Never heard this song before in my life, the 70’s and 80’s was my era, it is brilliant, why did I not hear this song , I was living in Scotland aged 22 and listened to a lot of different bands, this is a great song, lyrically not to deep but what a sound.....
I was in Philly and was 17 in 79. I don't remember it either, but I also don't think it's that good. This is the same time Yes came out with Tormato, seems like a Yes/Genesis knock off. Genesis had amazing stuff, plenty of other amazing bands which made this forgetful.
They played this song back in Arizona in 79-80 at a small radio station that was listed in Rolling Stone as one of the top 10 radio stations in the US.
What an absolute pleasure to listen to this ...As fresh as when I was 17 listening for the very first time...Please bring rock n roll back and get rid of the bs music if you can call it that thsts out now...Cheers to Headboys Fans
I don't always listen to the Headboys...but when I do...the neighbors do too. Brilliant build from the opening riff to the anthem that it is. Just genius.
I live in Boston, it's 1979..I am 17 and blown away with song,so dam unique. Anyone remember the MOTORS " Airport" song,it came out around same time. 78,79. AWESOME years..VH day view album came out also..CARS" CANDY O....GREAT memories:)
I thank Video Concert Hall for bringing this song to me back in the day. My first break-up song for angsty HS. " Play with your own life, but don't play with mine."
@@robertgmay7661 And he was so much better than this crappy rock and roll garbage you people listen to. I don't understand how you can stand to listen to it.
Outstanding album. I first heard the Headboys whilst travelling in a Berlin taxi on my way from kladow camp to the city. The next day I was in the Europa centre buying the tape...
This is a classic by any standards, how could it not have been a springboard to far greater things??? Is that Phil Collins on backing vocals towards the end??? MARVELLOUS..
July 2020 and I'm in the mood for playing this LOUD LOUD LOUD having just seen my old church closed up and dead because of stinking COVID-19! Here's hoping and praying that the shape of things to come is much better!
What a great track...this band had the goods. I guess they just came at a time when the competition was so stiff they just glided in and out unnoticed for the most part. I played this when I was a disc jockey and the phones always lit up with listeners asking who they were. Very talented bunch. The entire album had many, many good songs.
Wow finally found this great song I still know most the lyrics from when I first heard on the radio in Miami WSHE in the 70's love this song brings me back..
Usually hear this on Evan "Funk" Davies annual "New Wave throwback show" on WFMU recreating his days at WNYU's New Afternoon Show about 40 years ago. Except this usually didn't get airplay there, it was mostly Import singles done top 40 style by the DJs.
I too was fortunate to grow up in a town with a great radio station. Played all kinds of music... king crimson, motors, yardbirds, cream, triumvirat, kayak, t-rex, motels, the who, UK, etc.
OMG!! I was manager of a Wherehouse records when this came out & have been singing it in my head for a week! Perfect song for these crazy times. Tkanks for taking me back to a simpler time. Stay Safe and Healthy!! ♡♡AB
This vinyl album is in my record collection. There was a controversy about the song schoolgirls, where you can hear a girl get whipped by her teacher shouting 'right, bend over' . So innocent these days now.
I saw these guys in Salt lake City. They played at an old venue called The Terrace Ballroom...it's torn down now. It was the kind of place that had big bands, etc... Groups who played there: Frank Zappa, Grateful Dead, Wishbone Ash, The Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, KISS, The Police, Alice Cooper, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane & The Doors. I saw The Headboys with The Fabulous Poodles and The Granati Brothers...ran right out and bought this album (and I still have it!).
Michel Rogerson WHAT!??? These guys are from Edinburgh. Only on minor hit in the UK. Have you listened to other Scottish bands like S.A.H.B, NAZERETH, Rezillos, or H2O? Even ac/dc?
I recall my first time at a disco I was 14 and sitting on a chair and it had just opened and there was a screen with videos playing and the DJ played this song with video and I got goosebumps and wondered who they were. The sound was memorable and better than most songs at that time.
In NY tri state circa 1980's -mid 1990's there was WFDU on weekends. This was DJ Jim Reikens sign on/sign off song. He had amazing taste. Sadly he passed too soon, too young around 2009? If you remember him, keep him in your heart
I remember hearing this song on the radio while working as a busboy in the kitchen of the resort I worked at when I was 15, ...it never really caught on here in the states, but it always stuck in head. I liked it.
Wow, memories and the parties we had as kids listening to all the songs on this album, they would and should have been bigger than what they were. I love there music and still do. A head of there time, one of my favorite bands, and Experiments song the best. They are awesome.
One of the singles from my teenage years, and one of a few of my singles that never made the top 40 so have always felt I have an eclectic (eccentric ?) taste in music, hence my love for club trance music later in life that I cant comprehend others not appreciating (some of the tracks are just incredibly nice but just never made mainstream) Anyway, always love this when I hear it
I lived in a small town and sold a range of home and car audio products in a catalog store. I heard this track on WFDD (Wake Forest college student radio in the late evening time) and was hooked. Found the album in Peaches record store 45 miles away mind you, and wanted to use the song for demos. My boss and I had the same taste in music so it was an easy sell to him. The way that the song builds layer by layer and eventually becomes this wall of sounds; it was perfect. Since it was a small town it was a sure bet that the customer hadn't heard it before and typically had a look on their face afterwards of "What the hell was that?" Good times. TLDR - Thanks for sharing the song. Great memories.
I think they get panned over cuz coming out in late '79 it doesn't make it onto early 80's song lists, but it has that punky futuristic New Wave sound that fits that genre perfectly.
i think i have a thing for 'shapes of things' -- love this one, love the yardbirds' shapes, and of course, max frost and the troopers. so good to hear this again...i only have it on a 45 rpm and it's sitting in storage. *sigh* thank you for posting...and hopefully others will get to appreciate it too. :)
I remember seeing Band on Top of the Pops in the UK late 1979. There was a Sci-fi movie out around the same time with the same name that had nothing to do with this great song.
Takes me back! My (younger) brother had the 45, and I used to borrow it when he was playing out on his Raleigh Grifter (that's a pushbike). Happy days!
Ceasar's praying for rain, lightning flashes around The prophet is screaming, his head hits the ground You should hear the warning if you read the signs Play with your own life but don't play with mine There was Moses and me, when the wind took the change He hands out the menu, he moves out of range If you knew the action, you'd see you're so blind Play with your own life but donґt play with mine Oh, oh, uh, oh, oh-oh, the shape of things to come ..... You're not invited to stay, you're not intended to go Can you tell the future? I donґt think so You should hear the warning if you read the signs Play with your own life, but don't play with mine Oh, oh, uh, oh, oh-oh, the shape of things to come ..... You live in your dream, I'll live in mine May be tomorrow we will collide Oh, oh, uh, oh, oh-oh, the shape of things to come .....
Heard this song on my local college radio station.[**just realized this...I made this comment about 3 years ago around 2018, but failed to properly place the verb in the time. I've been living here in Thailand since 2001, and this song was out YEARS before that. The station was WPTS, the Univ. of Pgh radio station, they played a lot of the newest stuff, especially late at night, so when I actually heard this song/album was around late 90's. This was one of those "flash-in-the-pan" songs for a band that shows what they CAN do, but then raises the bar for them at the same time...) Future songs are then too often dismissed unfairly... For some reason ("meaningful rather than 'catchy' songwriting?) this band never made it onto standard FM radio much. Found the LP in a bargain bin a week later, got it for less than a buck. Still have it, mint shape. Great stuff! ...['and kids today...' smh...]
