Tenchfishers member Pat Dower demonstrates a super safe "Hellermann" rig. A tench heli-rig that significantly reduces the risk of fish tethering in the unlikely event of a line breakage above the rig. This is based on the work originally started by Chris McKechnie and part of the ongoing work of the Tenchfishers "Rig Safety Group". Check out the other Hellermann rig variations outlined on this channel for more insight and information on fish-safe helicopter rigs.

The helermann stop has just enough grip to create the bolt effect but slides beautifully therefore in tge unfortunate event if main line breakage the rig will slide easily under the lightest of pressure ensuring the fish cannot become tethered. I came up with this idea in 2018 and have had hundreds of tench on this rig. It's a great alternative and safer than many commercially available.

I have found that there are many makes of float stop that slide very easily along the line therefore making a very safe top stop. This looks great and functional though I still think you can simplify the rig using rubber stops as long as you select them well ensuring you have easy slide stops. In fact I use the same rubber stops you have there, I get them from Ali express, on 8lb mainline they are perfect to get a hook up but also slide away safely if I get a break. I guess I'm asking .. are we over complicating this?

Where does the safety of the fish come in to play? I missed that part.

If the line breaks above the rig and then it gets caught in weed as the fish swims around with the line and rig dragging behind it the rig needs to be able to slide easily up the main line and drop off so the fish is not left tethered and is instead only carrying the short hooklink and not all of the rig bits and a long length of line. To make it easy for the rig to slide off, the top bead needs to be able to easily move up the line until it comes off the snapped main line. If the bead is too tight on the line the fish will no have the strength to pull the top bead up and off the snapped mainline to release itself and will become trapped or tethered and will eventually die.
