Did you know the bright red berry's that grow in abundance all around us are edible & not just edible but but medicinal too!
These berry's are a powerhouse in polyphenols, these are powerful antioxidant compounds that are great for our health 🧡
Throughout history the hawthorn berry has been used as a heart healing & strengthening remedy going all the way back to ancient Greece but what's incredible about that is modern studies have shown that this is true today.💛
You can enjoy Hawthorn berry's as a simple tea or even a homemade ketchup we've just this year created our own Hawthorn honey recipe! 🍯
All these recipes taste great & preserve all the precious Hawthorn goodness so we can enjoy its heart boosting properties & autumnal flavours long after the berry's are gone ♥️

Hi. You mentioned that it is not good to cut down a Hawthorne Berrie tree, but is it okay to trim some of the branches off that are overgrown. Many thanks Donna

Just purchased a property that has a bunch of Hawthorne trees so I'm going to have to try this recipe. As a beekeeper though, it hurts to see the honey boiled like that. I may try a small batch like that, but by heating the honey up that much, you kill all the natural enzymes and nutrients in the honey. It might be better to simmer down the Hawthorne puree with the lemon juice until you have a nice think, almost dry paste and then once cooled, mix with good raw honey. If you get the moisture content way down on the puree, the honey shouldn't ferment and, if stored properly, it should last a long time.

I also thought the heated honey part could be adapted... Or recommend rapadura)coconut honey. Collected 6 c of haw berries at my cousin's farm in NE tassie and got to the puree stage before heading to shoot off and catch my flight! X

In Ireland, that superstition still lasts, a motorway down to Cork was moved a few meters to the left in order not to cut down an ancient Hawthorn about 10 years ago. Sceach Geall in Irish, means Bright Tree….

Will need to get your book. You can also make Hawthorn infused gin, a bit like sloe gin. In the past I have made it but much prefer sloe gin, the hawthorn gin is a nice talking point if you have people over for Christmas. You make it in a similar manner to sloe gin but with one major difference, with sloes they can infuse in the gin for a long period of time but with hawthorn don’t leave longer than 6 weeks as the berries start to disintegrate and you get a massive amount of sediment. You can also try a mixed sloe and hawthorn gin for something a bit unique.

I have a few questions about this plant. 1) There are lots of different types and some of them look very different from the one in the video. For example, larger leaves, yellow and green leaves, or leaves with black spots instead of green leaves. Or different sized or colored berries or different tree sizes or the tree thickness or different colored barks. Are all the types of hawthorn edible? 2)Are there any look alikes apart from rowan or yew? 3)Do the berries mix well with other plants like rosehip? 4)Do they go well in baking and both sweet and savoury recipes? 5) Can you eat the berries raw?
@homeiswhereourheartis
@homeiswhereourheartis Год назад
Hi there, thanks for getting in touch. Your curiosity is brilliant. In would say be 100 percent sure that you have the hawthorn tree before eating any of the berries. There are lots of plants some of which are poisonous that have red berries like lords and ladies or some types of nightshade. If your in any doubt then leave the berries for the wildlife. Hawthorn berries are great in savory or sweet dishes as they have a fairly neutral flavour and yes you can eat the berries raw just spit out the stones. Good luck in your foraging journey ✌❤
@penguinunicorn8180
@penguinunicorn8180 Год назад
@@homeiswhereourheartis Hi thanks for replying so quickly ☺️I have another quick question about another plant. Can sloe berries be used for anything apart from gin? Like to make powder or cakes? You can't eat the seeds so I think that's why gin is the most common recipe and after boiling them I think they get rid of the berry pulp, but if there was a way to easily separate the seeds and berries, that would be very good. Also I'm not sure if you have or not but have you done a video on wintercress/ yellow rocket or some of the plants that look like dandelion? Also are all plants with square stems and opposite leaves mint, since I see a lot of plants like that but they don't smell minty? Also I'm not sure if this is true but stinging nettles help with arthritis and one of the chemicals that are in its sting is serotonin. Have you heard of anything like that? I hope I'm not overloading you with questions, but this is the best foraging channel that I know so I don't really know where else to find this information. It's very hard to find stuff like this, I think because not many people know about it. Do you know any other good websites or things that also teach this stuff?Thanks

The flesh of a yew tree Berry is actually edible. I often eat them but I am careful not to eat the seed!
