One of the best jump scares EVER. It had plot impact AND it was terrifying.
@ianwestc

This is basically the only time I like these sorts of "jump scares" which make up 90% of crappy horror films. It works here.
@AWSVids
@AWSVids 5 лет назад
Jump scares get a bad rap, I think. Like any filmmaking element, it's just a tool, and can be a very effective one at that, because it forces you to viscerally engage in what's happening on-screen. It grabs your attention and highlights the event. I mean, just look at how much it affected Nikki and Steve here. They literally had to pause the show to think about it and process/calm down. If a storytelling tool can have that effect on the audience, then it's a great tool. The problem is when it's overused or used to highlight something that's not important or not interesting. When it's the only "scary" thing about a supposedly scary movie, then it's not scary, it's just startling. You jump, but then you quickly recover, shake you head and move on, because there's not much to think about other than "Oh, that startled me." This one was genuinely scary because we're engaged with these characters in deeply horrifying situations and ideas, so when we see the dead corpse of Nell appearing in ghostly form, looking utterly angry/sad/every-bad-emotion, combined with what we know about her and what's happened to her... it all comes together into one sudden moment of scary ideas that just overwhelms you, and it wouldn't be as highlighted without the jump scare. If they had just quietly seen Nell in the back seat or on the road, shaking her head or something, then you might get the point, but it wouldn't be nearly as effective. You REMEMBER this moment because of the jump scare, and FEEL the meaning of it much more viscerally as a result. I also love how the approach to the scene kept you interested enough that you're just wanting to hear how this argument unfolds, so the last thing you're expecting is a jump scare. Oftentimes, you feel a jump scare coming a few seconds before it happens, because they make things intentionally quiet and still right before it, because they think that'll make it more impactful... but it actually just gives it away. Audiences know that's the classic formula for a jump scare, so it doesn't work very well anymore. The right way to approach a jump scare now is to have it just suddenly HAPPEN like this one did. Preferrably in a scene that already felt like it had a purpose even before the jump scare. As opposed to scenes that seem to be obviously building to a jump scare by stretching out long quiet moments of people looking around a corner or something like that, and you're just waiting for a jump scare to happen the entire time... again, because audiences know the formula. We're also doubly thrown off by the similar scenes between Steven and Hugh that unfolded before without a jump scare, so we're just expecting the same type of scene from Theo and Shirley. So it's all about the context. If the scene is bad and just relying on the jump scare to make something... ANYTHING interesting happen... then it's the scene that sucks, not the jump scare. When the scene is good, and then you throw a jump scare into that's well-placed and executed... it's magic. Terrifying, horrifying magic.

The fact that there was actual reason for it (you two stfu) other than shock value, gives it a pass. I paused that shit and went to go to the dishes. Needed a break lol. I'm glad no one else was home, because me shouting, "Fuck!! Fuck no!" might have raised some questions. Actually, I think I shouted "Fuck you!" at my screen.

@@AWSVids Agreed. The timing helps as well. So many times in other movies or tv shows it comes off as gimmicky, it's not that scary, or the timing is off. This show is a great example of how to use them effectively.

Lol that jumpscare. Fun Fact: (even though I am sure someone has already said it.) The actress that plays Nell was told to pop out way before the script said too, that look of terror and confusion on Theo's and Shirley's actresses faces is legitimate fear.

Sorry, I suspect that's the publicity department at work. Notice the cut from one side to the other? If that was done in one take, the two cameras would be visible to each other. So at least one side was acted.
@scyphe
@scyphe 3 года назад
@@commandosolo1266 You can easily see that the camera angles aren't 90 degree angles from each side. They're placed outside the car on each side, ahead of the characters and angled as you can see in that scene. If there were just a single camera to the left and then the right side in that position the characters wouldn't be horizontally parallel to each other. Redo your analysis of the scene. ;)

I'm so glad you paused it after that scene to regroup because the speech from Theo after is one of my favorite moments in the whole thing. Nell is just always trying to make them stop fighting, which is really heartbreaking.

LOL poor Nikki. That jump scare gets everyone. The first time I watched, I was already on edge because I watched the whole series in one sitting from 7 PM to like.... 5 AM and I thought I was going to have a heart attack. The next episode is my favorite and I think that since you guys are parents you will really respond to it. I got chills when Hugh revealed that the tree house wasn't real and neither was the man with the handlebar mustache. How great was that scene with Theo and Shirley after Nell's ghost scared the crap out of us? At first I thought Theo felt "nothing" from Nell because of death but that was how Nell felt, her depression made her an empty shell and that's heartbreaking. I felt sad for Luke at the house because he worked up a lot of courage to burn it down and then it didn't work. LOL when the fire went out, that kind of made me sad for some reason.

I literally levitated off my bed watching this episode with that beautifully done and terrifyingly well-crafted jump scare. Best use of the tool ever. May have also had to possibly use my inhaler. Probably. The whole inhaler. Absolutely. Edited to add: When Nell "came home", the lights are white and her Mom's dress is also white. When Luke "came home", the lights are red and his Mom's dress is also red. More like the Red Room's terror sort of type vibe rather than Nell's white wedding vibe. I didn't catch that during my watch through and it wasn't until Steven mentioned the lights that it clicked for me! Also, Theo's speech, just ugh my heart. I wonder if what Theo felt was because Nell's spirit is trapped with the house? The bang was also for the two sisters who experienced it in the house that night Shirley thought that Theo was the one banging on the wall. This show is AMAZING and such a masterpiece!

That jump scare must be quite dangerous for people with heart conditions. When I first watched the show (I binged it over 2 days) I was as unprepared as you guys were and I'm pretty certain my pulse jumped to 200 bpm. Btw, Nikki should get a special scare cushion/pillow that she can squeeze/hit/hold when the tension becomes so strong that it's almost unbearable (this show is masterfully crafted and there are few haunted house movies/shows that manage to keep the tension while also telling a very compelling story about how a family fell apart with each character having a unique perspective and the issues from their childhood that stayed with them for many many years. It gets a 9.5/10 from me.

LMAO!!! I literally lol for a whole minute, maybe going on two - after that jump scare. I had to pause the video just so I wouldn't missed anything more. Then, of course, I had to watch it again. LOL! You say why would Luke go into the house after it lit up? I feel that the family had lived with this terror - on some level - for decades. There's gotta be a point that you get so sick of it, that *nothing* scares you more than not dealing with it. Luke reached that point. I felt the same way about Negan & the Saviors. lol Awesome, spectacular reaction! :-) ♡

Perhaps my favourite episode of the series! One of 4 episodes which I regard as masterpieces. And yes, that was Poppy Hill.

People always call out that Jump scare, and rightly so, because it is one of the best jump scares ever executed in all of TV and film. However I like to focus as much attention (if not more so) on Theo's monologue afterward. Seriously, it is one of the BEST written and BEST acted monologues I have EVER witnessed.

Steven is so sweet!!! “Do you wanna go check on the kids?” = euphemism for “Do you need to go change your panties?” 🤣 Poor Nikki!!! I knew that was coming and I was thinking, okay, brace yourself, Nikki’s not gonna do well with this!!! Love how Steven was like, okay, PAUSE! Like, right away... ❤️💜❤️

Best jumpscare ever. I was eating and concentrated in the conversation. I literally jump and scream with food in my mouth. I pause that and calm myself. I watched it yesterday for the first time.

i still find it so surprising that so many people (i'm not talking about nikki & steven) can't seem to see anything from steve's point of view. he was the only one who saw what was happening to his mom when they were kids, he was the only one who ever read the police report which very much points to his father having hurt his mom, and he had a lot put on his shoulders at a really young age. he even went to meetings with his dad and his lawyer and he saw his entire family crumbling, which he believes could have been prevented had his mom just been treated properly. what he did to leigh is inexcusable but everything else is understandable when you really look at things from his point of view. (plus i mean come on, he's written based off the first stage of grief (denial) and people are surprised he's close minded.

totally agree with you. If you compare young Steve to old Steve you can see so clearly how his mother's death changed him. When Theo was told that Nell is dead she told Shirley to be honest with her children about it. Steve's father wasn't. He didn't tell them anything. It's only natural that Steve doesn't believe anything anymore and is in denial 24/7.
