He did his genealogy while he was studying to convert anyway..not knowing his ancestry...and realized he was actually Sefardi Jewish. The Beit Din wanted him to convert anyway. At first he agreed, but after a few years he told them to go screw themselves. He's a Jew but some would say he still needs to convert.

Jews are every single "color" known. It has nothing to do with color or looks. It's unfortunate that the Jews that were scattered into the "dominant' western culture have used the dominant culture's definition of "proof"--eg science or documentation. Because relying on only a couple of forms of evidence, they miss the rest. "jews" are mostly from Judah (english word) or Yehudah (Hebrew word)--although in English, people don't really distinguish between all the different histories--they just say "Jews". The rest of Israel scattered everywhere including China, Africa, India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Russia, all over. Most of these "countries didn't even exist or have borders the same as today. Borders are man-made. But many, many cultures around the globe have little groups. like the Lemba, that have oral or written traditions that are similar to this tribe. The white western european CULTURE suppressed much of black and indigenous history. But that doesn't mean the Ashkenazi jews are any more "fake" than Ethiopian jews, chinese Jews, etc. The Ashkenazi and Sefardi and Mizrachi (which is all europe, middle eastern, and north african 'jews") just kept more written records than, for example, the Lemba, whose oral tradition says they "lost" their book. Rather than skin color or looks or possession of ancient torahs or dna, all the evidence has to be taken together--and oral traditon is just as important as all the rest. Skin color is really so arbitrary and means almost nothing, except as a symbol. If an african american family has an albino child, is that child any less African American? if one child is born light-skinned and less curly hair than a kid with dark skin and kinky hair--is the darker one more "Black"? of course not. History, tradition, common culture, ancestry--it's all important. Skin color is an identifier---and for people whose culture was wiped out by the dominant culture, I can TOTALLY see why someone would hang on to every tiny thing that connects them to their nearly-erased history and culture. It's a connection to what you (your ancestors) were forcibly cut off from. But actual melanin or hair texture is what the DOMINANT culture decided was important--if someone was a tiny bit Black or Native, or even Jewish or Italian, then they were a "minority". It's foolish. If someone looks at me they would say I was "white". But it's so insane, I have refused to mark any type of color identifier on things like government applications, etc--for over 40 years. That was before I found out that not only was I caucasian european, I was also indonesian, native american, and italian jew. My great-grandpa was an ethnicity called Indo--he was brown. But growing up i just thought it was because he was old so had many years in the sun haha--he also had blue eyes. Culture and ancestry is important. Physical attributes are almost irrelevant to that. Who knows what color the original Hebrews were? Probably not dark black--the Egyptians have paintings of Hebrews that had beards and kinky hair but brown skin. Over thousands of years, people's looks change. Not much change in hundreds of years--that's why African Americans don't typically look exactly like native West Africans, for example (and yes I know on reason is because of all the white rape in the past).But looks definitely change in 1000s of years That's why Asian Jews look no different than Asians, Caucasian Jews look caucasian, african jews look African (I am using the term "jew" loosely here.).
