier. Tragic but beautiful indeed.

It’s kinda fucked up how many comments are fetishizing a possible lesbian relationship between the two instead of just seeing that it’s a toxic friendship. You can have love in a friendship and want love that’s platonic. I swear to god the amount of people online who immediately call gay when characters of the same sex are close in mind-boggling. Diablo Cody never intended for Jennifer and Needy to be gay towards each other. And yeah Needy did love her boyfriend.

She HAD to go for these kinds of roles because that's all people wanted her for, otherwise she wouldn't have been able to start her career. And then once she was established as even having ONE role like that (her most memorable to most) Hollywood didn't want her doing anything else. It's so hard for women to not only establish themselves in the film industry, but to be able to have an evolution in the type of roles they have. She was typecast, she didn't have a choice. If you seriously think she had enough power to take any role or do anything you're willfully ignorant.

To me, Needy gaining some of Jennifer's powers after defeating her is symbolic of becoming stronger after leaving a toxic relationship. There's so much commentary in this film that is made subtly, and a lot of it you actually discover after watching the film several times. So much to discover and think about each time you watch it. That's what a great film should do.

Your commentary is so interesting - I hadn't even considered the angle of: she gets her victims because she's not seen as a threat. I do disagree with your angle on Needy and Jennifer's friendship; I think it goes a lot deeper than jealousy. I think there's also possessiveness and co-dependency there, a very very complex exploration of female bonds. I've adored Megan Fox and Jennifer's Body from the beginning and watching people dismiss her so hard then was really, really frustrating. There is some redemption now but it still feels bitter sweet that suddenly everyone's a retroactive advocate.

I actually feel kind of bad for Fox's character. She was kinda bitchy and self- involved sure, but before she was killed she wasn't exactly evil. She was kidnapped and murdered by a group of men, and forced to become a flesh eating succubus to stay alive. Honestly, it's kinda tragic what happened to her and I'm glad Needy got revenge in the end. I just wish we got a moment to show us that Needy understands what Jennifer has become is no longer the 'real' Jennifer, and that her actual best friend died that night with the band. It would add a little more depth and sympathy regarding their friendship. I do wonder why Jennifer herself didn't think about getting revenge, though. Would she have seen it more as a 'gift' since she dug her abilities later on?
@megimihaylova98
@megimihaylova98 3 года назад
YES I agree with you this is my opinion, but I don't think that revenge was on her mind. She was a victim of circumstance. She was what teenage girls were expected and portrayed to be- vapid, shallow, beautiful, and empty. After she revives, she is seen just satiating her hunger since that's all she can think about. She is mourning her loss of youth/beauty/life especially seen in that scene where she rubs foundation on her face. She didn't get to that stage where she wanted to go after them, she was focusing on survival. I'm not sure about her abilities being seen as a "gift" since she's seen heartbroken not knowing what's happening after her transition to then at the end of the movie she sees that this has ruined her relationship with Needy. Her friendship and the romantic plotline also play into this. Needy idolized Jennifer's beauty, status, and their bond. I believe that Jennifer was in love with Needy but it all was toxic and codependent. Jennifer does go through all of the stages of grief ending in her acceptance that the only way to survive is to eat men (she can also eat/feast or whatever word you would use on women, but men were the ones that objectified her and sacrificed her). Not only did the men ruin her beauty (the societal currency that made her feel valuable and seen) but Needy stabs her in the boob in the end, thereby scarring her and lowering her "perfect" beauty too. Needy supported her through everything, so she's almost surprised that Needy would harm her like that since she complimented her beauty in the beginning. When Needy says her heart (when she replies to J saying her boob), you can see how that toxic relationship is over, not only did Needy hurt her body but she also severed their bond. She's definitely scarred and will have this memory and trauma for her whole life, but she is freer now without her. wow I couldn't stop typing lol this is one of my favorite movies so I hope you understand this is just my enthusiasm showing haha

Men will never understand it. Go look at some interviews with Megan Fox, and see how she was objectified in interviews. Interviewers asking her to do a strip tease, or telling her how much they’d like to have sex with her, or making jokes about how dumb she is. It was relentless, and men at the time were acting like a fucking animal in heat, and not only disregarded her feelings, they actively disrespected and hated her while simultaneously wanting to fuck her, because they knew they didn’t have a chance. I’ve had very attractive friends, and I don’t think you realize how much it fucks with your head. People adore you to your face, everyone wants to befriend you, but then men are always trying to manipulate you and get in your pants, and women start rumours and backstab you. You have trust issues. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that my friend today shaved off her hair and covered her body in tattoos. Once in a while, she’ll get an angry message on Facebook that she “used to be hot” and that “she ruined her body”. As if her body only ever existed to be some man’s fuck toy.

Megan Fox did an interview on a late night talk show (Jimmy Fallon?) where she talked about her first role, dancing in a bikini under a waterfall when she was just 15. Megan Fox (Jennifer) and Amanda Seyfried (Needy) have both said this is their favorite movie of their respective filmographies. To prepare for her role as a possessed living-dead teenager, Megan Fox lost around 15 lbs, bringing her weight down to a near-frail 97 lbs, and stayed out of the sun. The title is from the song "Jennifer's Body" by Courtney Love's band Hole. Hershey's chocolate syrup was used for Jennifer's 'black vomit' scene along with the use of CGI-animation. Colin invites Jennifer to "Rocky Horror at the Bijou," a reference to a student-run movie theater at the University of Iowa. Diablo Cody graduated from the University of Iowa. Anita Lesnicky's nickname of Needy comes from writer Diablo Cody's initial intention to have the character be of a 'needy' disposition. She later decided against this as she felt she had seen enough nerdy stereotypes in high school set movies.

If there's one thing that I'm loving here -- apart from the fact that Jennifer's Body is, finally, getting a good review -- is that GINGER SNAPS is being mentioned in the comments. That trilogy is so unfortunately underrated and has yet to get the love and respect that it truly deserves. I, myself, only know a few people who've seen it, and mostly because I've recommended it to them ... My favorite scene was the one where they were sleeping in the snow and the camera view was on top view and Gin's red cloak enveloped in Bridgette's black cloak was a complete contrast to the vast white snowscape. I hated the fact that they showed the kiss in the trailer. It wasn't meant to be this titillating thing. The whole point was to show how the lines between friendship and something more is very so often blurred when it comes to teenage female friendships, and that is absolutely spot-on. I saw this in theaters with my bff and we both loved it and could relate to it a lot. It's a shame it was marketed towards teenage boys when it was made specifically for teenage girls, Karyn Kusama said that herself. I'm really happy it's finally getting the love it deserves. @@zombieedrea Yup and what's worse, is most people see Ginger Snaps, Mean Girls and The Craft (the original) as "shallow high school films" even by young girls themselves, when these films are so much more. Ginger Snaps deal with the pains of growing up, of puberty, of transforming from a girl into a woman. Mean Girls, for example, is actually a social commentary on tyranny and dictatorship (RU-vid channel The Take, formerly Screenprism, did a videoessay film analysis about it). The Craft, on the other hand, is about how teenage girls deal with suicidal tendencies (Sarah), sexual abuse (Nancy), racism (Rochelle), and body shaming/physical insecurities (Bonnie), which are heavy topics considering the fragile psyche of growing teens coming-of-age in a judgmental society. I am not sure about Clueless though, because I haven't watched it yet.

I saw Cherry Falls in the Cinema in England when I was about 16. That film had a big release in England. I was so shocked to hear that it didn't make it to a cinema in America though. And also? I liked Cherry Falls. Still not seen Jennifer's Body - but I will now. Also, love that you're doing more film reviews more often now. I was particularly chuffed that you reviewed "Wolf" and "Mothman Prophecies." Just as a (post Halloween) suggestion - "2010 - The Year We Make Contact." I had no idea that 2001 A Space Odyssey had a 1980s sequel starring Roy Scheider (and many other exquisite casting choices.) In some ways I didn't even believe that forgotten gems truly existed in film, but they do, it turns out. Also 2010 is directly (and loyally) based on Arthur C Clarke's sequel book. The director of the sequel got Stanley Kubrick's full blessing. The director wrote the screenplay for 2001 and was a producer on the original also. Anyway, I'll shut up now 😂🤦 I've watched it almost ten times since I bought it a month or two back. I feel like it's the sort of film "Arrival" and "Interstellar" wish they were.

I remember the trailers for this movie. They definitely were the main reason I didn’t see it but there was one moment that genuinely made me laugh. It was a dialogue exchange between the two leads where one said: “I will finish you if I have to.” And the response is: “Ok... you couldn’t even finish gym class.”

I remember seeing this in theaters. I thought it was going to be garbage. It's one of my favorite horror films of that decade

From the first time I saw this movie I thought it was good and holy shit they are so right in describing how they wanted to market it. Feel so bad for what we all let them do to Megan Fox. It seems pretty much no one stood by her when everything happened between her and Michael Bay. Talk about an actress being treated as nothing more than a sex symbol and everything acting like it was fine

It's crazy how similar my experience was with yours in terms of appreciation of it. The first time I saw it was like a year after it came out and I still had the lingering idea of what it would be from trailers and ay first was a little disappointed by it. But something with it stuck with me and I watched it a year or two later and watched it for what it was and really enjoyed it and in the one or two subsequent viewings since have continued to. I've gotten a few people to check it out also who were very put off from the marketing but they both ended up loving it while going in with as much of a fresh mindset as possible

Jennifer bit Needy, that's why she gained the power.

Chris mentioning Brittany Murphy while talking about Cherry Falls reminded me that she's been dead for years now.😟

I remember when this movie came out. I was still in high school. Yeah I watched it because I was a teenage boy and I had jacked it to Megan Fox more than a few times. Even then though, I actually did like the movie. I liked Needy and I always felt so bad that she had to lose her best friend and her boyfriend and it was a satisfying ending to know that she avenged them both.

It has the same template as Abby and Ginger Snaps and Carrie (the first one), but I think it's ahead of its time in a sense that during the decade (2000-2010) it was released there was no US/Canadian horro-comedy film (with female empowerment undertones) that was made that is about the complexities and power play of toxic, abusive, codependent female friendship between two closeted bisexual best friends who are secretly in love with each other, with a script written by a bi-curious woman (Diablo Cody) and one of the leads played by a bisexual woman (Megan Fox). Most queer love story at that time were in Rom-Com form (Imagine Me & You, 2005) and Drama form (Brokeback Mountain, 2005), and erotic form that sometimes border on softcore porn. 😅

I watched this movie back in 2014 and I really liked it and started searching for similar plot movies. There I found the movie "all cheerleaders die". Jennifer's body really opened a new genre to watch.

Poor Megan!! I love her and most of her movies!! She deserves better! Fun fact: when Transformers 2 came out with the game to accompany the movie, they had the actors and some of the developers play online together with fans. I ended up running into Megan Fox on there and we played together for an hour almost. She really cool and sometimes she says some wild stuff. But she's a sweet girl, she also told me her nickname! It's Bird!! So shout out to my homie Bird yo, I miss you girl!! 😁
