Surprisingly, it didn't get me. Though, in all honesty - I was pretty tired, when I watched that episode the first time, so my reaction was somewhat "delayed". And of course, once you know it's coming... I can't think of another ("worse")jump scare right now. But of course I had my heart skipped a few beats in my life, due to some jump scares. The only one I can think of right now (though not the "worst"), is the girl in the closet in "Ring". Though I'm not sure whether that counts as a legit jump scare.
when yall finish the series you have to watch on yt all the ghosts that you missed throughout the show its insane how many ghosts are in the background and i dont think yall have noticed any so far
When I was much younger, I definitely remember the first season of Supernatural having some very scary stuff like asylum or something, but if I would watch it now, I don't know if it would hold up. Xfiles the same, don't remember the episode name but they were in a forest and there were cocoons with dead people in them. As it stands, I think THOHH is a horror TV show perfection. Since I saw it, it has not been topped by anything else for me and I am a horror genre lover. THE jump scare gave me a heart attack and made me shiver for many minutes. I hope something like this comes around again.
hugh's lines "no no, not him, the man repairing the clock" and "i never built you kids a treehouse"! two record scratch moments back to back, LOVE them
And usually you'd be like how did he remember an insignificant detail like one repair guy but then he wrote an entire book about it. Probably tried his best to remember what he could to his best and then some while writing it all down.
"I was born 90 seconds before Nell, but she was always my big sister." is such a great line and it gets me every time. Similarly, Mr. Dudley's monologue about the house and its effect on his family is one of my favorite scenes in the entire series. The writing in this show is just so good.
51:15 It frequently gets lost after that amazing jump scare, but Theo's speech here is one of the best of the entire series (and that's saying a lot). And the biggest thing I took away from it was the difference between "not feeling anything" and "feeling nothing." Everyone has always wondered about what's after life but in that moment, Theo felt what nothingness could be like and that is frightening.
even in death nellie tried so hard to get their attention and get them to stop fighting and -listen- to each other. no matter how many times i’ve seen this show, the writing never fails to get me; the writing and cinematography are both beyond impressive in both hill house and bly manor.
@@NotEnoughBooks it scared me at first, but when i realized she just wanted to help them communicate and listen it made me so goddamn sad. i connect with that a lot, as a kid that frequently gets forgotten about or steamrolled over in conversation, i just can’t commit to throwing myself out of my chair like she flipped her casket LMAO
I love reactions to that scare. You see the whole spectrum of what people do in a panic. Fight, flight, freeze. I saw one guy once who didn’t seem to react- his eyes just kind of widened- but he paused a minute later saying his heart was beating out of his chest. Best frozen in fear reaction I’ve ever seen. But the ones where people basically try to leave the room like Oak are the best. 😂😂😂
I love the parallel between the darkness the Teo felt once she touched Nellie, and the mold in the house. "It spread". For me is a clear analogy to depression.
That was my interpretation too. The nothingness that Theo felt when she touched Nell's body was depression, Nell was so far into it when she died that she felt nothing.
@@raphaa16 Yeah, could be that too. Could be a combination of both actually. My mind immediately went to depression, because I have history with it. But I love your interpretation just as well, be cause the mold spread till it consumed the whole house, just the way the evil in the house consumed all the joy and the lives of the Cranes.
Also a permeating rot that was ‘painted over’ and down in the bones of the house. Down in our bones, waiting to blossom if given the right conditions. Causing harm to house and it’s occupants and for what?
I have to admit that I scoured reaction channels after I watched that episode in particular because I wanted to see other people suffer that same jumpscare, it got me so good
As you've said, the house is like a character, like a great big sleeping beast. Remember Luke's monologue when he had 90 days sobriety? He would wait for his mom and watch the cars pass: golden headlights were hope, red taillights "taking hope with them." In episode 4, the house lights up a warm gold for Nell to lure her in, showing her everything she would dream of wanting. With Luke, the house lights are red, hopelessness, and he sees the truth of the house inside. A very cool tie in that I just love.
I loved Theo’s monologue so much. Especially when you think about how it’s technically her job to rationalise feelings and make sense of them but you could see how shaken her own mind was and how she couldn’t really vocalise what she felt after touching Nell.
I love the details about the house defending itself - the screwdriver the wife holds at his throat is the the same one he used on the door of the red room. So many scary elements in this story.
I never really got that. Doing a fertility test on a man's semen is so easy, it feels like it would be one of the first things you checked just to cross it off the list.
The brilliant thing about that jump scare in the car is that for one, it's not a cheap jump scare. It's been established already that Nellie does something every time they are fighting, to make them stop. It had an actual story relevant purpose. And two, the whole show is set up to make that moment work. There has been a lot of dialogue, story heavy segments so you're focused on the conversation between Shirley and Theo. Also the jump scares are infrequent enough in the show in general that you aren't constantly expecting them like you would in other things, so your guard is completely down. I generally hate jump scares, not because they're scary but because they are so often just lazy writing. This is how you do it right.
Fun fact the scene were Nell popes out in the car that was the girls genuine reactions they told the actress who played Nell to start acting before her q so they can have genuine fear and it worked also the scene with Theo breaking down still gets me 😭 this cast deserves an award
The actress for Theo (Kate Siegel) is the wife of the creator of the show (Mike Flanagan) - she appears in other shows of his as well, and she did a phenomenal job acting there after the car scare scene. This is why I love this show - it's a great horror show, but it's SO much more than that. There is no other horror show/movie/story that had me this invested in the characters - the character development here is just amazing.
I love a good jumpscare, but episode 8 has gotten EVERYONE who's ever seen it. It's the equivalent of 2 siblings being petty with each other, and the third sister stepping between them and going "Knock it off, dummies!" I love Nellie so much!
I was totally waiting for there to be something in the back of a car at some point because they kept showing backseats, but it still felt like my heart dropped into my stomach.
The dad is my favorite character, especially with Timothy Hutton playing the role, so I’m happy you’re at these episodes now. I love when he starts dropping reveals left right and center, since he’s the guy with so many of the answers we’re waiting for, and his acting is spectacular.
not in the same episode but I think the scene where Shirley and Theo hear the knocks on the front door is a great mirror to a scene showed before with both of them hearing knocks at the house when they where kids. the ending is also a subtle but really well put connection to Luke's episode. the car jump scare always takes me by surprise no matter how many times I see it 😂.
Is the Oak ok after that scare in the car? Scare was so good it made him speechless, lol. They do the jump scares the best, mostly because there're only a few and they're not where you expect.Theo's monologue on the side of the road is one of the best monologues in television history, right up there with Luthen's speech in Andor. Theo is my favorite, both young and older are so talented. I can not wait to see your reactions to the finale!
I rewinded the jump scare scene like five times lol😂 so funny. Perfect how they get you when you’re so engrossed in the dialogue so you’re listening closely and BOOM NELL’S GHOST in the backseat. Epic.
I watched this show shortly after my brother died, it was so triggering, but it was also cathartic and therapeutic. I think that horror allows you the right to feel and to not be ok. It gives you the right to face reality and not be fake and false, as our grief makes others uncomfortable.
The epic car jump scare, mixed with some of the best revelations in dialogue. I really love Mr. Duddley's monologue and the dad's conversation with Steve in the car. And despite my heart being a mile a minute, I still felt immensely for Theo, and seeing Shirley reach for her hand melted my heart. Your reaction was priceless. Excellent commentary, as usual.
For episode 8, I was so nervous about something happening that I couldn't relax the entire episode. But the conversation between Shirley and Theo in the car was so compelling I got lost in the dialogue and let me guard down. When Nell did her jump scare, it scared me so bad I actually cried.
I WAS WAITING ON THIS!! I love your reactions so much, and the jumpscares are great! About to watch the whole thing and enjoy this, I am even making some popcorn!
What’s amazing about this show is that you start in one place and you end up in a completely different place. It’s a love story to dis functional families everywhere. I absolutely love this show. Great reaction to this guys as always.
This is the one episode that everyone was waiting for. Best jump scare ever LOL. Can't wait to see the next two. This show is so smart. I wish we had more content of this level.
The way you share your collective analyses after each episode (or after each movie that you watch) is what I'm here for. It's fascinating to see which elements each of you focuses on (whether it's specific character mannerisms or camera framework), and your commentary truly provides a much richer experience than just the show. A lot of reaction channels are just collections of vapid knee-jerk reactions and "captain obvious"-type commentary, but you articulate your observations and theories so well. I'm really happy I found your channel. That Episode 8 jump-scare was brutal, but you all handled it like champs. 🙂
I love this show, how it gives you little pieces to keep you hungry and guessing and how satisfaying and rewarding it feels when you finally get more pieces and put together parts of the story. I love how you all where sucked in by Mr Dudley's monologue, first time I watched it I felt goosebumps at first because the smile was creeping me out, and then just because I felt so so bad for him and Mrs Dudley. and I realized with more viewings, I think the smile feels so unnatural, because there is such a sadness and desperation in the eyes and voice accompanying the smile, it's one of my favorite scenes of the show. Glad you guys are still enjoying the show :)
The jumpscare was HILARIOUS!! "F*** ME RUNNING!!" LOL too good!! Again loved the reactions guys, I've seen this show many times and every time I'm finding more layers that give the show a whole new perspective!!
I love Theo's monologue and how well it describes depression, which I've had since I was a kid. The darkness and loneliness that overwhelm everything else. A lot of people go around feeling like they're dead and have to fight to feel and live .
I watched this series the moment it came out. I just saw horror and I was on board. First episode I loved and then watched the rest straight after. That 8th episode scare, holy shit! I've never jumped out of my chair in a scare before. Best scare I've ever had! Loved it!
They did the family so well that pretty much everyone can see themself in at least one of them. Or parts of themselves in a couple of them. Which REALLY draws you in as a viewer. The psychology of this show is so good.
I believe there was an early plot point (later scratched to streamline the story) about Mr. Dudley's mom having an affair with Mr Hill, and that he was Mr Dudeey's father. Hence why she was out in the woods "giggling as if talking to a suitor" (probably Mr. Hill's ghost or a vision of him induced by the house, much like Nellie seeing her late husband). Maybe Mr. Dudley kind of suspects there was an actual love story in there somewhere in his mother's bizarre behaviour; hence the smile.
Mkay now imagine me watching this season in one sitting overnight starting from like 8 PM to 5 AM. It's 3 AM, I'm on episode 8 and relatively familiar with the jump scare pattern (mostly scary in the past, not really scary in present) and then that scene comes up. I nearly fainted. Also that scene in episode 7 when Mr. Dudley was talking about why they don't stay in the house at night was so compelling. I still can't believe this show didn't win any awards.
I’ve been looking forward to this particular jump scare 😂 I always have to rewatch them a few times to really get everyone’s reaction, but this one? This one has me DYING
Best jump scare since Ben Gardner's boat! (I mean there are compilation videos on YT of reactors reacting to that scene) And the reason it was so awesome... the two actresses in the front seat, didn't know the actress in the back seat was gonna do that. That reaction was real. Everyone who has seen this show has been WAITING for you guys to react to that moment. LOL!
Something that is so amazing about the jump scare in ep 8 is that you are so into the argument between Sherl and Theo, being so invested in the argument. You don’t expect Nell to be like “STOP ARGUING”. She doesn’t want them to argue she wants them to talk things out because in the end they’re family. You truly don’t expect it partly because there was no warning. No music. No nothing. And also because you’re so caught up in the argument you aren’t thinking of a jump scare.
Absolutely the best jump scare of all time. When I tell you I screamed louder than I have ever screamed sitting in my living room by myself watching that episode for the first time hahaha
love these reactions! you should react to a reveal of all the hidden ghosts in the background after you finish watching- it will blow your mind how many you’ve missed, they were everywhere..really keeps this underlying subtle terror flowing in the less explicitly scary scenes
Omg that epic jumpscare! Can't wait for the next two (last two?) episodes! You guys are gonna enjoy the next 2, the pacing is gonna ramp up big time. Can't wait!😁🤗
I went to a funeral of a good friend back in the 1990s where we threw dirt on the grave. It was the only time I experienced that. In fact, it was also my first Jewish funeral and one other friend recited the Kaddish. Though I grew up going to Pentecostal and Catholic private schools I found the Jewish funeral to be beautiful, fascinating and deeply meaningful.
Firstly, love your reactions and the way you analyse everything. I came just for Hill house, the best series I’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying, but I’ll definitely stick around for your other content. Secondly, the custom of throwing a handful of dirt into the grave…it’s common practice in my culture. Once the coffin has been lowered and the ropes removed, family members and close friends will slowly file past for one last goodbye, and toss a handful of dirt in as a ceremonial representation of putting the loved one to rest.
Been waiting for that jump scare sooooo long. The greatest, most legit jump scare ever. Period. Followed by one of the best monologues I’ve ever watched. I read somewhere that Kate Siegal (Theo) did that monologue in one take. True or not, it’s a masterclass. Like Mr. Dudley’s monologue. Buckle up, the finale is one of the best conclusions to any story I’ve ever experienced. Cheers!
I don't think it was depression, mainly because of Theo's speech after the scare. I think the reason why she didn't feel anything was because Nell was not there anymore. It was just an empty, soulless body. And that is the reason why Theo wonder's if that's all that's left ince we die. But of course we know that Nell is not there, sadly, she became the bent-neck lady.
In my head-cannon, what Theo felt when she touched Nell's body was Nell's depression. She was "contaminated" by it and spent a few days feeling what Nell felt: just nothingness and dread.
For me it is the fact that Nell was not there anymore. Like they said, her soul was not in that body at all. That's why Theo wonders if death is just an empty space without feeling or sense of self, not because it really is, but because there was nothing left to feel there. We left pur bodies and our souls are now free of them, in a sense.
Yeah I picture it like Nell hasn't been there for a long time. Almost like she was an empty shell just going through life which is probably what happened once her husband died.
Modern horror often relies far too much on random loud jump scars every turn. This director is awesome at utilizing those more uncanny creepy slow ominous scars instead of pop outs the whole time…but when he does a jump scare he DOES a jump scare lol
The Oak here is literally me in a theatre whenever I see a jump scare for the first time...pretty sure I've entertained a great many souls doing that. WTF!!! lmao. I think everyone that watched this show did that!
Not only the actress shot early but it was right in the middle of a big argument with tension between two characters, rather than a jump scare that came out of nowhere!
I am a total baby with horror and don't usually watch scary stuff and i definitely dont watch horror without someone to watch with, but the story this show tells is so compelling I binged the entire thing in one night totally by myself.
In one of the early episodes I remember you guys pondering if there would be jump scares in the show and I was DYING to type a comment! I watched this with friends who enjoy my easily startled nature. They kind of sit and watch me covertly when they know something is coming. When I saw this one I actually jumped up standing on the couch and my body flung itself back against the wall. I screamed louder than I ever have in my life watching something and my body tried to throw itself backwards through the wall. 😂 Best part is my reaction was so extreme it scared my friends who had seen it and were waiting. So then they both screamed and we had to pause the show and laugh for twenty minutes.
i was so happy seeing everyone keep quiet about this jumpscare in the comments of the last episodes, can’t wait to see you get the devil scared out of you
51:34 it’s not that it wasn’t working anymore, she touched her and it’s like all her emotions were replaced by this dark void and she just felt nothing, not happiness or sadness just nothing
Episode 7: When Steve got home to his apartment and ran into Luke he says "Futhermucker" - the different floorplans reflect that the house changes itself, controls space/time - Luke with his monolog/line "bring my brother back" and Mr. Dudley's monolog are amazing - it is implied that Mr. Hill is Mr. Dudley's father. Episode 8: The banging on the walls is reflecting their childhood experience back at the house - Theo's monolog is another great example of the caliber of this show - Hue said that the house will protect itself, which it did. The ultimate jump scare - the show gets you so focused on the story/characters that it hits so hard.
@@JennyAnn In Episode 5 he is seen standing in front of Mr. Hill when Nell and Arthur dance by. There is still no other reason for him to be there (that I can figure out) other than being part of the family.
Man I don't usually startle bad at jump scares, like, maybe a slight flinch, but the first time I watched this show I about came out of my chair at the car scene.
In the first episode of this series, I brought up, that this series really had one really good jump scare. And you would know it when it happens. That car scene is the only time I jumped and cursed out loud. That is what I think a true jump scare is. I haven't seen one better then that scare.
My favorite hidden ghost is in episode 7 and no one EVER sees it on the first go. You can actually see her twice in episode 7 -- when Hugh is in the basement discovering the body of Mr. Hill. She's pale with long, white hair and long nails, and you can see her at 49:50 in the actual episode, where she's leaning around the wall and watching Hugh. Then, you see her again standing behind all the police officers just a minute or so later. In Badd Medicine's video, you can see her at 21:30 standing behind the cop in the white mask, with her fingers curled around the wall! Also, when you all finish the series, DEFINITELY check out IMDb's video on the background/hidden ghosts in the series! And, for the first time (even though I've seen the show a good 10 times), I JUST realized that when Shirley and Theo hear the banging on the door to the funeral home, it's a callback to when they heard it as children in the second episode! As for THE jumpscare... that scene was originally two pages longer and Mike Flanagan told Victoria Pedretti (Nell) to jump forward whenever she wanted to, so Theo and Shirley's reactions were real and genuine because they weren't expecting it!
It gets me every time I watch Theo give her speech about what happened when she touched Nell. Tears instantly spring into my eyes, my throat closes up and I have a full on cry. That actress is amazing!
