The North Hollywood shootout was a confrontation between two heavily armed and armored bank robbers, Larry Phillips Jr. and Emil Matasareanu, and members of the Los Angeles Police Department in the North Hollywood district of Los Angeles, California, United States on February 28, 1997.
The gun battle lasted 44 minutes. The robbers were armed with thousands of rounds of ammunition, custom fitted body armor and fully automatic weapons.
Until LAPD SWAT Officer Rick Massa arrived on scene…

Interesting Epilogue: According to several sources, LAPD eventually returned all the weapons to the gun store that were borrowed during the shootout. The weapons were obviously used and dirty. The store owner allegedly asked the LAPD to pay for the weapons, as they could no longer be sold as new. LAPD allegedly refused to buy them. Rather than pursuing legal action for compensation, the store owner advertised the weapons for sale as “actual North Hollywood shoot out” relics, quickly selling all of them for much more than their actual retail value.

I never get tired of reading or hearing about this. It’s just amazing to me how two guys were able to survive a 44 minute shootout with ANYBODY, but especially police. I know the police weren’t prepared for something like this to ever happen, but it’s still amazing that it took 44 minutes. It’s also AMAZING how nobody except for the bank robbers were killed.

@@thejay8963 To be honest I'd rather see a movie about the two bank robbers themselves, then end the movie with the 44 min shootout. The actual North Hollywood shootout in 1997 is the least interesting aspect of the two bank robbers. I was working as security at a mental health facility in Van Nuys when this happened. A lot of these officers had serious ptsd and became patients there from this single event. Literal warzone, constantly being suppressed with full auto machine gun fire while they had just 9mm pistols. I think a handful of them quit after this or were on considerable amounts of leave. One of them simply told us "The bullets just never stopped. Turned our cars into swiss cheese, went right through them." The shooters liked the movie 'heat'......a lot.

That was my B of A branch. I was late to work that morning and needed to pick up some cash at the ATM. I lived on Tiara St where the old police station was. Tons of black and white cars were bolting from there. As I got closer to the branch, on Victory Blvd, all the streets were blocked and choppers in the air. Later on, after a big detour to get to work, I found out about the heist. Days later, you could see all of the bullet holes in the apartments across the street and columns for the street lights missing chunks of concrete. Scary stuff. I'm glad I was late that day.

Ive seen this story a few times before and its a great story to listen too. If I'm not mistaken and correct me if I'm wrong, some things that are missing from the story are: They purchased Russian made armor piercing online and used it for their main rifle ammo during the the heist. The part about him not knowing how to clear his rifle is slightly wrong. A common problem with the rifle was it would stovepipe (casing gets stuck while ejecting). The reason he couldn't fix it was because he was actually shot in the right thumb. Instead of using a different finger to clear the casing he dropped it and than switched to the Beretta. Swat borrowed an armored money transport truck to rescue some of the downed officers. Mătăsăreanu's family tried suing the LAPD because they didn't allow the paramedics on scene until after he died, claimed they let him die on purpose. If any of that is wrong lmk, I've just heard it from different documentaries.

Not saying it’s not true since they had split up after they almost got busted in a real estate scam and were apart for about a year after… LPJ got busted and DF got away. When DF knew things were bad was when LPJ used a fake cali ID with DFs name on it and gave that to the cops when he got brought in- almost got him busted when he came to bail him out. DF didn’t have a cali drivers license so fortunately he was able to beat it. There’s a pretty amazing story there… but there are lots of interesting stories about those two and their antics. I can only imagine what it must've been like for the staff when a bunch of LAPD cops came running in there to acquire more firepower in addition to their Berettas and 12-gauge pumps. Now almost all patrollers on this force have either ARs or M4's as a standard carry -- even the motor squad has them mounted on their bikes.

There is a movie based on this incident, it's called "44 minutes". One of the best movies I've watched so far.

Anyone else remember the series "shootout" on the History Channel like 15 years ago, that was the first breakdown I ever saw of this shootout and was good but this one had way more pre robbery detail I've hadn't heard before.
