On the weekend of the 24th of September 2022 - Heritage Day in South Africa - Rovos Rail ran a steam special to Heidelberg, the 'Heidelberg Great Train Race!'
On Friday the 23rd of September. the great adventure started behind a delightful double-header of steam, which included former South African Railway's class 6 (No.439) and class 19D (No.3360). The train would head North towards Pyramid, where it would then take the junction for Sentrarand and Heidelberg! Arrival that evening at Driemanskap - a few sidings before Heidelberg - where the train would be staged for the night.
Sadly, during the run on Friday, the newly restored class 6 would develop a fault and would not continue on the journey to Heidelberg, leaving No.3360 to haul the train for the remainder of the trip.
''In 1930, Bentley racing driver Woolf Barnato wagered a bet that he could easily beat the famous Le Train Bleu to Calais at the wheel of his own Speed Six Bentley.
At 5:45pm on 13 March 1930 as the train left Cannes, Barnato and his companion set off. The duo arrived in Calais so far ahead of the train that Barnato sought to put the challenge to bed by making it all the way to London before the express train pulled into Calais. They crossed the English Channel on a packet steamer, completed another 100km or so and, to loud applause, Barnato parked outside the Conservative Club in St James Street at exactly 3:20pm - four minutes before Le Train Bleu arrived at Calais Station.''
The Heidelberg Great Train Race commemorated this maverick event on Heritage Day with a convoy of vintage cars and motorbikes, Rovos Rail’s class 19D and daring enthusiasts in their flying machines...

Great to see 439 back alive, sad that she broke down. She's almost 130 years old now, which is a very respectable age for any locomotive, let alone one going out on the mainline. Sad also is the state where the railways are in especially in the Johannesburg-Pretoria area, almost refreshing to see a mainline in the video that actually has wires above it and electric loco's running on it! Can anyone tell me about the diesel in the consist, I didn't recognise it as a former SAR class or a Queensland loco either.

Very sad to see the state of our railways these days! The diesel you see is a former Narrow Gauge class 91 Diesel that was converted to 3ft6 and modified by Grinrod (I believe). Certainly looks very different now!

@@JamesAttwellPhotography They've got a fix for that. Run a strand of I think aluminium in with the copper so the scrap dealers won't take it.
