I just wanted to let you know your videos were my guide to learning and better understanding what the best methods are to achieve sailing performance! The way you have presented the videos are easy to understand which a lot of instructional videos make it more complicated then need be! Anyway I just wanted to thank you for the videos! They had helped me get to where I am now! On a boat, on the ocean, sailing with a better understanding!

I LOVE your videos! After watching your videos, I can grasp what had previously confused me. The illustrations and video of the object(s) you are referring to, help so much! depends on the whether its a fractional sloop or masthead sloop. Fractional rigs rely more on their mainsail then foresail.

what happens is that as you release the halyard tension, draft moves aft and the sail will have a tendency to flog more. Thanks

Thanks again fine teacher. Where are you from. I live on my boat in the San Francisco bay area. I have never been sailing yet. I have a 1978 34 foot Islander, it needs a new mother and sails.

Very good video - thank you. one query please- At 7.30 you say that releasing halyard tension allows the boat to point better but it makes it harder to sail. Can you explain thatplease - what is harder?

Easing the halyard will bring the deepest part of the head sail aft. With that camber further aft, the sail points better but is a bit more difficult to steer. The "steering grove" is more narrow and less forgiving. Moving that camber forward, so that the sail has a "round entry" widens the steering grove, making the boat easier to steer but sacrificing some pointing ability. So in choppy waves people often bring the camber forward with a bit more halyard to make it easier to steer around the waves. In flat water, less halyard for better pointing where easier steering is not important.
