From my research, I found that most slaves that came from Nigeria were Igbos mainly even though there were a few other tribes that were brought.. I was born and raised in Virginia but my father’s family and ancestors came from North Carolina. I heard most Igbos were transported to the Southern part of the United States where most of my family were. I also heard that the Yorubas were mostly transported to the Caribbean Islands and Central and South America. Only a few of them made it to the United States. You can tell that people from those areas still carry the tribal customs and Yoruba religion which is paganism . I asked my question mainly because as I started researching the Igbos I’m coming in contact with Igbos who have different views about who their people are. Most of them say that they are Hebrews while the others say they are not. I choose to believe they there are Hebrews because I do remember learning about Olaudah Equiano when I was in school as a child during our Black History month in the United States. We learned about his life as a slave who was awarded his freedom. However, our teachers in school and our American school system did not educate us about his Igbo heritage and the fact that he actually had stated that Igbos are Hebrews. That part in his autobiography was kept away from us. Black people in the diaspora from America and elsewhere were kept in the dark about most of our history. Black Americans are mixed with African, White European and a few of us have Native American blood in us due to what was going on in slavery and the years after that. Our slave ancestors had to endure much pain and suffering that still affecting us. During slavery, America had laws in which our ancestors were forbidden to read and write. Our history is basically whitewashed.They had to forget about our customs and language and names.. African Americans had a difficult time tracing our roots back to Africa to a specific tribe until recently mainly because in the old days, in the slave era in America slave masters did not keep any records of where our ancestors came from in Africa. They were listed as property instead of people. They had no rights as human beings They could not keep their tribal associations nor their customs or religion, and language. They were forced to adopt everything from White Europeans who colonized America. Just like how White people did Africans in Africa. That’s why Africans have a variety of faiths in their countries because they were introduced to different religions by foreigners. In America, some Black people often want to be Afrocentric and embrace pre-colonial African religions because they have this idea that most of the Africanized religions are not tainted by White colonialism.
