I’m a 66 year old retired nurse who knows pretty much nothing about the world of fashion but somehow I stumbled upon your channel and I have to tell you it’s now one of my favorites. I have learned so much from you, your knowledge of the industry and the history of each designer’s work always impresses me. Thank you so much for a window into another world for me.
Yay! Glad to have you a part of the family! I stumbled onto him too after years of looking for someone like him cause I simply love fashion!...although only know very little. U are so right, he is such a breath of fresh air! Able to speak so intelligently about fashion. Haven't seen that quite as much since maybe Joann River's Fashion Police
I would LOVE to hear your take on the fashions from The Glass Onion. the costume designers really outdid themselves this go around and there were some MOMENTS.
the fact that bretman's the only social media influencer here speaks how he's built different with other influencers and how he takes fashion seriously
Not taking fashion seriously is not the only reason a lot of people dress poorly, as a celeb you can’t just wear anything you want to a public event. Fashion houses pick who to lend their pieces to, and they rank people based on how famous they are, how influential they are, if their brand is compatible with the celeb’s image, whether if their stylist (let alone the fact that not everyone can afford a stylist) have connections with the houses. If a fashion house lend their piece to the wrong person, for example to an unknown influencer who has a bad reputation, the fashion house’s clients (the 1% of the world) will not want to buy that piece. It’s all very interesting and a very secluded world.
There’s even a ranking of different types of fashion pieces based on how hard they are to borrow from fashion houses, (most celebs borrow, rarely do they own every piece they wear to every event)if I remember correctly vintage coutures like what Bella hadid wore is the hardest to borrow, haute couture is slightly easier, and ready to wear is the easiest. The more rich and famous you are (plus other factors), the more chance you have.
@AURI DONE YET?? Reducing Bretman’s lived experience as a person of color and their use of a vernacular readily available on the internet and as part of internet personas beyond daily life to ‘cosplay’ seems to have its own racial stereotypes in play. Please be careful with how you word your accusations. You would damn him if you thought he got rid of it once fame hit him and you decry him for keeping it consistent with his worldview. Hm…
Appreciate you acknowledging that you'd done the Met Gala video so fast, so you didn't know about the Buffalo Soldier reference. It's okay for us to learn and acknowledge!
Jodie Turner-Smith and Taylor Russell hands down consistently looked fabulous on all of the carpets they did. So excited to see the fashion moments of this year.
Hi Luke! I know this isn’t the purpose of the channel but I want to thank you cause your videos really help me. I have ADHD and listening to you while I do my house work (which I hate) always helps. Also, your skin is looking amazing! Much love!
History of the Buffalo soldiers, for anyone who is interested: The US Army began allowing African American men to serve their country in the midst of the Civil War, 1863. They called these regiments the United States Colored Troops, or USCT. Over 150,000 men enlisted. They suffered heavier causalities than their white counterparts, due to a number of factors. After the war, the USCT was disbanded. However, many black men re-enlisted in the Army and served in the West (west Texas, New Mexico, etc.) in newly formed segregated regiments (9th & 10th cavalry, 24th & 25th infantry, and Second 38th Infantry), building infrastructure and protecting settlers and mail from Native American interference, which had up til then prevented settlement in those areas. It was around this time that these new regiments got the nickname Buffalo Soldiers, but the way they got the name is highly disputed. These regiments earned great respect for their courage, ingenuity and honor. The buffalo soldiers regiments continued until 1948 when the military was integrated.
luke!! i work in politics and i think it would be such a fun idea if you did a fashion overview/critique of the professional wear of popular politicians over 2022, some turned looks! and other fumbled so horribly. content other than just celebrities could also open up such a cool discussion you haven't tapped into
Too sensitive to try and cover political fashion- it’d probably bring the wrong audience in the comments also… dependent on whomever‘s outfits’ feature.. Even if he tried to remain as neutral as possible. Plus there’s no emphasis on always being fashion forward in order to pushing the limits of fashion. Needing to dig thru tons of boring suits sounds less than fun for him and whoever else he works with when viewing red carpets which don’t even really have a place in politics.
TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU on AYO!!!! 🔥🔥🔥 She ATE all year -- but she really, really killed it @ CFDA in Thom Browne!! 🔟🔟🔟🔟🔟 Excited to see her continue to serve LEWKS!
I always love Luke's take on fashion moments and immensely respect when he revises his views based on additional details. That is the kind of criticism and commentary we want in all areas of media. My top fav was Michelle Yeoh in Bottega Veneta. The silhouette, material, color all mixed into the icon that is Michelle Yeoh won me over.
Yoooo I know! It's so strange how quiet they've been about her passing, and fashion RU-vid has been quiet as well, when she's an industry giant and changed the face of fashion. I hope we get more content explaining her legacy and influence.
If for no other reason that she designed the dress that Carrie Bradshaw wore to her non-wedding to Mr. Big. She was a giant of the industry and I can’t understand why the World of Fashion. WTF??
Levi Innes. Definitely not my favourite, plus the fact that JPS is a malignant narcissist and was behind the absolutely despicable behaviour of her husband, he turned the Oscars into a “ night at the ghetto”. Her affair with a drug addicted, young, friend of her son with mental health issues, was deviant & disgusting. I believe she’s so jealous of Wills success, she had to punish him for it. She should team up with Amber Turd, Memegain Markle, and Casey Anthony as 2022’s most narcissistic women on the planet.
gurl you can be humble all u want but i choose 2 believe the versace deities were DIRECTLY inspired by ur content 💅🏾💅🏾 (ps-- it's been SO crazy to witness ur channel grow and flourish in real time. it's only been a few days but 2023 is already giving big 1 MIL energy 😍 so effing proud of you luke!!!!!)
Nothing wrong with liking Harry and the way he dresses on the red carpets of this world (sadly rare appearances but always different and never boring, which…thank you Harry) and thank you for giving credit where credit is due by mentioning it :) dream team double Harry 🙌🏼
About the Miu-Miu scirt: I think, if people don't have really small backside, all kinds of bodyparts would hang out of the dress. I wouldn't dare to wear it as a size M.
@@abandonablesnowman i'm ok with bulge I just want to look at the photoshop edit file for that picture. Rare for skin to look that cohesive at that age. Looks very fake to me. I'm not all that into that style either. I'm sure she's that thin but the skin looks a bit too plastic.
Luke, have been watching your videos from India, and the best part is when you delve into the history/references/industry details of designers and fashionhouses. Would love a video about your education and what/ who influenced you. Appreciate your growth as a critic; accepting ignorance about Buffalo Boys and calling for inclusive sizing. You are gonna be the Roger Ebert of fashion reviews!
the reason the cjr polka dot look looks so good on Hathaway is not only because she's exudes confidence and vibrancy but her natural coloring is a dark winter which means she looks the best in saturated, bright colors so even though the clothes itself is very loud it compliments annes energy beautifully. if someone with more muted coloring like Gigi Hadid wore it it wouldn't have looked as good
Thank you Luke. Your choice was fabulous for the Best Dressed in 2023. For me, it was the understated simple yet flawless cut and beautifully fitted suit of Zendaya's where she's wearing Sportsmax.
Your Marvelous!! Your pics were great there were a few I didn't like but the majority were great. 2022 was a great year for fashion, at least we had that! Thanks
The thing that stands out about Jada P Smith’s look is it shouldn’t have worked. It’s a gigantic floof of a dress and she is a tiny woman. I would have thought she’d be swallowed up by it, but she wasn’t. She looked great.
I just realized from this video, how great it is to hear you talk about fashion you love. So much of the time you are talking about why red carpet fashion bad with a few diamonds in the ruff, and no shade meant by that! It more speaks to what is being worn than anything about you. But regardless, loved this video!
The Buffalo Soldiers were a big thing in the west-especially in the early national parks- during the Guilded Age as well, so he seriously nailed it. (Edited for punctuation)
Agreed. Brands should be making a range of sizes (though I think the Miu Miu skirt shouldn’t have made it off the runway since it’s only useful as coverage for one’s underwear, if that 😬).
As a plus size fashion girl, always a bit sad about this. I am a wannabe designer myself, and I just wonder why designers wouldn’t take on the task of making things for bigger bodies as a sort of personal challenge. I mean, I feel like it would hone their skills even more. It’s certainly been honing mine
Worth noting I think the Chloe sevigny look was supposed to evoke the shape of the Cala Lilly’s she carried. Such a fashion girl wedding dress for suuuure
Some of the outfits Luke likes I think are awful but I’m sure something I’d like he would think is awful! That’s one thing I love about fashion- beauty is in the eye of the beholder and subjective!
Totally. I mostly agree with him, but when I don’t it’s because of personal taste and perception. I like how polarizing fashion is. The whole point of it is to be out there meaning not everything will be for everyone. I always say it’s not fashion unless it’s a surprise! ^^
I believe she is still working with Law Roach. Luke may not have mentioned him in this vid because he has every time previously and their collaborative relationship’s so well known at this point, but that’s also just my speculation.
@@cinephile1712 oh yeah, valid point... and I think i may have stepped away when he mentioned him during Bella's portion... the vid may have been Law-heavy, when it's supposed to be about 'the Look' overall...
Maybe because this video is about the best dresses of the year, and not the best styling. Anything mentioned about styling is a bonus, not an obligation.
I was surprised when you said that gorgeous black dress was Versace.... until you said it was vintage Gianni. Then I was like, ohhhhh, that tracks. His genius was taken from us way too soon. And, sorry not-sorry, Donatella just ain't it.
Even after watching your channel for months, I still can’t predict whether you’re going to love or hate a lot of clothes. I thought Anne Hathaway looked terrible.
Kylie purchases! She also reserved this look completely so no other people could have it made! The look never seemed to appear on celebs or anyone else and then in october Kylie emerged in it - so mystery solved!
I liked Lil Nas X’s look. The detail was stunning, like a moulded fresco. The pants’ paneling was beautifully tailored. The quilting effect reminded me of motorcycle leathers, which also harkens to historic LGBTQ+ movements.
Awesome choices/selections! I love the diversity of looks and having to challenge myself to accept stunning looks from people I'd rather...not. I truly appreciate your references and ability to highlight nuances of the outfits I'd most certainly overlook and instead, I'm able to learn. I appreciate you, sir.
The smugness in the thumbnail! Luke said, come on in here honey, you know I'm about to come correct. Sit down, let's chat about who actually got the suit fit right.
Even the just jacket on the Johns Rogers outfit looks stunning. Take the jacket just as it is and pair it with a white top and trousers. Or just change out the corset top and make it white. It would set off all the other colors. Love the way the pleats on the pants cause the pants to drape. Jodie Turner Smith looked terrific. Denim certainly looked elegant. I agree that it was an interesting dress.
I love how Edibiri's (sp?) look incorporate a "hood" aesthetic with the saggy pants sorta look on the bottom. ETA: I thought Carrie Mulligan BEEN married!
Way to go with taking our comments seriously and calling out that you missed something. I most say your opinions in another video about who gets to decide what should be labeled cultural appropriation is the most well thought of opinion I’ve heard on the controversial subject. Please do a top15 favorite knee length dresses of spring/winter 2023. Would love to hear your favorite picks!
