Playing an instrument can absolutely be meditative. Get yourself a keyboard or acoustic guitar and just doodle around with one idea like this for an hour, and it feels really good.

@@aleksik4028 i’m aware but if you actually read my comment it had more to do with the tone and the approach more than the actual chords themselves. nearly every popular song utilizes a i - iii - v pattern but if i were to play a list of 10 of them you could probably differentiate them from each other.

I only recently learned the term "plagal cadence", and now I know the word for harmony technique I've known and loved for a long time. My favorite is the major IV followed by the minor IV.

This concept works great on pedal steel guitar, particularly when backing up a vocalist during a spoken word recitation, and can be played seamlessly out of a single position just by going through the pedal/lever changes.

The minor iv chord is da bomb. The Beatles did it as did the Spice Girls in “Say You’ll Be There” during the chorus. Deviating from diatonic chords gives a harmonic nudge, as is the key with virtually all classical music, when the V of V or a non-diatonic V7 chord pulls you in to a different key.

Each one of these chords evoke a particular emotional feeling. The Bb/F is very solemn sounding. Very much a Gospel/Contemporary Christian vibe. The Bb min/F is more challenging. I bit mysterious. The C7/F has a JS Bach/Catholic Church kinda vibe. It is fun experimenting with slash chords like this!!

To piggyback on the C7, Cm7 also works really well as a moodier alternative (creates something like a F9sus4 sound), and even darker/hipper how about trying a C7b9, which could pair well with the Bbm/F in a cadence. Love your vibe Adam, makes me feel so calm!

This is actually how I taught myself to play piano originally before becoming a schooled percussionist. I had a basic knowledge of chords and how the circle of fourths and fifths interact, and kind of just went with it. I think this is a great tip for anyone trying to expand their playing vocabulary.
